Norge 15G Nailer worked great. I recommend the Skill Saw flooring saw. Lightweight, easy to use and you can cut right in the room. I attached a shop vac to it to keep the room clean!

Put 1500 sq ft of this in an older home. The view is amazing now, just wish that there were less blimished pieces.
Oh well, the price was still right.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 4" Natural Ash:

Great wood the only reason not 5 star is that it isnt the select ash that is looked over and inspected better, I had some wood that were splintered not bad but a little, some of the tongue and grooves were chipped and broken, those pieces I was able to use as cut peices anyways, but doesnt really affect the installation, overall I would def. buy this wood again and not the select to save money and its just as good, it looks awsome is hard and durable, it really adds a great look especially if your house is dark and dull this wood has great resolution from dark walls.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 4" Natural Ash:

The flooring looks amazing. I wanted longer boards because of the floor size and long hallways, but if you match the darker grain pieces together it still looks great. We put permanent black marker on a scrap piece and after it dried it rubbed right off. Incredible. Seems pretty rugged too, but I'll know better after my 3yr old boy has at it for a year.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 4" Natural Ash:

We installed the flooring on the second floor of our home - all the bedrooms and the upstairs hall. The wood is exceptionally beautiful, we love the color variations because it gives the rooms a very warm feel. Although Ash is very hard wood and will be less likely to easily nick or scratch, the color variations will be very forgiving... We were also surprised at how little waste there was with this wood.

                            A:

This is a solid 3/4" product designed to be nailed to a wood substrate.
But can be installed over concrete using our Elastilon underlayment.
What you should know about Elastilon Strong
An Elastilon-backed wood floor is much faster to install than traditional nail or glue-down methods.
Elastilon Strong can be installed on new concrete floors, handling up to 3.9% moisture content. A vapour barrier of at least 6 mil PE should be used below grade and on newly poured concrete above grade where the moisture content is above 3.9%.
Laid down with a 5/8” (15 mm) expansion gap, Elastilon Strong creates a dynamic, floating floor that expands or contracts naturally with the hardwood.
Elastilon Strong has no odor and is free of volatile materials.
                            Elastilon Strong gives cushioned comfort.
1/8” (3 mm) thick Elastilon Strong has ratings of IIC 62 and STC 54.
                            Thermal resistance: R _ 0,15 (m K) / W
Elastilon Strong carries a 70-year limited warranty. Thank you for your inquiry.

                            A:

All wood species can change color over time due to oxidation or when exposed to light. In some species, the change can be more dramatic and may darken in color over time, while others tend to lighten. Currently there is no known value set for Patina or color change of a species so contractors and or customers should be aware of this normal condition. The patina process is unrelated to the urethane finishes. Thank you for your inquiry.

We have a concrete slab base, and we were told that we could install this flooring using a 6mil poly base with Elastion Strong overlay. Does the length, width and depth of the boards matter? What do you use to hold the boards in place before pulling back the strong adhesive? Is it still necessary to patch concrete flooring and do the moisture test? Thank you.

Working With Thinner Boards- Although these instructions are common to the installations of Elastilon with all hardwood floors, particular attention must be given to the following when installing thinner boards. (i.e., ½” / 12.5mm, 3/8”/10mm and 5/16”/8mm)

                            • All end joints must be glued throughout the installation.
                            • The floor must be flat to within .08 inch over 8ft (2mm over 2.5m)
                            • Expansion room must be maintained around all walls and obstacles.

You will need to use our 6mil poly moisture barrier along with this product.

We really want to use this product in the new multilevel, ICF home we are preparing to build. We are installing zoned radiant (electrical) heat throughout. We don't want engineered flooring (nothing as nice). Research indicates we can use this product safely in the following manner without problems: #1 have the conductors embedded in the concrete (grade level), add sleepers covered with 1/2" plywood w/felt paper then topped with the ASH and #2 have the radiant mats on plywood (elevated floor) with sleepers, imbedded in a leveler, covered with 1/2" plywood w/felt paper then topped with the ASH. One note that I need to make extrememly relevant to the amount of heat that the other floors previously mentioned will be subjected to is this; the lowest level (walk out/below grade) will have conductors embedded in the concrete (heat sink) which will generate the greater amount of heat providing convection heating of the other floors (open floor plan). This floor will only have tile.

                            A:

Ash is about 3% more stable than red oak, between it's stability and 4" width it may not be the best choice. In other words you may experience some shrinking especially in cold months.

Note: the 1/2" plywood isn't sufficient, a minimum 5/8" plywood subfloor is recommended for naildown installations.

As you may know, some wood species are better candidates for radiant heat (RH) installations that others, if you prefer solid wood floors, choose a #species known for its *stability. Here is the order for best floor type selections as recommended by the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA)

Floating wood floors and laminates - are highly recommended because they tend to move as a total unit better accommodating moisture and temperature changes.

Engineered flooring - works well with radiant heat because of its dimensionally stable plywood construction. This construction allows each wood layer to run perpendicular to the other thereby resisting movement and moisture fluctuations.

Quarter sawn or rift-sawn flooring – this cut or style of flooring is preferable to Plain sawn because it will expand upwards and downwards from elevated moisture- not side to side, producing less gapping and board edge cupping.

Strip flooring - is also a better choice than plank flooring, because narrow boards expand and contract less than wide boards do because there are more seams in a floor to take up or allow for any excessive board movement.

If you choose to use solid boards or planks wider than 3" make sure the board moisture content is dry to around 6-9% before and maintained well after installation. For any wood application over radiant heat, the newly installed system should be operating some two weeks prior to the floor installation, this helps to further dry out any unknown pockets of trapped moisture. Acclimation is critical with radiant installations to prevent board shock. In no case should radiant heat surface exceed 85 degrees. Maintain in-door 30%-50% humidity and temperatures of 60˚- 80˚

Common red and white oak have been used successfully over radiant heat. Ideally, species 15% to 20% higher in stability than red oak are considered best choices. See our Stability chart for boards listed on the higher stability spectrum. Brazilian Cherry is more stable than red oak, however we do not recommend this species for radiant heat applications. In some instances sustained high heat can have a negative impact on this species. The natural oils, calcification and other properties of this species can slowly migrate to the surface just under the clear top finishes manifested as small whitish oxidation spots. Calcification is a species characteristic, not a defect. Calcification cannot be sanded out. Therefore after installation, individual boards manifesting this condition can cut out and be replaced with new boards.

                            Good species for radiant applications are;
Australian Cypress, Bolivian Rosewood, Koa, Mesquite, Teaks, Blood wood, and Mahogany. Poor performers are Maple, Beech and Birch.

*Wood stability refers to a measured amount of movement that can be expected in some species after installation. Species stability is directly related to local humidity, temperature and surface moisture, therefore acclimation for radiant heat in very important for a successful installation.

#Note that even when using an ideal species for Radiant applications actual wood performance can still vary due to the Radiant system construction, installation Techniques, as well as your region of the country.

Most all pre-finished solid wood floors will have a bevel to prevent chipping of the edges and overwood issues. We have do have square edged laminates and vinyl planks that may be of interest to you.
