Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 9" Southern Yellow Pine:

Bought this flooring to use in a cabin/shed in my back yard (200 sq ft). Hired a pro floor installer with myself as his helper. Thought we could install quickly in a few hours but instead it took almost 6 hours (!!). Part of the problem was (as mentioned in other reviews I read) the many warped, cupped and split pieces. Also, we were surprised to discover (mid job) that some of the boards were actually different widths! This made achieving a tight fit with several boards impossible. Additionally, there were lots of boards with day-glow orange markings all over them that had to be vigorously sanded before install and boards that were carelessly cut from behind so that many ends were frayed and were not square so had to be recut to make usable.
I bought this flooring not only because it was beautiful and fit the look of the project but also because of the cheaper price. However, after all the time necessitated to install, which I had to pay the professional for, I ended up spending as much or more than if I had gone with a much more pricey product.

            We'd do it again

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 9" Southern Yellow Pine:

We've had this floor for over a year now. Because we were concerned about the board width and the fact that pine is soft, we wanted to wait to write a review to offer an appraisal based on the floor's performance. We used a professional installer because we put it in our breakfast room, great room, three bedrooms and several closets. The pine was installed over 3/4-inch plywood with builders felt as the underlayment. Because the boards are so wide, they were able to install it all in a day. The sanding/filling required 3 days followed by a couple more days to apply 3 coats of oil-based polyurethane. There was virtually no waste. We've noticed only a couple of minor issues, one being a very small gap that has opened up between two boards at the entrance to the kitchen and the other is a crack in a board in the great room. The wood is soft but the normal wear and tear of two adults in the house has created only a few charming indentations. However, one weekend keeping my son's 70-pound dog resulted in some very unattractive toenail tracks. Now we keep the dog downstairs where we have porcelain tile. Consider heart pine if you have pets or very active children (or don't mind the scratches). The stair treads in our 36-year-old house are made of heart pine, and they appear impervious to pet scratches. The installers were topnotch (not LL contractors but one approved by LL). We would recommend this product to anyone who loves the look of wide pine floors.

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 9" Southern Yellow Pine:

Picked up our order and while the planks generally look great, the ends definitely need to be cut/squared (noted by other reviewers here), there is a fair amount of cupping, and there are far too many short pieces in our order. Over 40% of my sq ft is under 3 feet in length - I was expecting more like 10-20%. Note that I tried to call and verify plank length before I ordered and was simply told that "it varies". Apparently it's a bit of a gamble with each order. If I had been told that 40% of my order would be short planks, I wouldn't have ordered it. I would have returned it but we are on a deadline and I think I can get creative with the pattern so that it will still look good.

I put the flooring in my entire house! We got very good quality, very little waste. I had lots left over. One thing I would suggest: takes a little more time, but cut EVERY end and make them square, we found that this helped alot! Very easy to install. We were beginners and installed over 2000 sq feet.

What do I do about shrinkage of the pine weeks or months after I lay it.
                      Asked on 8/21/2013 by Andy

                      1 answer

                      • Staff Reviewer

                        A:

Acclimation of the flooring: Unlike ceramic tiles, stone, or plastic products, wood flooring is a dynamic, hygroscopic material. Like a sponge, its shape can be adversely affected as a result of environmental, temperature and humidity changes. Because of this, it is in your best interest to ensure that the flooring be climate controlled with temperatures of 60° to 80° F, preferably 70° F, and humidity of 30% to 50%, preferably maintained at 45%. When wood is correctly acclimated to these target values it becomes relatively dormant, neither expanding nor shrinking.
The HVAC ventilation system must be fully operational providing normal air flow in all rooms. Also if the flooring was shipped with protective plastic wrap, open the ends of the container exposing it to air flow. Wood, laminate, and cork flooring should NEVER be stored directly on bare concrete substrates or stored in garages or out-buildings without climate control. Boards stored in this fashion can absorb moisture and be edge-cupped right in the box. The point of acclimating is to condition wood products to "normal living conditions" the floor will experience once the structure is occupied, before fastening.
Moisture testing and acclimation go hand-in-hand: Next, only after the new flooring has been properly acclimated and the true moisture values of the flooring have been verified through testing, is the flooring ready for installation. With these values in mind the installation could actually take place the day of delivery or several days later, depending on the species. It is not unusual for oily or denser species to take one to two weeks of in-home monitored acclimation before installation.
Pre-finished flooring is shipped having 6-9% MC Moisture content. To start the installation, the goal is for the installer to establish a MC balance between the flooring and subflooring. The subfloor moisture content should not exceed 12%. With this in mind, the moisture content of a 2 1/4" wide board should be no greater than a 4% difference or a balance of the wood subfloor. For boards 3" or wider, the moisture content must be within a 2% balance of the subfloor. When the moisture balance is achieved then the installation can begin. If the balance varies more than the measurements outlined, the installer should hold off the installation until the wood flooring and subfloor has achieved an MC equilibrium or balance.

                        A:

Shrinkage/expansion/cupping in wide plank flooring 5” or wider may be reduced by using approved fasteners, and gluing the flooring to the subfloor. This will require a direct bond to a dry, flat, and clean plywood subfloor. The adhesive should be a premium urethane construction adhesive. Apply the adhesive in a snake like pattern to the back of the planks, then nail the plank to the subfloor. See - http://www.lumberliquidators.com/assets/images/installation/clover_lea.pdf

                      • CUSTOMER CARE

                        A:

                        Pine comes in 3/4" only.

While we do not have any manufacturer's specifications on how to do ceiling or wall installations, we have had customers install on ceilings using Tongue and Groove flooring. One method used is to ring shank or screw plywood first on the rafters and then fasten flooring to plywood. Softer woods, lower profile (thinner), and engineered flooring would be easier to nail over your head.  Fastening can be done with finish nailers or hand nailing. Ring shank nails can hold better than standard finish nails.

Longer average lengths like you get with our pine flooring or v-groove pine can be locally sourced at a local mill or lumber yard can be nailed to rafters on 16" centers. 24" centers could require 1x3 strapping or plywood.

I like to use penetrating oils for the softer pine products.
Depending on the finish manufacturer instructions.
