First time DIY installer

By Saltville Bum

from Concord, NC

Overall I was very happy with the 3/4" x 2 1/4" Millrun Classic Gunstock Oak hardwoods. I understood that there would be a higher ratio of defects in the Millrun or Grade 2, but I felt there was more than there should be. I ordered 8 boxes (20 sq ft per box) and when I was finished, I had almost 75% of one box or almost 15 sq ft of defects. Defects that I encountered were: no tongues, splintered wood (not strong enough to install) and weakened grooves (splintered or part of groove damaged).

Service and delivery comments:

I was very happy with Mike at the Salisbury, NC store. He was very patient and suggested tools/materials that I would need. I did not feel that he tried to sell me more than I needed.

Mostly good product. One box was damaged and the wood inside had been used and pulled up and reboxed. Should have been obvious and not sent home with me. No phone call when my order came in. Was originally told my product was discontinued and later told it wasn't. Customer sevice was great about correcting issues however.

      Decent Floors Nice look

The online sales people were not helpful, but instore Ashton (chesterfield stores was great!). It was a must to mix the boxes. Some of the boards were very light others super dark like they didn't belong to the same finish. I ordered 40 boxes, most were ok some minor warps and worm holes. Just used the bad pieces under the stove and dishwasher. The size variation was good in each box.

Next time will buy a high quality product.

      too many warped pieces

      Cons

      • "several" Warped Pieces

      Best Uses

This flooring is beautiful; HOWEVER, there were a LOT of warped pieces. The policy is that you have to return the "whole" box if you want to return for warped pieces. I had several boxes w/ warped pieces and lived about 35 to 40 minutes away from Lumber Liquidators. that meant I chose to continue on and only go back at end to get one more box to finish job. It can be a hassle to make several trips. The folks at Lumber Liquidators though were very pleasant to deal with AND the final product does look beautiful. you just have to have the time to make exchanges and I was just too busy.

This is a midrange product. Be sure to factor in a lot of extra as it arrived with many unusable pieces. However, it looks good installed and I would buy again.

                    A:

No additional sealer is recommended over factory finished flooring. This will void the finish warranty and possibly ruin the floor. Proper care should be employed to help your finish last. If it gets worn or damaged, these floors can be re-finished.

                  Can this floor be refinished?

                  • Staff Reviewer

                    A:

                    Yes!
Full refinishing will take slightly under a 1/32" off the veneer of the wood flooring. The thickness of the veneer and how much wear and dents a floor has will determine how many times it can be refinished. Solid hardwood that is ¾" thick may be refinished 4 to 7 or more times depending on how much wood was taken off on each refinishing.
We recommend that hardwood floor refinishing be done by a professional and if your not sure if you can refinish your flooring have professional sand and finish expert come to your home and evaluate your flooring. Thank you for your inquiry.

I want to put hardwood on newly built particle board and on carpeted plywood. Is this something that I can DIY or should I hire a professional? I have some experience doing things like this in my last home. I am looking at the 3/4 hard wood flooring. Any thoughts?

                    A:

Particle board is not recommended for this nail down product (OSB is OK).

Particleboard, Luan or Masonite: is not recommended, remove or cover with 3/8” plywood. Minimum of 3/8˝CDX panel thickness is recommended when used as an underlayment over an existing subfloor.
                    • Avoid pressure treated plywood for interior use. These can have elevated moisture or latent with rot resistant chemicals.
You can find complete installation instructions on the product page by clicking on the installation tab and then clicking on - Installation Guide.

Pet urine is a caustic and can burn finishes if left there too long. When cleaned quickly it is not a problem. Our most pet friendly flooring would be our vinyl plank floating flooring.

This is a polyurethane finish and has an (aluminum oxide) high abrasion sealer which is tested to meet at least 550 cycles using taber abrasion test.

                  what is engineered hardwood flooring

                    A:

Engineered hardwood is constructed with layers of hardwood veneer, glued and heat pressed together to create a product that can range in thickness from 5/16” up to 9/16", having 3 to 8 plys. The top veneer can range in thickness up to 1/4", depending on the manufacturer. In order to create an engineered hardwood, these plys or layers are stacked on top of each other with each layer or grain of the wood facing perpendicular to each other. Once the desired thickness is achieved, the boards are then cut into the correct board width. From there, the boards are then manufactured to have a tongue or groove on the edges. The final step is to add stain and finish. By design, engineered hardwood becomes less susceptible to the effects of moisture and temperature fluctuations. Therefore, engineered hardwood is referred to as being dimensionally stable. Solid hardwood is not as efficient in dimensional stability because the grain throughout the board runs in only one direction. The positive stability of engineered hardwood allows it to be glued directly to concrete above or below grade and is also perfect for radiant heat applications, moisture barriers over concrete is always recommended.

Some styles of engineered flooring can be stapled down, nailed down, glued to cement or floated.
