Though here in California a vapor barrier is not really necessary, we installed this in case at a later time our insurance company rules it to be necessary. Better to be forward thinking than regretting not installing a vapor barrier.

Comments about Dream Home 6mil Poly Sheeting:

I have never done a laminate floor before, or any home repairs, as this is my first home, and its only 2 years old. I am a master mechanic so I am fairly competent with tools and understanding how things work.

This was pretty straight forward, Roll it out the length of the floor, un-fold it, and just cut at the baseboard with a razor blade, and thats it.

I had to overlap two parts just slightly, a few small pieces of thin clear tape, and it worked like a champ.

6 mil poly would not be recommended over particle board.
The only way to completly get rid of the smell would be to replace the subfloor.

                    • Q:

I have a large room that will require several pieces of underlayment to cover. The 6 mil Poly sheeting does not have adhesive on the product. Are there any recommendations as to how I can adhere one sheet of underlayment to another? I saw one reviewer state that they had used a few pieces of tape to accomplish this, but I fear that this would not be enough to provide an adequate moisture barrier.

During rainy days water is coming out of our floor. Our contractor advised that we wrap it with some sort of plastic then elevate our flooring by adding gravel then cementing the flooring before adding tiles. I would like to ask would you know what type of plastic wrapping would that be?

                        A:

Poly Sheeting should never be used over wood sub flooring as it can trap moisture and promote mold and rot. The only case where this would be used under solid hardwood flooring is over a concrete subfloor using Elastilon as your installation system.
