BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Select Brazilian Koa Prefinished Solid Hardwood Flooring

Finished to Last. We apply our durable, industry-leading finish to each board using a groundbreaking multi-layered, micro-particle process for superior wear and scratch resistance. So, go ahead—bring on life and everything that comes with it. Your Bellawood floor will stay beautiful year after year.

One look and it's easy to see why Brazilian Koa is often called Tigerwood. Its distinctive orange coloring and brown/black striping make it one of the most unique and exotic species available on the market today. And its durability is simply outstanding, resulting in a "not-so-everyday" floor that will stand up year after year to life's everyday demands.
This product is proudly finished in the USA.

We caught up with real Lumber Liquidators' customers who volunteered to discuss their floor shopping, buying and installation experiences. In no way did these customers receive compensation for their kind words. (They're speaking straight from the heart.)

About "Select Grade" Flooring
Select Grade has the most uniform color with no large knots and the longest average lenght of planks. Also referred to as First Grade.

It Taber Tested "the Best." When subjected to the industry sandpaper abrasion test, known as Taber Testing, Bellawood's durability results were more than double most comparably priced floors. There's good, there's better—and then there's Bellawood.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Koa Flooring:

Love this floor! The five inch wide boards just make the rooms look bigger and richer. I was going to install the floor myself, until I found out getting Bellawood to cover the 100 year warranty is almost impossible unless it is installed by a professional. Even then I was told, that they will fight you every step of the way. Over looking that, I plan to have more rooms done very soon. My biggest complaint is the 12 inch pieces that they fill the boxes out with. My installer told me that he really can't use them, 12 inches does not allow enough joint overlap to satisfy the manufactures specs for a good install. So you can just throw them away, of course you are paying about $3 per piece, for each one you throw away. You get about 10 of these pieces in each box, you also need to buy about 1 extra box (at about $150 per box) per 200 sq ft, to make up for the little pieces that you end up throwing away (that includes another 10 pieces of waste, in each box). If the company is just using these pieces as filler, they should use scrap pieces, and NOT CHARGE for them. If we didn't love the out come so much, I wouldn't be buying more, we are just wiser now.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Koa Flooring:

We installed this floor a year ago in our livingroom. This floor darkens with age and is very pretty. It was very easy to install. Do not purchase this floor for a room with heavy traffic it is very hard to keep clean. Water spots or damp foot prints will show on this floor. This floor scratches and dents very easy from dog toe nails or by dropping items on it. The color does go through the wood but scratches and dents still show. Using the Bellawood floor cleaner and mop heads clean's the floor easily but you must keep the mop head clean or your foot prints will show after the floor is dry and you walk across it.

As the color darkens it becomes richer and richer. Every time a neighbor comes over I get rave reviews about the color. I also like the length of some of the boards. Some other types come with all short boards. These are fantastic. I don't know how it holds up with dogs. I would probably go with laminate if I had pets. I highly recommend if you want some wow in your home.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Koa Flooring:

The floors looked great initially. However, since being installed, I have to doubt that the Koa is 67% harder than red oak. I have red oak upstairs and barely see any scratches or dents, and very little movement. But downstairs in the family room, kitchen dining area were I installed the Brazilian Koa, there are dents and scratches all over the place, and the floors are constantly popping with humidity changes. The rep thought is was becaused I used the 5" wide boards. Also, the wood looks great when first cleaned(we use the bellawood floor cleaner that we got from lumber liquidators), but after walking on it looks terrible in minutes. Not sure if it is the cleaner or the wood, but there always appears to be a visable film on the floors and where we walk you can see feet and shoe prints. Used Hickory in the rest of downstairs and looks great. Kinda wishing I did the family room, kitchen and dining in Hickory as well. The WOW! factor that the rep at lumber liquidators sold me on to go with the Koa just not there with all the dents, scratches and the constant film look. Red oak (finished later) looks like red oak, common, nothing eye popping and appears solid and seems to hold up well, The Hickory (prefinished) was used in areas such as my office, hall and living room which are more utilized than the family room looks cleaner, and does not appear as scratched and dented. The Koa just a bit disappointed. Was looking for high variation of wood color for the dramatic look for the first floor. That is why I started with the Hickory, went to Koa later based on rep. indicating it was stronger and has a more dramatic impact than the Hickory. I had the floors professionally installed.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Koa Flooring:

We are very pleased with our new floor. Bellawod calls the wood Brazilian Koa, I'm used to it being called Tigerwood. We were going to install Cumaru but our front porch and back deck are already Cumaru and we wanted something different inside the house. I was worried that the grain patterns of the Brazilian Koa would be too busy. Instead it provided a very dramatic look and completely changed the feel of the entire house. I'm glad we chose the Brazilian Koa.

We put down the floor in the living room and hallways. The finish quality is excellent, and the milling of the wood was very precise. There were only 2 or 3 pieces that were about 1/16" narrower than the rest. The random lengths (12" to 7') made for very little waste. In fact I had two boxes left over so we decided to remove the oak floor in the dining room and put the Brazilian Koa there too (after buying 2 more boxes). Make sure to make note of the mill code on your boxes in case you need to get more.

The total area was 475 square feet and took 2 full days to put down. Take your time in selecting your boards and try to mix up the grain patterns, colors and lengths so that you do not get a drastic change from board to board and row to row. I tried to gradually change the colors over several rows.

The finish is very hard but it will scratch. It is very hard to sand. I made my own transition pieces and the hardest part of doing that was sanding the existing finish so that I could blend in the finish that I applied to the pieces I milled.

This is the first hardwood floor that I have installed. I have built Cumaru and Ipe decks and I have to say that this floor was a piece of cake compared the decks! We just need to change out all the doors and It will look like a completely different house.

Beautiful floor, but if you have a decent size dog they will scratch it right away. Durability is a huge negative!!! Also our installer had many issues with different size boards, gaps, etc. Many boards were different widths, lengths and height. We were told that was normal, but our installer disagreed. We love the look and finish, but not a good floor if you have pets or kids.

Inconsistent sizing on tongue and groove. Project took longer than expected due to the necessity of making the edges 'fit' properly. We have installed other floors, not pre-finished. Glad we hired a professional to help with this. What you see is what you get with the pre-finished so take care to get every single board exactly right! We ended up taking up several rows to correct a bad fit a ways back. Love the wood's character!

Is it recomended to glue and nail instead of just nailing?

                    A:

I recommend nailing only, the important thing to consider whith wide plank flooring is the moisture coming from below that causes cupping. When glued and fastened you have no moisture barrier to prevent cupping.

how resistant is Koa to cupping like compared to maple or hickery?
                  Asked on 12/31/2013 by dave

                  1 answer

                  • Staff Reviewer

                    A:

According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) technical publication C200, "Problems, Causes, and Cures of Hardwood Floors", page 7 (available at www.NWFA.org) cupping occurs across the width of individual pieces of flooring. The edges are high and the center is lowered. This happens when there is either an excess of moisture on the underside of the flooring or when the surface of the wood experiences rapid drying. More subtle cupping can occur when the flooring is not acclimated properly. Excessive moisture can come from a variety of sources including but not limited to concrete subfloor that has not been properly cured, leaking pipes, wet or damp basements, HVAC system not operating, improperly controlled temperature or humidity, etc. Cupping can also occur when conditions result in the surface of the wood dries quickly. In this situation, gaps and/or cracks may result.

Because cupping is a localized site issue, Lumber Liquidators does not order inspections. Customers may order an inspection at their own expense. If this option is taken, the inspection must be done by a certified NWFA inspection company to insure that the information is complete, accurate, and in line with industry accepted standards.

If an inspection is completed and the results show that there is a manufacturing-related issue; please forward the report to Lumber Liquidators for review and consideration based on the warranty guidelines. Product warranties are located on www.lumberliquidators.com in "Flooring 101." Also located in "Flooring 101" is a moisture reduction strategy that can assist you in correcting the problem. Thank you for your inquiry

Is it really best NOT to put Bellawood in bathrooms or kitchens, which are typically damp places and dirtier than most other rooms in the house and can often get inadvertently wet with water or spills of various kinds?

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.

Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability. All wood species can change color over time due to oxidation or when exposed to light. In some species, the change can be more dramatic and may darken in color over time, while others tend to lighten. Currently there is no known value set for Patina or color change of a species so contractors and or customers should be aware of this normal condition. The patina process is unrelated to the urethane finishes. If the moisture levels in the home are not contrlled it could warp.

It’s very unfortunate, but scratches can happen with all flooring. Even the hardest species of hardwood flooring can get scratched. In many cases it is just the surface or finish on the flooring that gets scratched which can be repaired with many different scratch repair products. These products can be found at Major Hardware stores and Wood flooring supply companies. If most of the flooring has scratches, a screen and re-coat can be done to restore the finish. If a single board is badly damaged a board replacement can also be done to fix the problem. When you notice a scratch on the floor, find out what caused the scratch and prevent it from happening again before the scratches become a big problem. If sliding furniture is causing scratches, place felt protection under the legs. If your plastic trash can or laundry basket is creating scratches place a cloth rug under them. If your pet is scratching the flooring, use vinyl claw covers over their nails. If your shoes or high heels are the culprit, have a no shoe policy in the home. The best way to stop scratches is to prevent them from happening in the first place.

Yes once the obstacle is removed the flooring will catch up in-time.
