R.L. Colston- 3/4" x 3-1/4 Hickory Unfinished Square Edge Solid Hardwood Flooring

R.L. Colston & Sons offers traditional 3/4" unfinished solid hardwood floors in a variety of species in 2-1/4" to 5" widths.

Hickory greatly separates itself from other wood species by its great color variation which begins from light tan to reddish/ dark brown tones with dramatic grain patterns.
Its unique rustic appearance, the combination of its hard density and moderate coarse open grain, make it just as appropriate in a contemporary high rise loft as it is in a log cabin.
It is also ideal for high traffic areas and kid's rooms.

Please note unfinished flooring is sold in open, strapped bundles and not sold in boxes.  This product  must be purchased in bundles.  Bundle size may vary.

We were very impressed with the quality of wood! There were hardly any throw-away pieces. Easy to install with the right tools. It did take a long time for them to process the order but it did come in eventually. I would definitely purchase from Lumbar Liquidators again!

      Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" Hickory:

I installed 1,100 sq ft of the Hickory this past week. Quality of the wood itself exceeded my expections. Quality of the milling exceeded my expectations. I had also purchased a Norge 15 gauge nailer....which I was concerned about as it was so cheap. Not a single misfire... it too exceeded my expectations. All and all was a great experience and would do again in a heartbeat.

        Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" Hickory:

I bought this for my cousin, a professional installer to put down. I was looking for something different than the usual oak floor. Something with knots and color variations. This stuff is great. Harder than oak and beautiful light and dark grains, very different and pleasing to the eye. The knots also add character making my brand new floor look rustic. This is exactly the look I wanted, love it after 3 coats of moisture cure finish.

This was a great product. it is a little hard to get used to but once you do it goes quickly. the wife and i did the whole house in about a month working on it on the weekends 3500 sq ft. hickory is a bit hard to accept stain would reccomend a good gel stain but i used minwax stain and finished it with verathane semi gloss. i love it and by the way hickory is HARD.

              Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" Hickory:

              Hi all

I ordered 5000 square feet of this, and finished just over 4000 - the rest is for the barbecue smoker and the log fire. The floor is beautiful. If you want a unique character floor then unfinished utility or ranch grade hickory is the way to go. Please note you will have a lot of firewood for the winter. A high percentage is mismilled and there are lots of splits in the utility grade.

I finished the floor with a colonial american half strength stain. Given the amount of labour - you will NOT save money on this product. If you want a unique and beautiful utility floor full of character, and you are prepared to remill several pieces with the table saw - this is a beautiful product.

                  Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" Hickory:

I installed quite a bit of the natural Hickory through-out my bedroom, closets, living-room and stairs. I am happy with the choice. There are a lot of nice character marks in the wood. I didn't want a perfectly clear floor (I think those floors start to look like Pergo when they have no imperfections). In fact, I would have been ok with even more character marks. I prefer the sand/finish flooring for the smooth finished product. Pre-finished flooring tends to have "micro-edges" between boards which make it harder to clean. Also, pre-finished boards sometimes aren't perfectly milled to meet the next butt-end, causing small "butt-end" lips.

                  Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" Hickory:

I could not use 25% of the pieces that I purchased. They are in too poor condition to be sanded or planed down to use. That said the pieces that I did use look good and I am happy with them.

Yes it can be oiled, we unfortunately do not sell finishes for flooring.
I would recommend visiting an actual "paint" store or seek a professional Sand Stain & Finish expert for recommendations.

                      A:

This is a solid 3/4" product designed to be nailed to a wood substrate.
But can be installed over concrete using our Elastilon underlayment.
What you should know about Elastilon Strong
An Elastilon-backed wood floor is much faster to install than traditional nail or glue-down methods.
Elastilon Strong can be installed on new concrete floors, handling up to 3.9% moisture content. A vapour barrier of at least 6 mil PE should be used below grade and on newly poured concrete above grade where the moisture content is above 3.9%.
Laid down with a 5/8” (15 mm) expansion gap, Elastilon Strong creates a dynamic, floating floor that expands or contracts naturally with the hardwood.
Elastilon Strong has no odor and is free of volatile materials.
                      Elastilon Strong gives cushioned comfort.
1/8” (3 mm) thick Elastilon Strong has ratings of IIC 62 and STC 54.
                      Thermal resistance: R _ 0,15 (m K) / W
Elastilon Strong carries a 70-year limited warranty. Thank you for your inquiry.

                  • Q:

How are the widths measured? On a board 3-1/4" like this, what is the face width? Is it 3" of flat surface width plus 1/4" to 3/8" of tongue? Can you measure a piece of 3/4 x 3-1/4" flooring? I want it for something other than flooring and need to rip/saw the tongue off and maybe the groove too, and need to know actual widths to determine what dimensions I will end up with. Thanks.

What subfloor is needed? Can this be placed over particle board or on a below-grade cement floor?

                      A:

Minimum 5/8" plywood. This solid 3/4" product is not recommended to be nailed over particle board (no holding power) and the only way to install this in a below grade application is to use our Elastilon underlayment.
