  • Q:

There is a strong odor when I open the boxes and that concerns me. What is it from? How long will it take to dissipate? Is it from hazardous chemicals?

      A:

I am sure you have concerns with the Bamboo as some people do.
Bamboo does have a distinct pungent, odor that is somewhat unpleasant when you are not used to the smell of Bamboo flooring. If you add in the fact that it sits for quite some time in a ship hold, boxed and wrapped in plastic. So it’s only natural that it will release an initial smell from the finish as does any product that has been pre-finished and boxed up in this manor for this length of time.
However the good news is it should quickly dissipate.
The MSDS sheet for the Morning Star that should answer most any additional questions you may have. I assure you Morning Star Bamboo meets and exceeds any and all European and United States standards.
Yes; It is a absolutely safe for you and your family. Unfortunately there are some people that are “hypersensitive to certain odors” and may react adversely to this product.

      A:

Carpet and pad needs to be removed for floating flooring installation because the locking mechanism will fail if not on a solid subfloor surface. In addition Padded Underlayment is not the same as carpet padding. It has more compression strength so the floating floor joints will be supported.

  • Q:

How well does this hold up to dogs?

      A:

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.

      A:

I have a Bellawood floor that holds up extremely well to our Hound Mix, Pit-Boxer, and another medium size mutt and a cat. Not to mention nieces, nephews, and work shoes. Excellent finish. It's not scratch free but no wood floor could be with these dogs. Harder floors like hickory (41% harder than Red Oak) or exotic floors will dent less easily. 3/4" hardwood can also be refinished several times. Light colors will hide potential scratches. Remember nothing is scratch proof but some do better than others.

Our higher warranty Laminate flooring holds up very well to dog nails and wear but cannot be refinished. Advantage is it's less expensive both for product and labor. Higher Warranty the better.

Our Schon engineered flooring has 7 coats of Treffert or Klumpp (made in Germany) highly resistant polyurethane finish with aluminum oxide anti-scratch and a 55% gloss. Being a natural material it may dent easier than laminate but it's real wood. Engineered can be refinished carefully once or twice.

For Bamboo our Morning Star and Bellawood brand has a superior finish and offers the hardest type of bamboo floor produced, "Strand Bamboo". It can be refinished too but only by professionals with bamboo experience as it's a grass product and more difficult than hardwood. Stranded would be my only choice if going with bamboo.

Resilient Vinyl flooring is a very tough floor and the most resistant against damp areas and is most resistant to accidents.

Regardless of the floor you choose, keeping nails trimmed is a good idea. Another recommendation is to cover nails with vinyl claw covers.

Proper care always helps. For general cleaning a swiffer type system works best. Not one that sprays the floor however. Lightly damp is fine but never soak or flood mop your floor. Have a no shoes policy as much as possible. Use felt pads on all furniture. Sweep often. Urine, when cleaned up quick isn't an issue but if left to dry it can burn finish.

Bellawood Cleaner works very well, find it here - http://www.lumberliquidators.com/catalog/section.jsp?categoryId=19

  • Q:

what does carbonized bamboo mean in the specifications
Asked on 1/13/2015 by meme from NC

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Carbonized or caramelizing is not a top stain but a manufacturing process. Natural bamboo is placed into a Carbonized over. Once in the oven pressure, steam, and heat are used to alter the color of the natural bamboo stems, changing them into the caramel brown color.

  • Q:

If we already have baseboards, do we also need to install half round trim?
    Asked on 12/28/2014 by Bev

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Generally no, if your baseboard is removed and then replaced to cover the recommended ⅜" expansion gap. If you leave the baseboard in place during installation; use shoe molding or quarter round molding to cover the expansion gaps.

  • Q:

Why do the specs say hardness is not applicable?
Asked on 12/12/2014 by Lee from NC

      A:

Engineered Hardwoods and the Janka Scale.
The Janka scale chart is not to be considered an absolute; it is designed to help people understand which woods are harder than others.
The Janka Hardness test is done in accordance with ASTM D 1037-7 testing methods. Lumber stocks tested ranges from 1" to 2" thick. (Resulting Janka Hardness Numbers are an average.) It important to note that no testing is done on flooring (but is done on “solid” wood species).
The Janka hardness test measures the resistance of a type of wood to withstand denting and wear. It measures the force required to embed an 11.28 mm (0.444 in) steel ball into wood to half the ball's diameter. This method leaves an indentation. A common use of Janka hardness ratings is to determine whether a species of wood is suitable for use as flooring.
Other factors that affect how flooring performs: type of core for engineered flooring like: pine, hdf (high density fiber board) , poplar, oak, birch....etc.. When choosing an engineered floor (other than the species) consider grain direction and thickness floor or top wear surface of the product, engineered hardwoods with thicker wear layers (more actual hardwood) will offer more resistance to dinging than ones with much thinner wear layers. The hardness ratings should not be the only deciding factor when selecting any hardwood floor.
