  • Q:

Can this hickory flooring be glued instead of nailed?
Asked on 6/22/2013 by Wayne the builder from Lake Havasu, AZ

      A:

This is a solid 3/4" product designed to be nailed to a wood substrate.
But can be installed over concrete using our Elastilon underlayment.
What you should know about Elastilon Strong
An Elastilon-backed wood floor is much faster to install than traditional nail or glue-down methods.
Elastilon Strong can be installed on new concrete floors, handling up to 3.9% moisture content. A vapour barrier of at least 6 mil PE should be used below grade and on newly poured concrete above grade where the moisture content is above 3.9%.
Laid down with a 5/8” (15 mm) expansion gap, Elastilon Strong creates a dynamic, floating floor that expands or contracts naturally with the hardwood.
Elastilon Strong has no odor and is free of volatile materials.
      Elastilon Strong gives cushioned comfort.
1/8” (3 mm) thick Elastilon Strong has ratings of IIC 62 and STC 54.
      Thermal resistance: R _ 0,15 (m K) / W
Elastilon Strong carries a 70-year limited warranty. Thank you for your inquiry.

  • Q:

How are the widths measured? On a board 3-1/4" like this, what is the face width? Is it 3" of flat surface width plus 1/4" to 3/8" of tongue? Can you measure a piece of 3/4 x 3-1/4" flooring? I want it for something other than flooring and need to rip/saw the tongue off and maybe the groove too, and need to know actual widths to determine what dimensions I will end up with. Thanks.

  • Q:

What does it mean, "square edge?" I didn't notice it mentioned for other flooring you sell. I'm actually looking for something without a tongue & groove if I can find it here.

This is an unfinished tongue and groove floor. Only prefinished floors have a micro-bevel.

  • Q:

What subfloor is needed? Can this be placed over particle board or on a below-grade cement floor?
    Asked on 8/16/2011 by Anonymous

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Minimum 5/8" plywood. This solid 3/4" product is not recommended to be nailed over particle board (no holding power) and the only way to install this in a below grade application is to use our Elastilon underlayment.

  • Q:

Will Hickory stand up to my mastif. How does it rate to scratching from the dogs nails as they run across the floor? What type of wood would you recommend for dog owners?
    Asked on 7/29/2010 by Brenda

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Hickory is very hard with a 1820 rating on the Janka hardness scale. This is an unfinished product so you want to consult with a finish manufacture to get the most durable finish for the flooring. To help prevent scratches to the finish try to keep your pets claws trimmed or covered with vinyl claw covers. This wood would be a good choice for a dog owner because it is hard, and the light color will show less scratches.
