The Wood was Perfect!

By FF Mike

from Clay Twp., MI

Pros

  • Absolutely no waste (in 7 boxes)
  • Assorted sizes
  • Boards were uniform width
  • Enormous value
  • Look is magnificent
  • No tongue splits
  • Very, very easy to install

Cons

  • None at all

Best Uses

  • study/library

This was my very first try at installing wood floors of any type. I'm very handy, so I did not have any hesitation about doing it myself. Read the installation guide, the consumer comments/ratings, get/rent the right tools, watch a how-to video and you certainly can have great results. The wood was perfect, and I originally had reservations because of the cheap cost compared to other similar brands I was looking at. I surprised myself, because it was EASY. For the best random pattern, open up at least 3-4 boxes and mix the boards.

My wife and I purchased a new home and long story short ended up with some water damage from a pipe leak. We were left trying to decide to upgrade our builders grade stuff and do the work ourselves or have the insurance companies clowns come in and replace the builders grade stuff. We opted to have them do the laundry room (where the leak came from) and do the rest ourselves. I call them clowns only because the quality of work in the laundry room could have only come from a clown, hideous! We have an 80LB shepherd and a 40LB Vizsla and were initially looking at vinyl plank flooring. We never really wanted it, but figured it would be best having the dogs. After a TON of research we decided that solid hardwood was going to add the best bang for the buck on both appearance and added home value. We got a quote from a contractor just to see how much it would cost to have someone else do our 1250 sq ft 2nd floor. $12k for labor plus materials, ouch! Not that it was a bad price, but certainly one we couldn't afford. I had done construction (lots of flooring) in the past, never a hardwood install though. I researched online for months on do's and don'ts of hardwood installation. I had to buy a ton of tools (compressor, table saw, miter saw, flooring nailer, brad nailer,etc..) We then bought the materials +10% of sq footage from Lumber Liquidators who had the best deal. We went with the 3.25" cherry finished red oak from Casa De Colour. Some lessons learned from my install. Buy a straight edge and make 100% sure that your subfloor is level. We have some humps in our floor because I only eyeballed our subfloors. If a board is not fitting in very well don't force it! even if it's a big board. Choose a different one and move on, that's why you buy 10% extra. Last but not least, your house is a living moving object; a millimeter of movement on the foundation could equal an inch on the 2nd floor. Boards will move and stress and maybe even show a split, this is normal! enjoy!

    Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was awesome! I was deployed halfway around the world and the Lumber Liquidators folks delivered our over 1250 sq ft order and hand carried it upstairs. This gave me great piece of mind knowing that my wife didn't just wake up to a driveway full of planks one day. I carried several of these boxes around the house during the install, they weren't light!

Used this flooring in my office, living room and spare bedroom. As any floor my dogs nails seem to make a decent mark on them when they dig there claws in. Board quailty was extremly happy with. Long straight boards. Very few if none at all knots in lumber. Nice milling on tongue and groove sides.

                Service and delivery comments:

bottom cartons where smashed up from forklifts being moved so much but find that to be a common problem with anything from flooring to shingles so.

We installed 820 sq ft in livingroom, diningroom, kitchen & hallway. I would recommend for a friend. I got the matching wood floor vents. We used extra nails when installing to ensure they are solid and quiet. We also cut around the defects and used small leftover boards in the closets, fridge, stove areas in order to be efficient on wood usage.

                  Service and delivery comments:

We picked up the product in store but the customer service in helping me load it was great. We hired our own installers.

We purchased 23 boxes, 506 sq ft. for our living and dining rooms. Only three boards of the Cherry Oak were not usable. It has a beautiful finish. The tongue and groove locking, with the nail down application makes a very solid floor.

Service at Lumber Liquidators is great. I learned about the Bella product the Lumber Liquidator add/letters. The best thing about the product is you don't need a vacuum cleaner. I just use a "Swiffer". I also like the interlocking boards. I have no complaints at all about the product. I had purchased it before, a few years ago for one room and just did three additional rooms.

                                  Best Uses

We bought 1,500 square feet of this wood for our second floor. We loved the color and the price was right, especially for solid hardwood. While we are mostly satisfied with our new floor, we quickly saw that many of the board finishes began to crack after installation.

We spoke to the corporate office who sent an inspector and concluded that the damage was "part of the waste" wood, i.e., we should have been more careful about which boards we used. I'll gladly throw some side-eye at that assumption. The boards' finish cracked after the fact, and therefore, we had no way of anticipating any damage. We were given a whopping $200 refund for our trouble (wheee!)

                                    The bottom line:

-After talking to a contractor, the only way to fix the cracks is to sand and re-stain the wood.
-The damage isn't what I'd call horrible, but if you're Type A, it's helpful to know that your floor won't be perfect with this product.
-The price remains the most affordable we could find for solid wood.
-The onsite staff in Bellevue, WA were very helpful.
-This wood still beats carpeting any day.

If you want quality without the drama, stick to maple. We chose it for our first floor and have no complaints. It's a little more expensive, but there's not a crack in sight.
