Virginia Mill Works Co.- 1/2" x 5" Astoria Birch- Prefinished Stained Handscraped Engineered Flooring- 30 Year Warranty

Colonial American homes were built with wooden floors that were sawn using basic hand-held tools. The hand-crafted workmanship that went into those floors can be found in Virginia Mill Works handscraped floors.

Length: 1-4' (400mm-1200mm)

Quick Highlights:
- Superior Strength and Stability
- Handscraped Engineered
- Nail, Glue or Float Installation
- Backed with a 30 Year Warranty

About Handscraped Flooring:
Handscraped or distressed hardwood floors have a natural worn appearance. They look like floors from the days when floors were finished by hand.

About Engineered:
Hardwood veneer layers are stacked on one another, with the grain of the adjacent layers oriented perpendicular to each other.
Because wood expands and contracts in the direction of the grain, one layer stabilizes the next, resulting in a product that is less susceptible to the effects of moisture & temperature change.

Did you know?
An estimated 60-70 million Americans are affected by house dust, which can cause itchy eyes, sneezing, rashes, breathing difficulty and sinus trouble because of trapped pollens and molds in carpets, upholstery and curtains.
Not even frequent vacuuming will eliminate those microscopic troublemakers.

We caught up with real Lumber Liquidators' customers who volunteered to discuss their floor shopping, buying and installation experiences. In no way did these customers receive compensation for their kind words. (They're speaking straight from the heart.)

  • Q:

I've had the floor for 5 months and I'm already noticing numerous scratches and dent that penetrate past the day stain into the light natural birch color. Any best practices or care instructions for masking these?
Asked on 7/27/2014 by Thomas from United States

      A:

Wood floors like furniture will scratch and dent if not properly protected. It is recommended to use furniture pads (included in our cleaning kit) under the furniture legs. Pet nails should be kept trimmed and sharp objects (including high heels) kept away from the floor. Often scratches can be adequately repaired using liquid scratch covers. Dents and nicks can be filled using wood floor repair kits available at your local home store. If your floor is severely damaged please consult a professional about refinishing, an individual board replacement may be all that’s needed.

  • Q:

Hi, we were preparing to order this product along with the matching stair nose, however we can't find treads & risers for this flooring. We would like the treads and risers to match the floor. Should we just purchase additional flooring to complete our project on the stairs? Thnx.
Asked on 2/21/2014 by Dee & Jay from Savannah, Georgia

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

We do not have matching treads. This can be installed on stairs with stair nose.

Clear the stairs of all debris. If your stair treads overlap the riser, cut that overlap off even with your riser.  Glue and nail nosing; pre-drill nail holes and countersink finish nails over stair stringers.   Then install flooring up to your riser. Flooring can be used as your riser up to the next step/tread. Repeat steps and always work from the bottom stair up.

how many layers of wood (i.e., 7, or 9) and what type of finish I.E., aluminum oxide and how many coats?

      A:

This product is composed of a plywood core, itself made of cross-bonded wood veneer (7 ply) and a 2mm surface wood wear layer. The wear layer is finished by 7 coats of polyurethane coating manufactured by Treffert or Klumpp. Thank you for your inquiry

  • Q:

    Is this flooring scratch resistant?
Asked on 1/14/2014 by Kathy from Gardnerville, Nevada

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

This product is scratch resistant but not scratch proof. Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.
      Thank you for your inquiry.

  • Q:

We just received our engineered hardwood flooring and were going over installation instructions and read not to install over particle board sub-flooring. We have 2x6 T&G sub-flooring with 1/2 inch particle board underlayment to even out flooring, since we have solid wood sub-flooring and not particle board can we install our wood over it without issue.

  • Q:

Can this and or any of these hardwood engineered floors be sanded down and refinished say 10 or 15 years down the road?
Asked on 7/18/2013 by Eddie from Elgin, IL

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Handscraped can theoretically be refinished but not with conventional sanding machines. In practice it would be very laborious. One point about our handscraped, it has an excellent finish (very durable) and when the rustic profile gets beat on the flooring still looks good.
However it does depend on the thickness of the solid veneer which makes up the engineered floor. Engineered flooring is made up of different layers and topped with a solid veneer which offers all the appearance of solid wood flooring. This top layer is available in different thicknesses ranging from 0.6mm to 6mm. However since you sand approximately 0.5mm off, and you need to leave at least 0.5mm of the veneer you can’t sand engineered flooring which only has a solid wood veneer of 0.6mm. Note this should be done by a professional and will be a jobsite decision.

  • Q:

What type of finish is on this floor? Shiny, glossy or non gloss?
Asked on 2/20/2013 by deb from Mobile, Al

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

      This has a semi-gloss finish.
I would recommend visiting your local Lumber Liquidators to look at the actual sample (take home samples are free) or order a sample to make sure this is the right product for you.
