BELLAWOOD 3/8" x 3" Brazilian Chestnut Prefinished Solid Hardwood Flooring

We Redefined Quality, Again. We set the quality standard by introducing a groundbreaking finish so tough it allowed us to offer one of the first 50 year warranties. Others followed. So, we raised the bar again. Now Bellawood is backed by a Certified 100 Year Transferable Warranty that covers you and generations to come.

Brazilian Chestnut is one of the hardest and most durable woods on the market. This wood's strength is coupled with beautiful chocolate tones and exceedingly fine graining. It also exhibits a vast range of rich color variations from a lighter understated brown to sultry deep brown hues. This unique blend of coloring has made the floor a top choice among discriminating home owners. This flooring fills any room with an unrivaled warmth and elegance.
This product is proudly finished in the USA.

About "Select Grade" Flooring
Select Grade has the most uniform color with no large knots and the longest average lenght of planks. Also referred to as First Grade.

It Taber Tested "the Best." When subjected to the industry sandpaper abrasion test, known as Taber Testing, Bellawood's durability results were more than double most comparably priced floors. There's good, there's better?and then there's Bellawood.

We caught up with real Lumber Liquidators' customers who volunteered to discuss their floor shopping, buying and installation experiences. In no way did these customers receive compensation for their kind words. (They're speaking straight from the heart.)

QUALITY GUARANTEE: NO formaldehyde is used in the manufacturing or construction of this flooring.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/8" x 3" Select Brazilian Chestnut:

Our floor looks beautiful, but only immediately after it is cleaned. EVERY footprint shows up as dull spots. With thin socks on, my family's feet still leave dull spots. We don't wear shoes in our home, so the floors always look dirty and spotted. I am just soooooo disappointed. And I know, tell each member of my fam to wear thick socks or house-shoes...but my job isn't to constantly patrol our floor. :(

I'm not sure how to remedy the product--maybe finish the wood with a VERY matte finish?

we installed the Brazilian chestnut in three bedrooms, hallway, stairsteps and living room. We have two little girls 6 and 2, we have several scratches and gauges already and it has only been in for two years. I would not recommend this for high traffic or busy areas.

We love this product, the color variations are great and it seems to be very durable, time will tell! Installed it in dining room, kitchen, entryway, and hallway. The only flaw is out of 11 boxes only one had any dark wood in it, 3 pieces.

This floor is beautiful. Love the colors and depth. Not as scratch resistant as we hoped for an exotic hardwood that boasts such a high Janka rating. Although it appears that it is the finish coat on the surface that scratches easily.

In a large area have a professional install it, it is well worth the money. I have to caulk the areas where they had to undercut for the floor to fit. They did get most of the glue off but where they missed I have to go back and clean it.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/8" x 3" Select Brazilian Chestnut:

This product looks amazing when it is installed, but it does take some effort to get it to look good. Like the first reviewer stated, quite often you'll have mismatched planks that vary in width from 1/32" to 1/16". It may not seem like a big deal, but it does result in the lack of tight joints from time to time. If Bellawood could get the quality control down on this product, I would give it a 4.5 stars. I also ran into a few planks that didn't have a tongue or a groove on one end or the other. Again, not a big deal if you catch it before you nail it down, but I was always catching it after I nailed it down and consequently had to rip it out.

This product took me a long time to put down too. I think a lot of that factored into being overly cautious trying to find the right piece that would fit the best from the previous one put down (due to the 1/32 to 1/16 width discrepancies).

Overall, it looks really nice when it is all said and done. But, you have to be meticulous in selecting each piece that abuts the other and be patient making sure each joint is at tight as it can possibly be.

What is the size of the v-groove between boards? Is it a micro-groove?

                A:

                Yes it is considered micro-bevel.
I would recommend visiting your local Lumber Liquidators to look at the actual sample (take home samples are free) or order a sample to make sure this is the right product for you.

            • Q:

Why is there a difference in the widths of the planks? If this is grade A wood, you would expect it all to be the same. I want to use this flooring in my house, but I'm afraid of the widths being off so much. Is there a easy fix for this problem?
              Donna C
Asked on 4/17/2012 by Donna from White Oak, PA

              1 answer

              • Staff Reviewer

                A:

Because it is a natural wood product and is subject to the envirinment.
NOFMA/NWFA clearly state that due to the dimensional change due to exposure to environmental conditions, milling tolerances are only valid at the time of original milling at the factory. You cannot measure the width or thickness of a board after that time and compare to established milling tolerances. It is not a valid measurement.
For the purposes of determining acceptability at the time of installation (assuming proper acclimation under controlled conditions), the installer must use the tolerances for visible gapping/overwood. To do this, the product must be assembled tightly according to good installation practices (not less than 6” between the ends of adjacent boards, no two adjacent boards can be the same length, etc.). Assuming proper acclimation and good assembly/installation practices, Bellawood gap/overwood tolerances are: VISIBLE GAPS: Select Grade: ≤0.025” VISIBLE OVERWOOD: Select Grade: ≤0.020”

Please note, any visible gaps/overwood less than the maximum tolerances above are not considered defects and do not apply to the 5%-10% defect/waste allowance based on the species guidelines. Pieces that exhibit gaps/overwood in excess of these tolerances should be culled at the time of installation. Installation constitutes acceptance. Only those visible gaps/overwood in excess of these tolerances apply to the 5-10% defect/waste allowance.
Bellawood gap/overwood tolerances are going to be within basic milling standards.

Keep in mind that milling standards are based on NWFA/NOFMA standards which are National or Domestic floors and do not take into account the milling standards of exotic woods. While most manufacturers will use this standard for exotic woods there is no set standard by NWFA or NOFMA for these tolerances.
In addition these tolerances are based on domestic plain sawn woods. It does not take into account the mix of ¼ sawn and rift sawn material that are included in the wood.

All wood species can change color over time due to oxidation or when exposed to light. In some species, the change can be more dramatic and may darken in color over time, while others tend to lighten. Currently there is no known value set for Patina or color change of a species so contractors and or customers should be aware of this normal condition. The patina process is unrelated to the urethane finishes.

                A:

Full refinishing will take slightly under a 1/32” off the veneer of the wood flooring. The thickness of the veneer and how much wear and dents a floor has will determine how many times it can be refinished. Solid hardwood that is ¾” thick may be refinished 4 to 7 or more times depending on how much wood was taken off on each refinishing. Low profile solid wood flooring like 5/16” thick flooring may be able to be refinished twice if the flooring is in good shape. Engineered flooring with a 1/8” wear layer or more will be able to be refinished at least once. If the engineered product has a 1/16” wear layer a professional sander may be able to refinish it, but many won’t take the chance in case they make a mistake and take too much off the wear layer. We recommend that hardwood floor refinishing be done by a professional and if your not sure if you can refinish your flooring have professional sand and finish expert come to your home and evaluate your flooring.

My daughter and I will be installing 5/16 by 2 1/2 inch chestnut in her 3 bedroom 900+ sq ft house 1986 vintage house located in Loveland Colorado. Plywood floor over 16" studs previously carpeted.
We would like to purchase our own floor nailer. What staple would be the best for this floor, we see nylon or coated staples and what gage would be the best staple and nailer? Don't see any reviews on installation nailers regarding which provides the least splitting problems and depth control of the staple.

For the BELLAWOOD 3/8" x 3" Select Brazilian Chestnut flooring I would recommend you use an 18 gage cleat nail that is 1" up to 1 1/4" in length. You can use a Powernail 50P nail gun or a Powernail Flex nail gun. Both of these nail guns can be adjusted to the 3/8" floor height.

                A:

Bellawood solids 5/16" up to 1/2" thick can be glued down over a concrete subfloor that is on grade or below grade. Bellawood that is 3/4" thick cannot be glued down, but you can use our Elastilon underlayment to float it over a concrete subfloor. You can also build up a floating plywood system and nail down a Bellawood solid floor over concrete. To find the Bellawood installation instructions please click the link below.

I would not install over the particle wood. This is an underlayment that is not an acceptable sub-floor for nailing or gluing down a floor due to the way it is manufactured. You can remove the PB and replace it with plywood or use a minimum of 3/8" plywood over the top and then nail into that.

This product can be installed either way, but for your application fastening would be easier. You can find complete install instructions on our site "go to flooring 101 and search for your product".
