These floors are wonderful! We installed over 600 sq feet and only had three pieces that were not usable. Fantastic quality, still amazed whenever we walk in our front door. What a statement!

This was a great product. it is a little hard to get used to but once you do it goes quickly. the wife and i did the whole house in about a month working on it on the weekends 3500 sq ft. hickory is a bit hard to accept stain would reccomend a good gel stain but i used minwax stain and finished it with verathane semi gloss. i love it and by the way hickory is HARD.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" Hickory:
Hi all
I ordered 5000 square feet of this, and finished just over 4000 - the rest is for the barbecue smoker and the log fire. The floor is beautiful. If you want a unique character floor then unfinished utility or ranch grade hickory is the way to go. Please note you will have a lot of firewood for the winter. A high percentage is mismilled and there are lots of splits in the utility grade.
I finished the floor with a colonial american half strength stain. Given the amount of labour - you will NOT save money on this product. If you want a unique and beautiful utility floor full of character, and you are prepared to remill several pieces with the table saw - this is a beautiful product.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" Hickory:
I installed quite a bit of the natural Hickory through-out my bedroom, closets, living-room and stairs. I am happy with the choice. There are a lot of nice character marks in the wood. I didn't want a perfectly clear floor (I think those floors start to look like Pergo when they have no imperfections). In fact, I would have been ok with even more character marks. I prefer the sand/finish flooring for the smooth finished product. Pre-finished flooring tends to have "micro-edges" between boards which make it harder to clean. Also, pre-finished boards sometimes aren't perfectly milled to meet the next butt-end, causing small "butt-end" lips.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3-1/4" Hickory:
I could not use 25% of the pieces that I purchased. They are in too poor condition to be sanded or planed down to use. That said the pieces that I did use look good and I am happy with them.

Q:
How are the widths measured? On a board 3-1/4" like this, what is the face width? Is it 3" of flat surface width plus 1/4" to 3/8" of tongue? Can you measure a piece of 3/4 x 3-1/4" flooring? I want it for something other than flooring and need to rip/saw the tongue off and maybe the groove too, and need to know actual widths to determine what dimensions I will end up with. Thanks.1 answer

What does it mean, "square edge?" I didn't notice it mentioned for other flooring you sell. I'm actually looking for something without a tongue & groove if I can find it here.1 answer
CUSTOMER CARE
A:
This is an unfinished tongue and groove floor. Only prefinished floors have a micro-bevel.Q:
What subfloor is needed? Can this be placed over particle board or on a below-grade cement floor?1 answer
A:
Minimum 5/8" plywood. This solid 3/4" product is not recommended to be nailed over particle board (no holding power) and the only way to install this in a below grade application is to use our Elastilon underlayment.Q:

A:

Will Hickory stand up to my mastif. How does it rate to scratching from the dogs nails as they run across the floor? What type of wood would you recommend for dog owners?1 answer
A:
Hickory is very hard with a 1820 rating on the Janka hardness scale. This is an unfinished product so you want to consult with a finish manufacture to get the most durable finish for the flooring. To help prevent scratches to the finish try to keep your pets claws trimmed or covered with vinyl claw covers. This wood would be a good choice for a dog owner because it is hard, and the light color will show less scratches.
