              Pros

              • Good construction

              Cons

              • Doesn't Match My Floor
              • Poor Stain Quality
              • Splotchy Finish

              Best Uses

The price was good for this piece, but the stain is horrific. Splotchy and sprayed on. Color was much oranger than the rest of my gunstock flooring. I almost want to refinish it. I bought it online because it was cheaper than [@] By the time I exchange it with return shipping, it will end up costing more that the other places. I'm sure they're not all like this, so you may have more luck picking a piece out of the store instead of hoping that they mail you a quality product.

It will work with any thickness riser. Understand that this is a Stair Nose and not a Stair Tread.

                • Q:

I see you have prefinished gunstock oak stair nose as well as unfinished treads. What is the difference between these two (other than one is finished and one is not. :) )

I am planning on ordering gunstock oak for my flooring, and I want to match the stairs, but I'm not sure which of these makes more sense to order.

                  • CUSTOMER CARE

                    A:

The main difference is the look you are looking for. Stair Nose can be used with your flooring on the stairs or you go with a solid tread.

For safety, stair parts should be both nailed and glued. Nails can be predrilled, countersunk and holes filled with matching filler. Working from the bottom step to the top step, apply about 1/2" thick bead of adhesive to the back of each board in an "S" type pattern then Nail the tongues.

Best adhesive to use is construction grade, 100% urethane from the LIQUID NAIL family of glues.

In addition, for strength stair nosing should also be back-glued and top-nailed. Joists or stringers support stair treads and risers. Pre-drill nail holes half way into the stair nosing over each stringer, nail through the board into the stringers using a 2"-2 1/2" 7d-8d finish nail, counter-sink and fill holes and fill with a matching filler.

                • Q:

I am replacing carpeted stairs with 3/4" x 3-1/4" oak prefinished.
The underlayment on the stairs has a bullnose (on the overhang). Do I need to replace the underlayment board or, are there stairnoses manufactured to go over the bullnose?
Asked on 10/4/2011 by kurt from meridian, ID

                  • Staff Reviewer

                    A:

The existing bullnose should be cut off flush with the stair riser and then this stair nose will be fitted over existing tread.
                    Thanks for writing in.
