3/4" x 3" American Walnut Unfinished Flooring*

American Walnut is one of the most highly sought after domestic hardwood flooring choices.  The heartwood used in this flooring choice is composed of luxurious chocolate browns that fill a room with rich color.  The grain pattern of American walnut is mostly straight but it also exhibits the wavy grain that is so highly desired among homeowners.  The unrivaled opulence of this wood has placed it among the most prized North American hardwoods.

  • Q:

my current floors are all unlevel warped prettybad can I just go over the top of these floors and put in new ones over them.

Subfloor for solid hardwood or naildown engineered needs to be within 3/16" in 10’ or 1/8" in 6' variance. Options are Sand high areas or joints, use wood shims wedged between joists and the subfloor to raise it. Protruding nails/staples should be ground flat. Build-up low spots with layers of 15 lb builders felt, old vinyl, plywood or shims (do not use cement leveling compounds). Note: Structural issues that may have caused the subfloor to be un-level should be remedied first.

When subfloor is off too much, add a layer of 5/8" CDX Plywood and correct leveling issues with shims, ripped down framing lumber.

  • Q:

We are looking at placing this in the entryway of our home. We live in Michigan where we get a lot of snow and use salt on out sidewalks. Would this be a good choice for a durable floor?

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.

  • Q:

I am looking to possibly install heat under the flooring. Is this a product that can be used with a heating element underneath to provide a heated floor, if not, is there any wood flooring products that could be used with heating underneath?
Asked on 2/17/2013 by gamer from Trevose, Pa.

    1 answer

No. American Walnut is not a highly stable wood. Engineered flooring can be successfully applied over in-floor radiant heat. Know the species you intend to use and how it may interact with radiant heat. Not all species are recommended for this installation, choose species highest in stability ratings for this application. For the best of both worlds an engineered flooring with a species known for high stability is ideal. You can compare the different species by typing "stability" in our Flooring 101 Search, in addition type, "radiant" for more on radiant heating installation. Flooring 101 -

      NATURAL and Better

ALTERNATE GRADE NAME(S): Also referred to as

      First or Second Grade,

      Millrun or #1 Common

SUMMARY: Natural Grade flooring contains distinct variations in coloration and varying wood characters. Natural grade flooring will have a slightly longer average plank length compared to Rustic grade products.

DETAILED: Specific characteristics of Natural grade flooring will vary widely by wood species; however, typically include such things as: minor imperfections in milling; imperfections in face-work which cannot be wholly removed by an ordinary method of sanding; slight variations in angle of end matching; varying wood characteristics such as spots, streaks, slightly open checks, and pin/worm holes; small splits, broken knots or knot holes; and shallow back. Natural grade pre-finished flooring will have a plank face that is free of most finishing imperfections; however, may contain a limited amount of minor blemishes including, but not limited to: light grainy surface/debris, bubbles, streaks, uncoated bevel, finish chipping, dents, or equivalent type characters. When assembled, Natural grade flooring should not exhibit gaps exceeding 0.031”or end/side over-wood(e.g. height variation between adjacent planks) exceeding 0.030”.

NOTE: This grade description is intended only to provide general characteristics of the identified wood grade, and is not all-inclusive. Specific wood characteristics and acceptance criteria may vary by wood species. A 5% allowance per box is established for pieces exhibiting one or more milling, grading, or finishing defects.
