I really love the color and the look of this but the wood is so soft that a simple rolling cart dings it if loaded with much weight at all. I ran a cart across this and have identified at least four slats I'm going to have to cut out and repace since they took a huge depression from the cart that was maybe a 100 pounds.

I used this product both in my dining room, my living room, and will soon be putting it on my stairs and upstairs hallways. The floor went down smoothly. The great thing about this stain is that you can use a black marker with any scratch or chip mark and just wipe away the marker once touched up and it is completely hidden. We went with it BECAUSE of that perk.

The down side is the softness. If you are one to use high heels or have a girlfriend/wife that likes heels make sure she takes them off when trotting around the house. You will see pock marks if they do not.

Luckily because it is hand-scraped those are hidden slightly, but I can imagine what would happen if you had a party and these instructions were not adhered to.

This product should come with a warning that the 3.25" width is just an average. As my husband and I installed this flooring, we found that the boards varied in width by as much as 1/8" which caused much consternation. And not only did the width vary board to board it also varied from one end to the other of a single board. We consulted several friends who have laid other brands of flooring, and they assured us that this is not a common problem.

Birch is marginally harder than oak. As for the finish there is 7 coats of Treffert or Klumpp (made in Germany) highly resistant polyurethane finish with aluminum oxide anti-scratch and a 55% gloss. The same finish on oak would wear the same.

We recently installed the handscraped cocoa birch in our dining room. It is stunning... but, within a week, it was already scratched up and looking a mess. I bought some espresso stain and touched it up and that worked well. Now I'd like to polyurethane a few coats over the stain to protect the floor from future damage. Would a waterbased polyurethane work on this finish? I tested on an extra piece and it seems to be adhering well. Thanks

                                  A:

Section sanding and finishing is possible. You can tape around the effected boards, sand, and finish with a semigloss flooring grade waterbased urethane. The closest way to match gloss is to go to a local homecenter that has a computer matching system where they can read a sample of the flooring gloss percentage. This will give you decent results but is a bit of work. Resealing will void warranty. Sealer won't adhere to original finish unless it's lightly sanded and then use a water based flooring grade urethane. Or you would use a Bona Kemi prefinished floor resealing product. Www.bonakemi.com. However this is not recommended for pre-finished flooring unless it is worn and in need of refinishing.

If your floor becomes scratched or dull, repairs can often be made using ColorFill Floor Repair Putty.

Other Options; Our "Scratch Away" works well (SKU 10021566), or Bona Kemi Hardwood Floor Refresher, this may be your best and easiest answer for general wear and tear.

Proper care will help prevent scratches. An additional coat will not be as tough as original.
                                  .

For general cleaning a swiffer type system works best. Not one that sprays the floor however. Lightly damp is fine but never soak or flood mop your floor. Do not use steam mops. Have a no shoes policy as much as possible. Use felt pads on all furniture. Sweep often.

When kitchen base cabinets are installed over a floor the boards can separate or buckle when the moisture level (relative humidity) and temperature changes due to lack of expansion space.

what expansion room should be left between this and the wall? I see in the installation instructions it says 5/8" is this correct? Also, I was reading the other questions and a response to one them is you cannot use 18gauge staples or cleats because of the thickness of this product. However it is stated that the boards are 5/8" so from what I am reading 18 gauge would be just fine. Please correct if I am wrong.

                                  Yes 5/8" expansion is required.
18 gauge flooring cleats will work but not 18 gauge staples as they are not long enough.

can I purchase a gallon of stain for this product to do some touch-ups? does Lumber Liquidators or Virginia Mill Work sell the stain?

if not what do you suggest to stain the floor after sanding a few touch-up areas?

Unfortunately this stain is not available in a can for retail sale. I would recommend bringing a scrap piece of the flooring to a paint store and they should be able to match the stain for you. Thank you for your inquiry.

Low gloss laminates with AC3 ratings tend to be the most durable and scratch resistant. Many people also like to use ¾” hard solid wood flooring because it can be refinished many times if the dogs were to create a lot of scratches and wear to the flooring. Natural Strand bamboo could also work because it is such a hard species of flooring.
