About Pine

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 6-7/8" x 6' New England White Pine:

I liked the product, it looks nice. But I was very upset that it was advertised as flooring and many pieces in my order were cracked or had holes.

    Service and delivery comments:

    delivery to store was prompt

I really love the look of this wood. The only downside was about 15-20% of the pieces weren't usable. I guess for the price you have to expect this.

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 6-7/8" x 6' New England White Pine:

we installed this on the ceiling. each end needed to be cut to be square, then we cut a chamfer on the ends too. this would be a horrible floor in my opinion, but it worked great on our ceiling. i intend to do another house out of the same material. it is pine so the boards were not perfectly straight, but not bad. i was impressed.

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 6-7/8" x 6' New England White Pine:

My wife does the finish work, but installing is a breeze...softer wood means easier cuts. This stuff is on floors throughout the house including the kitchen - bathrooms are tiled. I've got it on ceilings and walls in certain rooms too (just flip em over). End cuts need squared off on about 1/2 the boards, else I'd probably give 5 stars, and then there's the occasional board that isn't the exact width either. The rustic look is what we're going for and I install on weekends and evenings, so I do not take the time to square off the ends unless two un-square ends butt against each other and need it :D

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 6-7/8" x 6' New England White Pine:

LL does have delivery challenges. They deliver early, they deliver late. They forget to call you sometimes. So what! The good deals are worth the minor inconveniences.

And for the guy who wants to dance on his new eastern pine floor? This stuff is not meant to be a faux hardwood dance floor! It's gunna dent and scratch. And you will not have any issues with turning the beveled side towards the floor. It's there as an option to show or not show.

I just got my order. 700 sq ft. Using it to panel the walls and ceiling of my garage turned woodworking shop. Using southern yellow pine on the floor.

I took the advice of others and ordered more than I need. That was a mistake. I will need less than 10% extra.

I received no bowed, cupped or crooked boards. A few boards had thru knot holes and all the edges need to be re-cut to 90 degrees. I'll probably end up with a couple dozen extra boards. I'll just rip them to make trim boards.

My only regret was not waiting a few more weeks to order as the price dropped by 29 cents a sq ft.

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 6-7/8" x 6' New England White Pine:

I have never installed a floor before so had someone with experience get me started, so glad that i read lots of reviews here and learned a lot about the floors before i got them. So, i was not surprised by the imperfections of the floors or the occasional knots that had holes all the way through, or that some boards were warped. I did have to cut pieces off of many of the boards but I kept most of the boards as is because I didn't want it to look perfect but instead more of the rustic feel. I get the most compliments on the floors, they make the feel of the house and if i had to do again I would pick this exact floor and from the same place, Lumber Liquidators. They were great to work with and I feel I got a great product for the discounted price.

We are using this wood for our kitchen and a bedroom ceiling. We also are doing half a wall in the kitchen. We stained them with a white-wash, two coats, and it is beautiful. I am planning on buying more. It is easy to stain and light enough to lift and move around. I have nothing bad to say about it. You will be happy with this product. We are delighted.

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 6-7/8" x 6' New England White Pine:

Previously I've installed both wood and laminate floors successfully. This product was used in a bonus room above the garage. Unfortunately, the pine flooring had a beveled edge which was not mentioned in the product description. I didn't want a beveled edge since this would create an indentation between each plank which will catch dirt and make the floor difficult to play or dance on without catching a toe or heel. When I called LL I was told I could turn the planks over since only one side is beveled. Having waited several weeks longer for delivery than expected, my work schedule was already delayed and I decided to install the product as LL advised. It looks okay, but I wonder if the beveled edge will sag down or wear unevenly over time. The tongue and groove edges were extremely fragile and many snapped off just moving them carefully from the truck. Luckily I bought 20% more planks than needed because none were left to spare due to breakage and imperfections. I would not buy this product again or recommend it. There are better products for the same price which are less of a headache to install.

                Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was not prompt. I was told by LL hotline that the products would be delivered on a certain Tuesday. On that date, I called the local LL store to be sure the product was in and was rudely told, "My store doesn't get shipments in on Tuesday. We only get deliveries on Thursdays. Your order missed the last shipment so it will be on the next truck which comes in two weeks." So two weeks later on Wednesday I called to be sure the order was in and they told me it arrived on Tuesday so I could come get it. I wasn't amused by the misinformation or the "too bad for you" attitude of the local store employees.

                      A:

Engineered wood and floating floors (floors not attached to the subfloor) are most recommended for radiant heat. However, if you should choose to use solid wood for this application select species with the highest stability ratings (white pines stability is very low) . Be aware that even species with better dimensional stability characteristics cannot predictably be guaranteed to perform well over radiant heat. Therefore, solid wood applications over radiant in-floor heat is not recommended nor warrantied. Because of the wide array of in-floor heating systems on the market each with its own features and limitations please consult with your radiant flooring provider for installation methods and application advice.

                      A:

Yes but only after regular fasteners have installed flooring. Cut nails are used as a decorative touch and are placed straight over floor joists.

WIDE PLANK 5” and WIDER UNFINISHED PINE INSTALLATION [ Two install options]
                      1. (Installation using screws and plugs) Roll out your black felt or rosin paper perpendicular to the floor joist and tack it down, then snap chalk lines on the black felt or rosin paper to get a straight starting line and to also mark the floor joist in the floor. The chalk line for the first row must be accurate to make sure the first row is straight.

Install the first row with long straight boards and leave an expansion gap equal to the thickness of the board at the wall. Cut the board ends so butt joints occur over floor joists. These will be nailed into the floor joist later with cut nails. Stagger butt joints from row to row so they don’t line up across the floor. Make board cuts using a sliding miter saw, with this you will get straighter cuts and most rental companies should have these.

Pre-drill and face nail the first row with 8d steel finish nails to avoid splitting or use a 15 gauge finish nailer to make the job go quicker. Nail into every joist to keep this row from moving when you tap in the next rows.

After the first row, nail the next rows using a hardwood flooring nailer or stapler with nail spacing 8” apart and 1 to 3” from the board ends. With bowed boards you may have to screw down a wedge to hold the board in place until it is nailed with the hardwood nailer. If the gap still won’t tighten up, cut the board into shorter lengths.
If the last row installed is less than 1” use yellow carpenters wood glue along with finish nails to hold it in place.

Mark each joist location with a string line and make a guide to space the screw holes about 1-3/4” from the board edge. Two screws are sufficient to hold a 6” wide board flat, but a wider board will require three screws. Then drill ½” holes wherever you put a mark with guide. In the center of each hole drill a 1/8” pilot hole and drive a wood screw. Use screws long enough that will catch 1” into the subfloor. With a plug cutter make matching hardwood plugs and install them either with the grain or across the grain with a yellow carpenter’s wood glue and cut off any excess of wood with a hand saw. (This will be sanded smooth during the
sanding process). Top nailing wider pine is recommended to help prevent board cupping and splitting later on.

                      2. The chalk line for the first row must be accurate to make sure the first row is straight.

After the flooring is installed use a 2-1/2” decorative cut nail for top nailing the pine floor at the floor joist. Mark each joist location with a string line and drill pilot holes for the cut nails to avoid splitting. Make a guide to space the nails about 1-3/4” from the board edge. Two nails are sufficient to hold a 6” wide board flat, but a wider board will require three nails. Be sure to set the cut nails 1/8” below the surface so during the sanding process the machines will not hit the metal. Top nailing wider pine is recommended to help prevent board cupping and splitting later on.

2 questions... 1. if we choose the wider planks, will we need to nail them down differently than normal t and g? Just shoot through the t?
                    2. These boards will need to be sanded before stained? Or just stained/sealed?

                    Thanks
