Virginia Mill Works Co.- 1/2" x 5" Hanging Rock Birch- Prefinished Handscraped Engineered Flooring- 30 Year Warranty

Length: Random 10" - 48.6"

Colonial American homes were built with wooden floors that were sawn using basic hand-held tools. The hand-crafted workmanship that went into those floors can be found in Virginia Mill Works handscraped floors.

About Handscraped Flooring:

Handscraped or distressed hardwood floors have a natural worn appearance. They look like floors from the days when floors were finished by hand.

About Engineered:
Hardwood veneer layers are stacked on one another, with the grain of the adjacent layers oriented perpendicular to each other.
Because wood expands and contracts in the direction of the grain, one layer stabilizes the next, resulting in a product that is less susceptible to the effects of moisture & temperature change.

It's simple...
Beautiful look. Beautiful quality. Beautiful price.

  • Q:

How is this floor laid in a reverse position? We will be going down a hall and then have bedrooms on both sides. Is there a way to reverse the direction you are laying?
    Asked on 5/18/2013 by Stefanie

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Yes. Splines are used to reverse the direction of your tongue and groove flooring such as installing rooms off a hallway or center-out installations. These can be found at your local Lumber Liquidators or any homecenter.

For secure holding, both glue and nail this spline into the back side of the exposed groove, now the floor can be worked in both directions. An excellent glue for spline work is from the Franklin Co. (Tite Bond 2) or any quality low-water carpenters wood glue.

  • Q:

Do these floors have a polyurethane coating on them? If not, what type of coating? I see different cleaning instruction online for floors with polurethane versus the wax coatings. Thank you. The floors are beautiful.
Asked on 4/10/2013 by Sue from Naperville, IL

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Yes this has a polyurethane coating on it.
We can only recommend our Bellawood Floor Cleaner, or cleaners that are safe for water based urethane finishes. Never use any polish, wax, oil soaps or cleaners that add shine to the floor. In addition, we do not recommend using steamers or wet-jet cleaning systems for hardwood because spraying can collect moisture in between board edges. The use of these products is at your own risk.
      Thank you for your inquiry.

what is the length of each piece? I am looking for flooring that is 6 to 8' long. Any suggestions?
Asked on 3/13/2013 by Fran from TX

      A:

Other than our unfinished pine flooring and our 6' bamboo, products come in random lengths 1' to 7'.

  • Q:

Do you need to allow this floor time to acclimate to the environment before installing and if so how much time is appropriate?
Asked on 3/12/2013 by Dixie from Albuquerque

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

All wood products are affected by environmental conditions, especially prefinished materials.
To control wood movement- expansion or shrinkage- it is recommended to acclimate the new flooring in the areas to be installed, not in (garages, U-Haul trailers, sheds, or tents) to normal lived-in conditions while in the boxes. If the products are protected in plastic then open the ends of the boxes. Length of time is not the determining factor. The goal of acclimation is for the core of the product to reach an equilibrium or moisture balance of the new flooring with its surroundings before installation or fastening. This balance could be achieved in as little as 1 to 5 days, or longer for some dense or oily exotic species.

      Avoid shocking the floor.
Just like you, wood actually performs best with consistent indoor temperatures of 60°-80° F and indoor humidity levels of 30% - 50%. Very dry or humid regions of the country usually require extended conditioning. Maintaining the recommended acclimation levels even after the installation should be viewed as ongoing floor care. Your doing so will help to minimize board movement, excessive squeaks, finish cracking and gaps.

Hygrometers sold in most Target and Wal-Mart stores ($10-$45) can be used to easily identify the need to regulate the humidity or air moisture.
In addition, to prevent board warping or bowing, do not cut the plastic support bindings on the outside of the packaging until ready to install. Store products flat, in a dry place. Provide air flow under and around cartons. Do not store directly on bare concrete or next to outside walls. Cartons should be placed as close to the center of the installation area as possible.

Proper jobsite conditions, acclimation and moisture testing of the subfloor along with the new flooring all works together for the success of the installation and is the responsibility of those overseeing the project.

  • Q:

My wife and I are considering this flooring for our kitchen, dining room, main entryway and hallway in our new construction home. My question is about durability...we have 2 boys (ages 5 and 2). How will this flooring hold up under normal wear and tear of two young children?
Asked on 11/2/2012 by Mike from Sioux Falls SD

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.
I would recommend a harder species than this birch engineered product for your application.
