              Butcher Block Countertop Quality Control

I was excited that a Butcher Block countertop version was available on the market and n different species. I was dismayed to the amount of finish and touch-up was required. The joints on the finish side were not fully patch, or fell out, so I ended up purchase some walnut wood filler to match the species I purchased. Also, this item does not come from the manufacturer with square ends, so you need to set up your countertop piece by squaring it to the long edge and cutting an inch or so off to get started. I suggest planning to buy a12 foot long section if you need exactly an 8 foot piece, luckily this did not happen to me since I started with a 8 foot piece to cut two smaller sections of 3 foot adjacent to our stove. Also the joinery is poorly done with a jagged joint, it would be nice if the outer face which is exposed to the world would be done with using a straight butt joint on one or both sides so you have an option of which side faces out. I finished the edges off with my router which I would highly recommend doing so one does not get splinter later on.

Love this product. Using it as the countertop in our mud room. Can't speak to the ease of installation as the house is new construction and my builder installed it; however, I sanded and finished it myself with ease.

It looks really great. Finished it with mineral oil, which brought out the colors really well.

Obviously since it's in our mud room, this countertop is not used gently. All kinds of stuff gets piled on it and dragged across it. No dings or dents so far, but I love that if anything does happen to it, I can just sand it down and re-oil it, then it's just like new again!

I used this piece for a 42" x 54" island and was able to put two pieces together to get the width I needed. We glued them together and put a metal strap across the bottom to hold it together. A palm sander easily rounded the corners and edges and then I applied a butcher block conditioner. Looks great and you cant see the seam.

                    Great value

                    from Chicopee, MA

We were looking for a section of butcher block counter top to serve as an accent counter in our kitchen, and this product was perfect for this use.

Having a small kitchen, my wife wanted a counter top which folded out of the way when not in use, but could swing into place when our daughters wanted to help out in the kitchen. Granite, quartz, or the like would be too heavy and too difficult to work with, but wooden butcher block was just perfect.

With a few applications of mineral oil, the dark colors of the walnut really stand out and serve as the perfect accent.

No, however this can be achieved on site.

Two sections can be joined together.

                        1) For a good glue edge bond; using a straight edge guide and saw recut 1/2"or so off one side of each.

                        2) For center support and strength; Use a biscuit jointer or doweling jig, then wood glue the edges and bar-clamp until dry, re-sand. Add a beam to the counter to help support the seam joint.

I'm looking to enlarge a butcherblock island in my kitchen. Currently we cannot eat at the island as there is no overhang to allow us to sit comfortably. A slightly larger size would allow two people to sit on each of the longer sides. I wouldn't mind installing it directly on top of our current one to give us a couple extra inches in height. Would this work? How would we install?
