Comments about 3/4" x 3 1/4" Rift/Quartersawn Red Oak Flooring:

Bought the 3 1/4" quarter and rift sawn red oak for a radiant heat application. Would not recommend it for the following reasons:
Issues:
Non consistent board widths. From 3.125 to 3.25. Approximately 5% are less than 3.25. Have to measure each board and match boards or unsuitable gaps occur.
Badly warped boards. It's nice to have long boards, but they do no good when they are too bowed to use.
End cuts are out of square in about 25% of the. Boards and need to be squared.
I noticed it wasn't covering as much as I thought so I took random samples of bundles and find they are all short of the 19 sq ft stamped on the tags. Average is about 18.72 sq ft. Wouldn't complain if some were over 19, but all are short.
As a result of the poor quality control I have to measure each board before placing on the floor and have to square them. It is taking a ridiculous amount of time to lay the floor.
Because of the above defects I would never use this product on a customers floor. Also, had 2 bundles left over which I tried to return but was told of the 30 day policy. Having to acclimate the product for 2 weeks and spend extra time putting product in due to poor quality makes it difficult to recommend this.

Comments about 3/4" x 3 1/4" Rift/Quartersawn Red Oak Flooring:

Installed by professional. No waste, went in easily. We thought that the dark ends would sand out; they did not. The extra ordered was not needed and will be installed in a bedroom.

We ordered in CA and picked up in another store
in Nevada. no problems.

What is the grade per NOFMA rating, and what percent is quartersawn? Do you have only quartersawn?
      Thank you
      Asked on 6/12/2012 by Anonymous

      1 answer

      • Staff Reviewer

        A:

This is a select grade product.
Our Rift/Quartersawn will be about 50/50 on ¼ sawn and rift sawn (no flat sawn) It can be higher but will not go lower than 50%. There is really no way to judge exactly how much of each and all vendors will typically use this percentage unless they want all ¼ sawn which gets into a much higher price line.
        The quartersawn ? will need to be answered by our sales team;
Please call our Sales Dept. @ (800) 476-0007 for pricing and availability of all quartwersawn material. Thank you for your inquiry.

    • Q:

Is it possible to pay more but specify loonger lengths? I understand your wood is sold packaged in random lenghts from 12" - 96" with an average lenght of 36", but I'd be willing to pay more if there was an option to request more long boards and fewer short boards. fwiw, I'm looking for approx 300-330 ft for a kitchen/hallway floor to be installed over plywood. Thank You.

    • Q:

      What is "rift"?
Asked on 9/23/2011 by Anonymous from Annapolis, MD

      1 answer

      • CUSTOMER CARE

        A:

Quartersawn and rift-sawn wood flooring is more dimensionally stable in width than plain sawn wood flooring. Quarter sawn flooring is a method of milling or cutting lumber in quarters then sawing perpendicular to the growth rings. This cut produces a floor with a tight vertical grain which looks good and is very stable. When quarter sawn flooring is introduced to changing humidity, wood expands and contracts vertically instead of horizontally. This characteristic makes quarter sawn wood flooring an ideal choice for applications over radiant heat and gluedowns.

The annual growth rings of wood form an angle of 45° to 90° with the surface of the
piece. In quartersawn strips, the medullary rays or pith rays in ring-porous woods are exposed as flecks that are reflective and produce a distinctive grain pattern.

    • Q:

I do not want a beveled edge. Does this product have a beveled edge? Also does it have tongue and grove ends?
Asked on 8/28/2011 by Anonymous from Placerville, CA

      1 answer

      • Staff Reviewer

        A:

Yes, all of our unfinished products are square edged and will require sanding and finishing after installation. This has tongue and groove (end mathed ) ends.
