Excellent counters

By Mandysue51

from Michigan

Pros

  • Easy Install

Cons

    Best Uses

    • Countertop

We recently used these countertops in our kitchen. It is a little scary when you first get them out of the box because the color is much lighter. There is clearly a good side and a bad side. The bottom side of the counters is full of glue and fillers and other marks, but the good side was beautiful. Fine sanding and some mineral oil and they are gorgeous! LOVE

Lot of gaps, some filled, a lot not.

    • Anything But A Countertop

The tops have a LOT of filler and the quality is pretty bad. Tons of large, unfilled gaps that you will have to fill. On a wood species that you are staining, these deficiencies can be masked, but not on something like walnut where you are just going to clear coat.

    Great walnut island

    Pros

    • Beautiful when finished

    Cons

    • Scary Out Of The Box

    Best Uses

I used this for my kitchen island to break up the use of granite on the counters. It was a little scary looking out of the box, but finished well after using a wood filler, a LOT of fine sanding and tung oil. I finished it with a tung oil/citrus solvent finish (8 coats)for a matte water resistant finish. I love the warm velvety feel of the finished wood. It's easy to maintain and looks like a piece of furniture.

          Good product - needs work

          Pros

          • Good Price On The Lumber

          Cons

          • Poor machining

          Best Uses

          • Countertops

I purchased the Walnut Butcherblock for an office countertop. We're in the carpentry and cabinet business and I loved the look and price. The countertop shipped quickly. However, the material was poorly machined and the sales literature failed to mention the poor quality of craftmanship. The pink putty that is used to fill the voids in the piece was really annoying (please use putty color matched to the species of wood it is used to fill). That being said, because we are a full service carpentry company, we worked our magic and made the piece shine. I could not be happier with the end result. Finally, I would recommend this product only to experienced woodworkers and finishers.

          Disappointed with quality

          • price

          Cons

          • Only One Side Is Useable
          • Poor quality
          • Too Much Putty

          Best Uses

We were told by the salesperson that both sides of this countertop were useable and this is simply not true. The backside has very large chips of wood missing and has large gaps between the wood. The front side (the good side) also has large gaps between the wood and chips in the wood which are filled in with a weird putty that stands out once oiled. The putty is very poorly done and unfortunately is very noticeable. Had I been told the truth that I could not use both sides of the counter I would have purchased another 8 foot length so that I could have a mitre joint in the corner. I guess I am lucky because that would have been a waste of another $400.

              • Q:

I would like to use a butcher lock countertop for a bathroom vanity. I know that it won't have the durability of stone, but will look great. It would be a 7' top with double sinks. Do you sell theses with the cutting done for the sinks if the dimensions are provided, or is that up to me?

                Thanks

We picked up our butcher block last night. It looked nothing like the pictures online(very grey), but the manager said it is unfinished. That we need to sand, stain/oil, etc. What do we need to do to finish it? Also, we are installing an undermount sink. Any extra protection from water?
