    Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" White Oak:

Boards nice and straight. Very smooth surface so sanding will be minimal. However, many boards suffered severe sniping / burning either from surface planer or roll sander requiring more culling, cutting and waste than would have liked.

    Too many holes and cracks

    Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" White Oak:

If you're buying from here, you will need to either get at least 100 Sq ft as waste or deal with a mixture of bad wood. There were so much holes and cracks in them. I had to get an extra 5p sq ft at another place. I do not recommend here. It was good years ago, but no longer on my list for my floor needs.

      Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" White Oak:

We are re-doing a 1960 rancher and this product was simply meant to be in it. Put it on a concrete slab with poly down first and then Elastilon. A great investment, should last 100 years! Great for kids and pets because it is so durable and cleanable. Worth the investment -- has added great value to the home. Looks old school but a lot of the time the old school stuff is still the best.

what grade is this flooring. Is it a number 1 oak? does it contain knots and if so what percentage / size allowable

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

This is natural grade. Natural Grade flooring contains distinct variations in coloration and varying wood characters. Natural grade flooring will have a slightly longer average plank length compared to Rustic grade products. Can be between 1-6 feet on average.

The only way to install this solid 3/4" flooring is to use our Elastilon underlayment product.
What you should know about Elastilon Strong
              • An Elastilon-backed wood floor is much faster to install than traditional nail or glue-down methods.
              • Elastilon Strong can be installed on new concrete floors, handling up to 3.9% moisture content. A vapour barrier of at least 6 mil PE should be used below grade and on newly poured concrete above grade where the moisture content is above 3.9%.
              • Laid down with a 5/8” (15 mm) expansion gap, Elastilon Strong creates a dynamic, floating floor that expands or contracts naturally with the hardwood.
              • Elastilon Strong has no odor and is free of volatile materials.
              • Elastilon Strong gives cushioned comfort.
              • 1/8” (3 mm) thick Elastilon Strong has ratings of IIC 62 and STC 54.
              • Thermal resistance: R _ 0,15 (m K) / W
              • Elastilon Strong carries a 70-year limited warranty.

I would not recommend this product over your radiant heat system. You would have better results if you use a quarter sawn solid wood flooring or an Engineered, or Laminate floor. For information about our quarter sawn wood floor options please contact our sales department at 1-800-HARDWOOD.

            • Staff Reviewer

              A:

Both have advantages; a pre-finished floor can be installed and then walked on as soon as it is layed, where as a sand & finished floor will take up a few days. The advantage of a sanded floor is that you have more stain color choices and different gloss levels to choose from.

Unfinished flooring is sanded and finished on site at the customers home. Prefinished flooring is sanded and finished in a factory.
