Flooring 101The Floor Finder
Attached are photos taken of our Dining area and Great Room before and after the installation of Brazilian Koa (Tigerwood). We hard oak parquet and carpet in the areas before the hardwood installation and we are really proud of the new flooring (installation also arranged by Lumber Liquidators). Great product...great installation.

BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 2-1/4" Select Brazilian Koa Prefinished Solid Hardwood Flooring

Finished to Last. We apply our durable, industry-leading finish to each board using a groundbreaking multi-layered, micro-particle process for superior wear and scratch resistance. So, go ahead—bring on life and everything that comes with it. Your Bellawood floor will stay beautiful year after year.

One look and it's easy to see why Brazilian Koa is often called Tigerwood. Its distinctive orange coloring and brown/black striping make it one of the most unique and exotic species available on the market today. And its durability is simply outstanding, resulting in a "not-so-everyday" floor that will stand up year after year to life's everyday demands.
This product is proudly finished in the USA.

We caught up with real Lumber Liquidators' customers who volunteered to discuss their floor shopping, buying and installation experiences. In no way did these customers receive compensation for their kind words. (They're speaking straight from the heart.)

About "Select Grade" Flooring
Select Grade has the most uniform color with no large knots and the longest average lenght of planks. Also referred to as First Grade.

It Taber Tested "the Best." When subjected to the industry sandpaper abrasion test, known as Taber Testing, Bellawood's durability results were more than double most comparably priced floors. There's good, there's better—and then there's Bellawood.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 2-1/4" Brazilian Koa:

I fell in love with the attractivenss of this floor, but became easily disappointed shortly after installation. We have an open floor plan on the 1st floor and utilized this floor throughout the dining room, living room, and hallway. Within 2 months, there were scratches everywhere from our 2 medium sized dogs. We spent a lot of money for something to scratch so quickly! Rather disappointed!

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 2-1/4" Brazilian Koa:

We installed your Koa in our living room a couple of years ago, and I was very pleased with the look. Then we decided to add on to the existing house. We doubled the size of the living room, and this is our second order of Koa. The existing Koa has been tramped over by all the contractor's workers. We live in a sandy area, so you can imagine the beating it has taken.....drywallers, electricians, plumbers, HVACers, framers...plus some areas of the house were open and allowed dampness and humidity to enter. The Koa took all this and looks just as great as it did when it first made me smile! Amazing and very, very classy!

Have installed this wood in every room in the home except kitchen, bathrooms, and sunroom. It looks beautiful and easy to clean. Color darkens over time making it even more rich and warm. Just finished my final bedroom with this product. It took me 5yrs to complete by doing one room at a time as I could afford. It was worth every penny.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 2-1/4" Brazilian Koa:

During a kitchen remodel, we installed this flooring over our entire 1st floor, and it looked absolutely beautiful! As it ages, the color darkens and becomes richer. However, as soon as it was down, I noticed areas of the boards where the finish did not seem to make it to the edges. There were also boards with marks already in the finish. After only one year, the marks in it are incredible. It is advertised as being harder than oak, but my oak floors looked better after 15 years than this does after only one. There is already a hunk that popped off an edge of one of the floorboards, so now I have a missing piece to my wood. Even with felt protectors on the bottoms, there are "dig" marks from my kitchen stools. Anything and everything moved over this wood leaves a mark/scratch/dig into the wood. Beautiful, yes; durable, absolutely not. Thousands of dollars later, and I'm very disappointed.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 2-1/4" Brazilian Koa:

My brother, a construction professional, installed this floor for us. It took him a day and a half to do this small (11x11) room, but he also went slowly and artistically, pulled the most beautiful pieces from the boxes and planned how he wanted the floor to look. We had to go back and buy an extra box, because the store estimated we only needed 5% over the measurements rather than the standard, 20% more than measured area. We needed every bit of the extra, but it was worth it!
Also, installing the 2 1/4-inch planks takes much longer than installing a wider plank. The thinner planks, however, give the room a more formal feel.
This is a dining room, but right now it's still empty so that I can look at the beauty every day. :)
We also have dogs, and just to be safe and protect the floor, we restrict their access to this room. As the dogs get accustomed to the difference in the floor, we'll give them more privileges. So far there are no scratches or dings.
Hope to extend the Brazilian Koa into our large family room, but I would use the wider planks.

A very beautiful elegant looking floor, looks very high quality at the beginning. Only problem I have is after about a year mine seems to have developed a "film" over the finish that dulls the rich look. I use the bellawood cleaner and mop and tried others as well, but wind up with a smeary smudgy filmy look. Made mistake of putting in my huge den where everyone comes in. Try to keep the soft lights only on so that the smudgy look isn't so obvious.

I love this flooring as far as beauty. The installer actually said this was the most beautiful flooring he'd seen and ordered some for his own residence.
My issue is my flooring always looks dirty; it picks up footprints (oil off feet), etc... and shows everything. I have had oak hardwood before and never had this issue. I clean this floor weekly. I have wondered if anyone else has had this issue.

                    A:

Bellawood products will offer you the most durable and resistant finish on the market today. Sand abbrasion tests have shown it to be more than twice as hard as other floors, making an excellent choice for families with pets and in high traffic areas. Brazilian Koa has a 2160 rating on the janka scale, making it 67% harder than Oak. Other exotic species like Brazilian Cherry or Brazilian Redwood have a higher janka rating making them more difficult to dent. Please feel free to contact our product specialists at 1-800-476-0007 with any additional questions or to further discuss your project.

Our Bellawood floors are factory pre-finished with an aluminum oxide water-base urethane using a multi-step application process. (8) coats are applied to most domestic and exotic wood species and each coat is hard-cured using Ultraviolet (UV) light. Bellawood pre-finished flooring offers superior wear resistance and is backed by a limited 100-year warranty! Maintaining the appearance of any wood floor requires close attention to in-door climate controls during seasonal changes.

                    A:

We can only recommend our Bellawood Floor Cleaner, or cleaners that are safe for water based urethane finishes. Never use any polish, wax, oil soaps or cleaners that add shine to the floor. Thank you for your inquiry.
Our Bellawood floor cleaner does not contain any polishes ,wax or anything that will build on the surface and is recommended to be used on all our flooring products. I do hear of this scenario often enough and it always prooves out that there was another cleaning product used previously on the floor that is reacting to the Bellawood cleaner. Most likely once the residue is removed from the original factory finish the floor can be maintained easily. Thank you for your inquiry.
We do not recommend steam mops or Roomba Scooba robots on our laminates or on any of our wood floor products. Although appropriate for kitchen sheet vinyl or ceramic tiles, wood, laminate and cork floorings have raw seam edges that can swell or cup with use of these cleaning methods. We recommend our Bellawood Floor Cleaner, or cleaners that are safe for water based urethane finishes. Thank you for your inquiry.

                    A:

At this time, Lumber Liquidators does not recommend gluing down ¾”Solid wood directly to a concrete slab, typically this has been a nail down product or you can use Elastilon as your installation system.

In recent times, some of the big home center stores have been advocating this procedure. Adhesive manufacturers recommend precision milled boards and the use of shorts or board length sizes under 40”, such as our Virginia Millworks collection.

Experience with site related moisture, temperature and humidity fluctuations has shown the longer ¾” solids to be unstable when glued to cement, in fact, without raising subfloor base too high, engineered floors are actually the floor of choice for direct glue down on concrete slabs. These are constructed or engineered with a plywood core, designed to withstand temperature and moisture changes.

However, solid flooring sizes 5/16”, 3/8”, ½” and 5/8” can be glued to cement. Solid wood glue down installations can be more difficult when compared to engineered styles. The longer solid boards can be twisted or bowed right out of the box. While this is not an issue when nailing, these can present problems when gluing down. When working with solid wood it is advisable not to remove the plastic binding straps keeping the boards secure until ready to install, thus ensuring straighter boards. Do not lay out more boards that can be installed the day of installation. Culling or selecting out bowed or twisted boards can produce greater than normal waste and should be accounted for when ordering. Boards with slight bows can be cut in half then used. However, for these reasons we recommend the use of professional flooring installers for solid wood glue-down installations.

In addition, due to the rigidity of solid wood, a flat surface is required (deflection not to exceed 3/16” in 10’). Floor flatness issues can be corrected by filling low areas with cement patches or levelers and grinding down high spots. Blue painters tape (#2080) should be used to help keep surrounding boards grouped together while the adhesive cures. Some installers use straps in an effort to tighten up their glue-down installations. Caution is needed. Be aware that over-strapping can produce board lifting, peaking, board-edge crushing, or glue-bond failure. Many installers use a 75-100lb roller to ensure adhesive transfer and evenness of the board edges.

A successful ¾” solid installation on concrete can be accomplished using several methods as outlined below. First test for excess moisture and remedy.
