Pros

  • Beautiful Color
  • Practical

Cons

  • Frequent Oiling

The only negative is that you can see the glue in-between the wood slats - it could be a little "tighter."

    • The wood is beautiful

    • Not Perfectly Planed
    • Surface Had Slight Waves

    Best Uses

The wood was beautiful and took an oil finish really well. Some gaps in the wood were pre-puttied, but not all.
Found several interior voids at cut lines.
Surface had some small waves as if it had been spot sanded instead on planed as a whole.

You have to finish & cut the countertop yourself. The biggest selling point is the beauty, but the guys at Lumber Liq made it so easy!!

Is it possible to glue 2 25 inch wide pieces together to make a 50 inch wide island? 50 inch by 8 ft for example?

              • Staff Reviewer

                A:

Yes they can be joined together to achieve this. Two sections can be joined together: 1) For a good glue edge bond; using a straight edge guide and saw recut 1/2"or so off one side of each. 2) For center support and strength; Use a biscuit jointer or doweling jig, then wood glue the edges and bar-clamp until dry, re-sand. Add a beam to the counter to help support the seam joint.

Hi. How much finishing is required of the American Walnut Butcher Block counter tops prior to installation?

              • Staff Reviewer

                A:

It really depends on what type of finish you are using. If you are using a natural oil finish so it can be used as a cutting surface, it would take 2-3 coats, again, depending on how heavily it is applied. If you are not using in for a a cutting surface, you can apply 2-3 coats of water or oil based finish.

I would recommend using a butcher block oil!
                American Walnut?
Not sure why you would want to stain it, beautiful wood species.
To my knowledge there are no certified "food safe" stains but keep in mind that it will need a finish over the stain.

We do not cut these counter tops. This needs to be modified on-site by the owner/contractor.
