I installed this countertop in my kitchen 4 years ago. It's low maintenance and highly versatile. I prefer to chop on cutting boards simply so I don't mar-up the surface too much, but if someone DOES cut on the countertop it's perfectly safe and no harm done. I also set pans straight from stovetop or oven onto the butcher block. Treatment with mineral oil twice yearly protects the wood and gives it a lovely warm glow. Lots of compliments. I've recommended this countertop to friends and they love it also.

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x25" x 8 lft Maple Butcher Block Countertop:

I bought this for a wood shop bench I intend to beat up a lot. It's fine for these specific needs. But it is annoying that there are ~25 gaps from 1/64" to 1/8" between board ends that are irritating and have been filled with crumbly wood filler. I just wanted a bench top without any gaps it in, I'll have this forever. Finishing it with anything but a solid sealant in a kitchen would get food and liquid in the gaps that would be impossible to clean. If I was going to use this for a kitchen countertop I would be returning it.

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x25" x 8 lft Maple Butcher Block Countertop:

I needed a piece of butcher block for a stand alone kitchen cabinet that I built for my son. This served the purpose after I cut it down to size. There was enough left over to make several cutting boards. The butcher block requires some filling of small gaps between the ends of the laminated strips and it needs to be sanded to create a smooth finish. I would also recommend wetting it down before a final sanding to raise the grain. It will need to have a finnish applied such as food safe mineral oil, preferably several coats.

What type of wood filler is used by the manufacturer to fill the voids/seams in between the butcher block wood laminations? Also, is there an off-the-shelf FDA approved wood filler that you can recommend?

Unfortunately I do not have that information readily available.
To answer your second question I would recommend using Titebond II PVA food safe glue (available @ any home center) simply mix with the sawdust from your butcher block to a peanut butter consistency & you'll have a perfect match, let dry, sand & finish.
Titebond II is FDA Approved For Indirect Food Contact.
