Looks beautiful! Installed part shifted when tapping in another piece. Needed someone to stand on installed part to prevent shifting.[...] suggested how to estimate sq.ft. to buy to account for scrap. We have 3 full boxes left we can't use....or return...

Do 3/4 inch stair nose get top nailed for installation?
Asked on 2/14/2013 by hammer from louisville

          A:

For safety, stair parts should be both nailed and glued. Nails can be predrilled, countersunk and holes filled with matching filler. Working from the bottom step to the top step, apply about 1/2" thick bead of adhesive to the back of each board in an "S" type pattern then Nail the tongues.

Best adhesive to use is construction grade, 100% urethane from the LIQUID NAIL family of glues.

In addition, for strength stair nosing should also be back-glued and top-nailed. Joists or stringers support stair treads and risers. Pre-drill nail holes half way into the stair nosing over each stringer, nail through the board into the stringers using a 2"-2 1/2" 7d-8d finish nail, counter-sink and fill holes and fill with a matching filler.

      • Q:

Can this product be mitred for an open end step?

Also, is this product made to be level with the tread, or will there be there a lip when installed?
Asked on 8/26/2011 by Rob from North Brunswick, NJ

        1 answer

        • Staff Reviewer

          A:

The stairnose can be mitred to turn at outside open end steps. The nosings will be flush with the wood since they are grooved to match the tongue on the floor.

      • Q:

Can you buy stair nose that has a tongue instead of a groove?
Asked on 3/1/2011 by Tammy from colorado

        1 answer

        • Staff Reviewer

          A:

I am sorry but no. You could create this profile by making a spline out of wood and gluing it into the groove of the nosing, thus making a stair nose with a tongue.

      • Q:

Can I attach this product to concete stairs?

        • Staff Reviewer

          A:

You can, but you would have to use a solid wood moisture cure urethane adhesive to secure it to the concrete. I would suggest you consult with local building codes or a local building inspector to see what they would recommend for safety.
