Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Teak:

We're first time wood floor installers and installed in two bedrooms, will do other rooms later on. The tones in the wood are so warm and rich and with the variation of colors it pulls all of our wood doors, trims and furniture together beautifully. It's nothing shy of stunning.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Teak:

I had a Lumber Liquidators installer do the installation. He did NOT sort the boards; so I have major gaps in some places. Spaghetti gets lost in those gaps. Even where the boards are the same width there is more than average shrinkage. Since I had it installed by a professional, the moisture of the subfloor and wood was all checked before the floor was put down. The subfloor was also checked for level. But my floor has a half inch variation in depth at some places. This is a beautiful floor. Rich color. But you need a patient installer. And it is hard. Probably needs to be drilled, not just nail gunned around the edges as it splinters. My installer used alot of wood putty, much to my chagrin. I wish I could enjoy this floor since it is so pretty. But the cons make it hard since they are noticeable every day.
Also if you are considering this floor and have pets, it is sturdy, but you will see every paw print. I wish I'd gone with oak.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Teak:

Given the different widths, spend the time to measure both ends of each piece to insure you will not have gaps, to the salesmen credit, I was informed of this issue at the time of the sale, my material measured anywhere from 4.93" to 5.01"

Trim pieces, (thresholds, transitions, reducers) no way to match colors unless you are willing to return and reorder. Store was willing to do this, but time can be an issue.

      Service and delivery comments:

In store service was fine, delivery to store was as quoted, material arrive in good condition with just a few scratches, which I was able to cut out during installation, 1240 sq ft installed.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Teak:

I ordered the product from the local dealer, after delivery, let it set in my home a few weeks to condition to the space (conditioned), and then installed this product in Spring of 2012. Product is very dense/hard. Went through a few saw blades and rented an 18-guage nailer for the use as recommended in other reviews. Product was installed as a border around Australian Cypress as a center blocked. Installation went OK, not too bad.
A few months after the installation, I began to notice shrinkage in the Teak. Now there is enough space to set a coin between most of the boards. The Australian Cypress does not show the same shrinkage. Teak must have had a lot of moisture in it when shipped. Recommend letting it dry longer than usual or acclimate to environment, don't install during months of high moisture. As we've had drought conditions this past year in Oklahoma, moisture in the air is very low.
Be leary of this product as the density likely makes the drying process much longer.
In addition, as noted in other reviews, boards were not all the same width. Had to take the time to be selective when laying the rows. Sometimes missed one here and there, then regretted it the next row.

Awesome product with beautiful natural variations in the wood. there is some variation in the product size which requires some adjustement when installing, but I think that's typical of any natural wood product.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Teak:

I'm an architect and we decided to do a little renovation of our master suite and used the 'Brazillian Teak' (it's actually cumaru)in our bedroom. It just went down last week, but wow! Really looks great. I have no idea about finish durability yet but the wood itself is extremely hard so I know it won't dent from heels, etc. Beautiful color and finish. We used 6" width and one benefit of the 6" is that it goes down very fast. We did a 300sf bedroom in a day, not including baseboard installation or thresholds.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Teak:

Reading the previous reviews, we knew that each board could be a different width. This is important is because if you install boards of different widths on the same row, there will be a gap in the next row. (See the sample layout in the store.) We measured each board's width to a tenth of an inch. We sorted the boards by their widths, then we sorted by color. We laid out the floor in another room to see that the colors looked good then we installed the floor. It looks beautiful!

Each box had plenty of long pieces.

One thing we did not ask was how to use the floor nailer near a wall. We ended up using a regular nail gun.

Teak is very hard, therefore, have a new saw blade.

Good Day! What is the AVERAGE length of wood? I understand they are 1' - 7' in lengths, but I don't want to end up with more short lengths than long lengths (I do not like that look). Thank you!

My house was just installed B. teak 3/4*5". I noticed when the sun light get in, I see bumps on the surface where the nails are locted in most of the plank. The nail were used standard u shape, like staple. The floor doesn't look smooth, look like ocean? Is it too long nail? Under neath was sub floor, not concrete.
            How to correct it.
            Thanks,

              A:

The recommended fastener for this exotic species is an 18 gauge cleat nailer (as covered in our installation instructions).
You can find complete installation instructions on the product page by clicking on the specs tab and then clicking on - Installation Guide.pdf
Unfortunately the only way to get rid of the bumps is to sand the entire floor down and refinish.
              Thank you for writing in.

Could the Brazilian Teak 3/4" x 5" be glued down to concrete slab?

              A:

              Unfortunately not recommended.
This is a solid 3/4" product designed to be nailed to a wood substrate.
But can be installed over concrete using our Elastilon underlayment.
What you should know about Elastilon Strong
An Elastilon-backed wood floor is much faster to install than traditional nail or glue-down methods.
Elastilon Strong can be installed on new concrete floors, handling up to 3.9% moisture content. A vapour barrier of at least 6 mil PE should be used below grade and on newly poured concrete above grade where the moisture content is above 3.9%.
Laid down with a 5/8” (15 mm) expansion gap, Elastilon Strong creates a dynamic, floating floor that expands or contracts naturally with the hardwood.
Elastilon Strong has no odor and is free of volatile materials.
              Elastilon Strong gives cushioned comfort.
1/8” (3 mm) thick Elastilon Strong has ratings of IIC 62 and STC 54.
              Thermal resistance: R _ 0,15 (m K) / W
Elastilon Strong carries a 70-year limited warranty. Thank you for your inquiry.

Cumaru, also known as Brazilian Teak, is an increasingly popular hardwood used for flooring in the US. While it is moisture resistant, and used as an outdoor decking material (UNFINISHED only), it is not classified as marine teak. Urethane Prefinished flooring should not be used in anything but a climate controlled building.

          • Q:

I have ordered apox 600 sq ft 3/4 x 5 BELLAWOOD "Brazilian Teak". As I was preparing the room this weekend I discovered I have 1/4" Masonite over the top of 3/4" x 6" subfloor planks buffered by 15# tare paper.
Do I need to remove the Masonite product?

Are the 3/4" x 6" planks suitable w/o additional "OSB" or plywood ?

I would recommend removing the masonite layer and put down new 15 lb roofing felt.
              SUBFLOOR PREPARATION
Do not install flooring directly over joist without subflooring.
All structural panels/underlayment must be installed sealed-side down, and provide ¾” perimeter spacing. Square-edged or non tongue and grooved panels used as a subfloor will require a minimum 1/8˝ (3 mm) expansion space between all plywood seams.
Panels must meet minimum CDX grade Exposure 1 and US Voluntary Product Standard PS1-95, PS2-04 or Canadian performance standard CAN/CSA 0325-0-92 for construction sheathing. Check underside of panel for codes. Minimum of 3/8˝panel thickness is recommended when used as an underlayment.
Note that joist spacing determines minimum subfloor thickness.
              • Joist spacing 16” on center (oc)
Plywood: Minimum of (5/8˝) Oriented Strand Board (osb): Minimum (3/4˝, 23/32”) Advantech Minimum (3/4˝, 23/32”)
              • Joist spacing 16” up to 19.2” (oc)
Plywood: Minimum of (3/4˝, 23/32”) Oriented Strand Board (osb): Minimum of (3/4˝, 23/32”)
              • Joist spacing over 19.2”up to maximum 24” (oc)
Plywood: Minimum of (7/8”) Oriented Strand Board (osb): Minimum of (1”)
              • Particleboard or Masonite: is not recommended, remove or cover with 3/8” plywood.
•Avoid pressure treated plywood for interior use as these can have high moisture content and latent with rot resistant chemicals.

              A:

It is understood throughout the Hardwood industry, that determinations of compliance regarding specification in board-width measurements or height tolerances can only be made at the time of milling – it cannot be made after installation. This is because wood is hygroscopic and will continue to expand or shrink in relation to its environment (humidity, temperature, etc). For this reason, exact board milling specifications will continue to play a secondary role to the actual sight appearance during installation.

Unlike "paint in a can" where every drop may be used, it is to be expected that wood flooring, a product of nature will tend to have natural occurring irregularities. Because of this, installers will often "rack out" or lay-out a room to get an overall visual of board placement, before installation. Next during the installation, as installers are nailing down the boards they "cull-out" or select-out individual boards that may be undersize or oversized just as they would remove any boards that may have finish issues. Often a defect can be trimmed off and the remainder board utilized in closets or placed near walls. Twisted or warped boards are simply not used.

Any board deemed unacceptable to you in size, shade or color, should simply be selected out during the installation. For example; wormholes, knots or mineral deposits seen as long dark surface streaks are naturally occurring wood characteristics, not true manufactured defects, these can easily be selected out if desired. Individual boards having finish issues or width variances from end to end should also be culled or selected out. Boards having widths 1/8” narrower than surrounding boards should be selected out and placed all together in the same row minimizing side gapping, or not used. Over-wood, equal to and under 1/50" (0.020) in Select grade flooring is with in standards. Over-wood, equal to and under 1/32" (0.030) in Natural and Rustic grade flooring is considered with in our milling standards.

Yes, variations in board width or over-wood can be frustrating for many who wish to install wood floorings for themselves. However, experienced floor installers as well as wood manufactures understand how solid wood behaves and therefore have furnished instructions and procedures for successful installations.

To prevent most installation problems, it is highly recommended that customers be home during installation day so they have a say in acceptable board placements, if not, they allow their installer’s total judgment for board placements.

Hi. I am thinking of buying this wood, but I first need to know: does this wood darken with age?? I was going to purchase Brazilian Walnut, but then someone alerted me that this gets VERY dark brown over time. So now I am wondering about the Teak. I like the woods would a good color variation. Also, is there a way to request more dark boards in the mix that they give us upon ordering? what is "premium grade"? thanks.

All wood species can change color over time due to oxidation or when exposed to light. In some species, the change can be more dramatic and may darken in color over time, while others tend to lighten. Currently there is no known value set for Patina or color change of a species so contractors and or customers should be aware of this normal condition. The patina process is unrelated to the urethane finishes.
This product comes in select grade only and unfortunately there is no way to get more or less dark vs light boards with this natural product.

You could reseal prefinished flooring after it is installed, but this would void the finish warranty on the flooring and create extra expense for you after already buying a new floor with a 110yr finish warranty. Adding a new finish won’t prevent all moisture from going into the seams. Wood will expand and contract with climate changes. If the flooring were to contract later and create seasonal gapping, a spill can cause water to get into the gaps. It is best to only add a new finish when the old finish starts to wear more than you like or if you have a lot of scratches you want covered up. We recommend that you use a professional sand and finish expert if you did decide to add a new finish to the flooring.
