          Service and delivery comments:

The wood came in damaged from fed-ex. The driver said that is how he received it. It has been my experience that fed-ex is the roughest delivery available for flooring.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 5" Select Red Oak:

The product was generally good. However, some boards were not as wide as others creating gaps or had to be removed. Also, bundle straps left difficult to remove marks on wood making them mostly unusable.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 5" Select Red Oak:

This wood has a beautiful grain and color. I had it installed by a professional altough not from lumber liquidators. We used a medium stain and it looks great. A huge disappointment was the quality of the manufacturing of the flooring. Over half the butt ends are not square. They are tongue and grove so it was either square off the end and go without the advantage of a tongue and grove or live with a small crack. Our flooring was 5" wide so we opted to live with a crack. We filled the cracks prior to finishing and with the stain they are not that noticable, but it still bugs me. I know its not right even if others don't notice. The same is true with the board width. A small number of boards were very slightly narrower. It really seems quite surprising to me that the quality control on the flooring manufacturing process was not be more precise. I'm on the fence as whether to recommend this flooring or not. The wood is beautiful, the price was good. If you are staining it probably will work fine. If you are not staining the cracks will be much more noticable and you'd probably be better off with another product.

There was planner chatter on every board and I had to replane every board myself but looks great now. Numerous ends of boards were not square, some boards varied in width, and it made installation hard.

The price on this flooring is the best I have seen after shopping around. If I purchase this product now can I store the product and install it in the fall when my build in complete? If so where would the best place be to store the product. unheated/unconditioned garage, unheated unconditioned sun porch?
              Asked on 4/1/2013 by LC

              • CUSTOMER CARE

                A:

Yes it may be stored, however it should be installed in a climate controlled room and off of concrete.

From instructions, "Once you pick up your new flooring store it inside your home. It is important to keep wood flooring dry, protect the flooring from rain or snow during transportation. Lay the flooring flat in a dry level place. Provide air flow under and around cartons. Remove any plastic or cellophane that may be in or around the boxes. Open up the ends of the boxes, to help prepare the flooring for acclimation. Do not store in unclimatized buildings, garages, sheds, directly on bare concrete or next to outside walls. Cartons should be placed close to the center of the installation area as possible. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from heat/air vents. To prevent board warping, twisting or bowing do not cut the plastic support packaged bindings or remove product from the packaging until ready to install."

I am confused by the description. Is this product ALL 5" wide planks or are there random widths from 2 1/4" up to 5"? This is pretty important in my decision as to whether to order this or not. Also, I would like to achieve an "American Cherry" color/look with my choice of stain. Can I achieve this effect with this red oak?

I'm remodeling a house and want to put this in the hallway that is 50" wide, diagonally. The other wood flooring is 2 1/4' wide. It would only contrast in the doorways. What is your opinion on this. I love things to be different. Still have to check to see if I have red or white oak presently. How do you tell the difference since once I have the other floors refinished will not be staining them, just polyurethane.
