Flooring 101The Floor Finder
Here are the before and after photos of the new floor we incorporated into the complete reno that we accomplished on our kitchen. We selected handscraped Tobacco Road Teak by Virginia Mill Works. The associates at your Conyers, GA store were great to work with and had excellent advice to offer. In less than a day we and with a little elbow grease we now have a kitchen floor that we are absolutely proud of. Thank you Lumber Liquidators, it was a pleasure working with you.

Virginia Mill Works Co.- 3/4" x  4-3/4" Tobacco Road Acacia Prefinished Distressed Solid Flooring- 50 Year Warranty

Reminiscent of the charming, handcrafted floors found in Colonial American homes, Virginia Mill Works hardwood flooring uniquely combines the look of old-world craftsmanship with modern design and prefinishing. Each floor is a work of art, adding stylish character to any room in your home.

About Distressed Flooring:
Distressed hardwood floors have a natural worn appearance. They look like floors from the days when floors were finished by hand.
Please note this product is a nominal 3/4" thick, but due to its scraping process the thickness may be as thin as 5/8" in the scraped areas.

Comments about Virginia Mill Works 3/4" x 4-3/4" Tobacco Road Handscraped:

Installed this product in our vacation home, about 2100 sq ft including a loft and two bedrooms. It goes down easy but for large spaces, you need to watch board sizes. They can be up to 3/32" in difference. It's not a big deal in a bedroom or closet, but our great room is 28' across. A small gap at one end of the room, becomes a large one 10-12' later. In two spots I had to take a Dremel and flatten down a peak that had formed where two boards butted. There's only so much you can use the nailer to bend and shape the board.
Other than that, good looking floor. It does scratch easily, as in rolling a ShopVac where one wheel caught and dragged, or sometimes sliding the nailer. These scratches come out white and are noticeable. I thought Acacia was a harder wood than that.

We installed this flooring about 10 years ago. It is as beautiful today as the day we put it in. It with stands, big dogs, kids, dirt & heavy traffic. We have little to no scratches anyway. It is always the first comment we hear when we have company - everyone loves this floor. Absolutely worth the $$$$. I'm moving and will install this on the entire main floor of our new house.

              Service and delivery comments:

No problems - I picked up. They were quick to load me & very helpful on what I would need to install.

We had this flooring installed in our living room about 5 years ago and it was beautiful and still is beautiful. At that time I would have given it 5 stars. This past month we had it installed in the master bedroom and the quality difference was very apparent. It was harder for the installer to fit the pieces together. The pieces came in shorter lengths than 5 years ago. The "hand scrapping" now looks the same on all boards, no variation like the floor we installed 5 years ago. Looks like they went to different mill and possibly different wood source. A bit disappointed this time in Lumber Liquidators and Virginia Mills.

LL has delivered Bellawood Ash 5" and Virginia Mills Distressed Acacia 4 3/4", both solid hardwood 3/4" floors. The Bellawood Ash, made in the US, has no odor. The VM, made in China, has a stong odor. What is the difference here? Why are the VM fumes so strong, and what is it that I am smelling?

                          A:

Most likely you are smelling the finish used on the Va Mills product, this can happen when the carton is open if the flooring was packed before the UV coating had completely cooled down. If you add in the fact that it sits for quite some time in a ship hold, boxed and wrapped in plastic. So its only natural that it release an initial smell from the finish as does any product that has been pre-finished and boxed up in this manor for this length of time.
However the good news is it should quickly dissipate (air flow/fans & open window).

Thank you for your purchase & enjoy your new floor!

Hand scraped and distressed flooring can be resurfaced using the FA-8 abrader which is designed to abrade all types of factory-finished floors.
Its unique cylindrical-designed brushes allow you to abrade with or against the pattern grain of the floor, making it ideal for parquet, herring bone, distressed and hand-scraped flooring. The multiple brush grit offerings allow for various applications including abrading between coats during site finish applications.
We recommend that hardwood floor refinishing be done by a professional and if you are not sure if you can refinish your flooring have professional sand and finish expert come to your home and evaluate your flooring. Thank you for your inquiry.

Regarding TOBACCO ROAD ACACIA - HAND SCRAPED: I'm very interested in this product, but am finding reviews that board widths are not consistent and this makes installation more timely and more difficult because the installer has to ensure same-width boards are grouped to complete each width-sized row across the floor. And, if you don't have enough of the width size to complete rows, or your floor, in your order - you end up having to buy more of this product to fill in the row gaps, and have extra non-used/non-usable wood that doesn't match up when the project is completed. QUESTIONS: 1)Is there a quality control money-back guarantee if boards aren't the same width when delivered? 2) Can I get a guarantee that any boards of non-matching width can be exchanged (no charge) for correctly (and matching) width boards?

Wood by "NATURE" is not perfect.
You can find complete installation instructions on the product page by clicking on the installation tab and then clicking on - Installation Guide, you will find:
The customer/installer is responsible for final inspection of quality, and for moisture testing the subfloor and wood flooring. During installation, use reasonable board selectivity and good judgment. From a standing position any individual board deemed unacceptable in appearance should not be used. Defects should be cut off placing the remainder in closets or near walls. To minimize gapping, boards of similar widths should be placed together in the same row. If milling or quality is suspected stop the installation and call the manufacturer. Most manufacturers agree that a reasonable amount of installed flooring is enough to stop and determine acceptable product quality, as an example; up to 30% for projects less than 500 sq ft or up to five boxes of flooring for projects 1000 sq ft or more. Because use constitutes acceptance, once the flooring is completely installed it is deemed free of visual problems and appropriate for use by all parties concerned. The manufacturer shall not be responsible for costs associated with repairing or replacing flooring installed with visible defects. Our floors are manufactured in accordance with accepted industry standards that may allow possible defects caused by (manufacturing or nature) not to exceed 5%. Before installation, if more than 5% of the purchased material is unusable contact your local store or call CUSTOMER CARE immediately.

                          SUBFLOOR PREPARATION
                          Wood subfloors
Shorter floor boards also need to be properly fasten therefore do not install flooring directly over floor joist without proper subflooring.
                          • All structural subfloor panels must be installed sealed-side down, and provide minimum ¾” perimeter spacing. Square-edged or non tongue and grooved panels used as a subfloor will require a minimum 1/8˝ (3 mm) expansion space placed between all plywood seams. Panels must meet minimum CDX grade Exposure 1 and US Voluntary Product Standard PS1-95, PS2-04 or Canadian performance standard CAN/CSA 0325-0-92 for construction sheathing. Check panel for codes.
                          • Solid planks used for subflooring should be ¾” x 5 1/2” (1” x 6” nominal), Group 1 dense softwoods, No. 2 Common, kiln-dried to less than 12% percent moisture content.
                          • Particleboard, Luan or Masonite: is not recommended, remove or cover with 3/8” plywood.
                          • Minimum of 3/8˝CDX panel thickness is recommended when used as an underlayment over an existing subfloor.
                          • Avoid pressure treated plywood for interior use. These can have elevated moisture or latent with rot resistant chemicals.
Note that joist spacing determines minimum subfloor thickness.
                          • Joist spacing 16” on center (OC)
Plywood: Minimum of (5/8˝) Oriented Strand Board (OSB): Minimum (3/4˝, 23/32”) Advantech Minimum (3/4˝, 23/32”)
                          • Joist spacing 16” up to 19.2” (OC)
Plywood: Minimum of (3/4˝, 23/32”) Oriented Strand Board (OSB): Minimum of (3/4˝, 23/32”)
                          • Joist spacing over 19.2”up to maximum 24” (OC)
Plywood: Minimum of (7/8”) Oriented Strand Board (OSB): Minimum of (1”)

                          A:

The way a floor is treated or maintained can affect its longevity. In addition, there is no relationship between the hardness or denseness of exotic species and its resistance to surface scratches. Wood floor manufactures do not offer warranties of protection against denting or scratches, rather product warranties refer to milling defects and finish wear within specified periods of time.

While some finishes may claim to be harder, all top finishes whether Oil or Water based urethanes are generally listed as scratch resistant though not scratch proof. Actually, our pre-finished Bellawood and Dura-Wood is superior to any site applied finish. This is because site finished floors with only 2 or 3 coats require time to fully “air cure” which can be problematic on days with high humidity.

Our Bellawood floors are factory pre-finished with an UV cured urethane finish, which is scratch resistant and abrasion resistant. Using a multi-step application process many coats of finish are applied to domestic and exotic wood species and each coat is hard-cured using Ultraviolet (UV) light. Bellawood pre-finished flooring offers superior wear resistance and is backed by a limited 100-year Transferrable warranty! Maintaining the appearance of any wood floor requires close attention to in-door climate controls during seasonal changes.

Wood floors like furniture will scratch and dent if not properly protected. It is recommended to use furniture pads (included in our cleaning kit) under the furniture legs. Pet nails should be kept trimmed and sharp objects (including high heels) kept away from the floor. Often scratches can be adequately repaired using liquid scratch covers. Dents and nicks can be filled using wood floor repair kits available at your local home store. If your floor is severely damaged please consult a professional about refinishing, an individual board replacement may be all that’s needed.

                          A:

Our wood floors are manufactured for maximum durability, easy maintenance and finished with a high quality aluminum oxide water base urethane UV cured finish. This step protects the wood and helps keep the flooring looking beautiful longer. While highly durable, the finish is NOT considered indestructible. However, by observing a few precautions like setting up a regular cleaning routine and simple maintenance program to protect the finish, you can expect years of performance and beauty from your wood floor. All wood floors can show signs of wear over time. There are many factors that can affect the amount of wear. These include the size and lifestyle of your family and product location.
                          The following cleaning principles are recommended for all of our products -Hardwood, Laminates, Corks, Bamboo and other Exotics. Outlined are examples of the reasonable and necessary maintenance to be performed; this is only intended to be a basic list;
                          • Immediately after installation, be certain that the flooring is completely cleaned and dry as described below. If you must protect the flooring from traffic, use only “craft” paper, brown, red or white, this will allow the flooring to “breathe”. Do not fully cover the flooring. NEVER lay plastic of any kind or any other non-porous material over the flooring as this can trap moisture, harm the flooring or fade the finish.
                          • Sweep or vacuum regularly, since built-up dirt, grit and sand can damage the surface of the wood. If using a vacuum, use a soft brush attachment -NOT A BEATER BAR ATTACHMENT. Be certain the wheels of the vacuum are clean and do not damage the finish. When using a broom be certain that bristles are soft. You can also use a dry mop.
                          • Because of the myriad of cleaning products available and methods of each application, Lumber Liquidators cannot endorse or oversee the use of any Brand Name of floor cleaner. We do recommend cleaning products safe for urethane finishes such as our Bellawood floor cleaner and Dream Home Cleaner.
                          • The use of a changeable terry cloth type system to clean the floor is highly recommended; apply cleaning solution to the terry cloth.
                          • NEVER use oil soaps or paste wax products or other household cleaners that contain lemon oil, Tung oil, silicone, or ammonia on pre-finished flooring. The use of these products will harm the long-term performance and appearance of your floor and may affect future re-coating. (Damages caused by non-recommended cleaning products are not covered by warranties). NOTE: This also includes the use of vinegar. Vinegar is an acidic element that can have an oxidizing, caustic effect on the finish.
                          • In an effort to clean hardwood floors, many have experimented with a variety of cleaners on the market and end up with a new problem. “How to remove the build-up of cleaning products revealing the original surface"? If this is the case with you, we recommend consulting with a professional cleaner local to your area because they can best see the details involved and make the most accurate recommendations. If you choose to remove the layers of build-up yourself, use cotton rags instead of a mop to control the amount of liquid used.
                          • NEVER wet-mop or flood your floor with water or any other product. Moisture can seep into the seams causing edge-cupping damage. Urethane floors do not require wet mopping. Natural floors are water resistant, not water proof. Remove all spills promptly using a soft, slightly damp cloth
                          • STEAM CLEANERS ; Lumber Liquidators does not recommend Water brooms or steamer type cleaners on laminates, bamboo, engineered wood, corks or hardwood floors. Although steamers may work well cleaning OTHER types of hard surface flooring, the 130° to 240° heated steam vapor can ruin wood or urethane finish resulting in finish issues, warped, or cupped flooring. Water and wood do not mix well, especially steam. Use these products at your own risk.
                          • Do place protective mats at entry doors to keep dirt, grit, sand and moisture from being track in from the outside.
                          • Do use area rugs in heavily traveled areas and pivot points (e.g., stair landings, room entries, etc.), especially if you have a large family or indoor pets.
                          • When using area rugs, use a rug pad with a felt, plant or PVC based backing. DO NOT use area rugs with a petroleum based rubber backing (typically black) as this can cause permanent chemical staining/etching of the floor finish.
                          • Take reasonable precautions; use a dolly and protective sheets of plywood when moving heavy objects such as furniture and appliances.
                          • Place protective pads beneath furniture legs and feet to reduce scratches and dents. Check and replace wore pads regularly.
                          • Keep pet’s nails trimmed, and paws clean and free of dirt, gravel, grease, oil, and stains.
                          • Scratches, dents and cupping are site related, not considered a manufactured defect.
                          Thank you for your inquiry
