        Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak:

We had this unfinished wood installed throughout most of our house. We had to buy unfinished oak because it had to be custom-cut to match the width of some pre-existing oak floor that were in the place. At first I was miffed that I had to go to the extra trouble to install and then sand/stain the floors. However, I've come to the realization that perhaps this is the better way of doing things. The finish on pre-finished hardwood looks a bit too slick to me. It is hard to tell the pre-finished hardwood from the pre-finished laminate. This similarity takes away from the hardwood. When you install unfinished wood, and then have it sanded and finished after the installation, the floors look more authentic.

          Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak:

A few years ago, I bought this same sized red oak select to replace carpet in a few rooms. I had 25% waste then, so planned for that now. Glad that I did because I have wasted at least 25%. I ordered 1100sf. I've opened about 20 bundles and have about 5 bundles of waste. Many warped boards, many boards missing tongues. It seems like this wood is worse than what I had purchased a few years ago. I cannot recall what the name brand was, but it was from LL. Once I get past the waste, the product is beautiful when installed. I will use a clear shellac and a Glitsa Max Ultra Matte finish. These products bring out the reds in a way that make the floor look like cherry - beyond beautiful.

The random lengths included a nice variety. There were more surface knots in the bundle than I expected for 'Select' red oak. Only a few pieces were slightly warped.

              Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak:

We installed the product in three bedrooms. It was easy enough to install for wood floors. We don't know about the durability because it's just been installed. However, we were really disappointed that about 25% of the boards were not good (either damaged, split or discolored). We didn't feel that Select quality should have had such a high amount of bad boards.

The bundles had a good assortment of reasonably long lengths. Not a lot of shorts. Many of the boards were quarter sawn. (better appearance and more stable) I had only a couple bad boards (used those around the edges)

                        A:

R.L. Colston is an unfinished flooring that requires site sanding and finishing. Today's hardwood finishes are most durable and are applied in a quality controlled environment. We offer several pre-finish coatings, whereas most site-finished floors -sanded and finished at the job site- would only have two or three coats applied, then these must be air dried.

There are more advantages than disadvantages of pre-finished materials. Nearly all pre-finished hardwood floors will have beveled edges to some extent. On the other hand, site finished flooring will have a flawless uniform appearance when sanded. Many people with health concerns or respiratory issues choose pre-finished floors because these are installed without the usual sanding dust and fumes commonly associated with site finished floors. Another benefit is that these can be installed and walked on the same day!

Our Bellawood floors are factory pre-finished with an aluminum oxide water-base urethane using a multi-step application process. (8) coats are applied to most domestic and exotic wood species and each coat is hard-cured using Ultraviolet (UV) light. Bellawood pre-finished flooring offers superior wear resistance and is backed by a limited 100-year warranty! Maintaining the appearance of any wood floor requires close attention to in-door climate controls during seasonal changes.

Therefore, whether you choose one of our many “pre-finished” or “un-finished styles, we will have a floor for you. Let us know how we can help with your selection.

This is a solid 3/4" product designed to be nailed to a wood substrate.
But can be installed over concrete using our Elastilon underlayment.
What you should know about Elastilon Strong
An Elastilon-backed wood floor is much faster to install than traditional nail or glue-down methods.
Elastilon Strong can be installed on new concrete floors, handling up to 3.9% moisture content. A vapour barrier of at least 6 mil PE should be used below grade and on newly poured concrete above grade where the moisture content is above 3.9%.
Laid down with a 5/8” (15 mm) expansion gap, Elastilon Strong creates a dynamic, floating floor that expands or contracts naturally with the hardwood.
Elastilon Strong has no odor and is free of volatile materials.
                        Elastilon Strong gives cushioned comfort.

                        A:

                        ACCLIMATION/CONDITIONING THE FLOORING -SEE MOISTURE
All wood products are affected by environmental conditions especially prefinished materials. Acclimate the new flooring in the areas to be installed to normal lived-in conditions while in the boxes. Length of time is not the determining factor. The goal is to reach a moisture equilibrium or balance between the new flooring with its surroundings before installation. This balance could be achieved in as little as 1 to 5 days, or longer for some exotic species. For best performance, condition the flooring to consistent indoor temperatures of 60°-80° F and indoor humidity levels of 30% - 50%. Very dry or humid regions usually require extended conditioning. Recommended acclimation levels maintained even after the installation will minimize board movement, excessive squeaks and gaps.
Proper acclimation, moisture testing of the product and subfloor, even jobsite conditions all work together for the continued success of the installation and is the responsibility of those overseeing the project -the installer or wood floor owner.
You can find complete installation instructions on the product page by clicking on the specs tab and then clicking on - Installation Guide.pdf
                        Thank you for writing in.
