About Morning Star Bamboo:
By harvesting only "old growth" bamboo, we are able to provide flooring with increased hardness, so it will better withstand the rigors of everyday life in your home. Our factory-applied SEVEN-LAYER TOP COAT FINISH includes two layers of tough, SCRATCH-RESISTANT aluminum oxide.

About Bamboo:
Bamboo floors' popularity has increased over the past few years as people have become more aware of the fragile state of the environment.
Because it is a grass rather than a wood, it grows far more quickly than a tree. The plant's extensive root system continually grows underground and it replenishes itself naturally, as grass does.
New growth, which springs out of the ground and can mature up to 24" in  24 hours and unlike trees, bamboo will regenerate quickly, making it a renewable resource.

Carbonized Bamboo: Steamed bamboo, caramelizing the sugar within, to change its color.

Did you know?
An estimated 60-70 million Americans are affected by house dust, which can cause itchy eyes, sneezing, rashes, breathing difficulty and sinus trouble because of trapped pollens and molds in carpets, upholstery and curtains.
Not even frequent vacuuming will eliminate those microscopic troublemakers.

Another good reason to go green with Morning Star Bamboo!

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Horiz. Carbonized Bamboo:

After using this flooring in another project, I recently had it installed in my game room. The floor is beautiful and easy to clean. I was thrilled to get rid of my old industrial grade carpeting. Right now, I have work-out equipment in the room and have had the added expense of buying rubber mats to protect against dings from hand weights, but I know from previous uses that the floor will hold up. The room looks so much better.

        Service and delivery comments:

I had to deal with two stores here in Maine, and the staff in each location was helpful and very patient, helping me get my order together.

Installed on furring strips on 70 year old plaster ceiling that was cracking and flaking, though otherwise sound.
            Used 6 penny finish nails.
            Looks great.

            Service and delivery comments:

Though I'm very happy with the product, the local store is a nightmare. This was my third purchase experience over the last two years. Each time, the store stated an inventory amount well above what I needed, but when I arrived to make purchase, they had little or none of what was ordered, and many boxes were torn and taped together. First order: filled short by 2 boxes and included open carton that was 3 pieces short, and other cartons damaged, or taped to repair torn packaging. Returned the 3 short carton.
Store did order balance and arrived within a couple of days.
Next order, for same style material and stock number later in year for different project, inventory stated 420 sq. ft. available. At loading dock, only one carton could be found... and that turned out to be the 3 short carton I had returned before. Order filler stated he would order balance and store would call when in. Also, sales staff failed to mention that the original "vertical strand" was now only available as "horizontal"... so the appearance is quite different. Balance order didn't happen!! Waited 5 days and called to find order not placed. Balance arrived 2 days later.
ADVICE: CHECK YOUR ORDER AT THE LOADING DOCK FOR CORRECTNESS.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Horiz. Carbonized Bamboo:

I installed about 1000 sq ft of the 5/8" horizontal carbonized. It does look very good--I get positive comments from all who see it. Each plank is 3 3/4" wide by 3' long. I installed it over concrete, using 7/8" dri-core panels as a subfloor, with a number of panels (about every other panel) tap-con screwed to the concrete. Installation of the flooring was very smooth. Planks were consistently milled, with only a few planks that were not. I had surprisingly little waste. I used an 18g nailer purchased from Lumber Liquidators to install .

There is pretty significant variation in color of the planks. Planks in a single box can vary from a medium to dark brown, with some boxes containing a significant amount of planks that were a yellow color. I suspect about 10% of the boxes actually contained natural bamboo mis-labeled as carbonized. I received one box of vertical bamboo mislabeled as horitontal. So a word to the wise: if you don't want pretty significant variation in color, look for something else.

The only real problems I had with the flooring: softness and brittleness. You'd think those two properties are incompatible, but they aren't. I would say the horizontal bamboo is about as soft as pine. So it will be very easy to dent. I knew that when I purchased, so it isn't a problem for me. I figure it will just have some "character" sooner. In terms of brittleness, it is very easy to split the tongue when nailing it down. It doesn't seem to be a problem when you install, but if you have any "give" in your subfloor (like I do with some of my dri-core panels), you'll hear a cracking sound when you walk on it. The biggest problem with a split tongue is that the only way to fix it is to catch it when you install, and remove the plank. But removing the plank will almost certainly split the tongue of at least one of the adjoining planks. So you're stuck.

Overall, I'm happy with the floor. It looks good, it was easy to install because it was consistently milled, and the finish is pretty good. If you're willing to live with the softness and the brittleness, you'll get a good looking floor for less than the price of carpet.

It looks good but I wonder if the boards are all cut the same. I take pride in good lines but the boards dont seem to be cut so when put together they leave gaps.

Installed in bedrooms and hallway. Matched the oak flooring on stairs well. Be sure to look at the flooring before installing as color variations occur (sometimes 4 shades). I had to bring back some boxes, but LL was great at finding me boxes of compatible shades.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Horiz. Carbonized Bamboo:

Just wanted to add to an initial review I made after the first room I installed the flooring in. The first install was in a master bedroom and walk in closet in November 2007. Subsequent to that installation the bamboo flooring has been installed in the upstairs hallway and 3 additional bedrooms and another large walk in closet. My entire upstairs is now bamboo flooring. I found this easy to install and durable. If you follow the recommendations of letting the floor age and moving the furniture to prevent dents and dings I think you'll find that the flooring is extremely durable. Sure it will scratch. I moved a computer on its side and put a small scratch in the flooring but that would happen to any wood floor. We walk on it in bare feet and with shoes on and if there are a dozen scratches total that's a lot. When the upstairs was finished I also had 2 of my 3 children still living with us so there was quite a bit of traffic upstairs so I am pleased with the durability. I'm now deciding between bamboo or some other type of flooring for my living and dining rooms. Love the floor and I found it pretty easy to install. And if you're not sure about something as the guys in the store. They answered every question I had and were right on with their answers.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Horiz. Carbonized Bamboo:

Installed in an entry, hallway, kitchen, and breakfast room. Was affordable and beautiful, BUT..... Scratches and dents VERY easily; definitely not harder than oak. Not kid or pet friendly. Dogs' nails will scratch even if kept trimmed. Now, six years later, we are trying to decide if we have to replace the floor, or try to have it professionally refinished. Some say that bamboo can be refinished, others say it can't since it's actually a grass, and won't stand up to sanding. We may try the sandless refinishing.

                    A:

If needed, bamboo flooring can be fully re-sanded and finished about three times as any other species

A typical floor sanding involves using a special (drum) floor sander, edger, and a buffer/ polisher with a disc attachment for holding sand paper and buffing pads. The sanding procedure starts with a course of medium grit sand paper. After sanding the entire floor, repeat with a medium grit and complete sanding with a fine grit sand paper. This produces a fine surface and is ready for finishing.

However, because bamboo is a grass it tends to get “fuzzy”, “burns” or heats-up faster during sanding. Using a medium grit paper, approach sanding at a slight angle to the grain direction then graduating down to fine course, similar to sanding soft yellow Pine.

In most cases, a full sanding is usually not required, just a “buff & re-coat” or “screening & re-coating”. Buff & re-coat is light sanding using an industrial type buffer that removes surface scratches, cleans, and prepares the floor for new top finishes. This procedure really depends how the floor was used or abused. In general, high traffic areas; kitchen-dinette would need to be re-coated sooner than a bedroom or formal dining room. If your floors have been treated with any “non-hardwood friendly products” such as; waxes or has heavy wear patterns, or has lots of dents, then it would need to be fully refinished (Sand & Finish).

The techniques of sanding and finishing bamboo do require higher skills and are best left to professionals.

Can you put this felt like underlayment under the nail down bamboo? I am a professional installer and have always used 15 lb. felt paper like a roofing paper as a vapor barrier. The underlayment the customer was sold looks like a laminate pad. Can this be used in a nail down install?

Carbonized or caramelizing is not a top stain but a manufacturing process of actually steaming or boiling bamboo in a giant bath heating up the sugars. The starch turns a darker richer color that permeates the entire board throughout.

For Bamboo our Morning Star and Bellawood brand has a superior finish and offers the hardest type of bamboo floor produced, "Strand Bamboo". It can be refinished too but only by professionals with bamboo experience as it's a grass product and more difficult than hardwood. Stranded would be my only choice if going with bamboo.

I have a Bellawood hickory floor that holds up extremely well to our Hound Mix, Pit-Boxer, and another young mutt and a cat. Not to mention nieces, nephews, and work shoes. Excellent finish. Harder floors like hickory (41% harder than Red Oak) or exotic floors will dent less easily. 3/4" hardwood can also be refinished several times. Light colors will hide potential scratches. Remember nothing is scratch proof but some do better than others.

Our higher warranty Laminate flooring holds up very well to dog nails and wear but cannot be refinished. Advantage is it's less expensive both for product and labor. Higher Warranty the better.

Our Schon engineered flooring has 7 coats of Treffert or Klumpp (made in Germany) highly resistant polyurethane finish with aluminum oxide anti-scratch and a 55% gloss. Being a natural material it may dent easier than laminate but it's real wood. Engineered can be refinished carefully once or twice.

Resilient Vinyl flooring is a very tough floor and the most resistant against damp areas.

Regardless of the floor you choose, keeping nails trimmed is a good idea. Another idea is to cover nails with vinyl claw covers.

Proper care always helps. For general cleaning a swiffer type system works best. Not one that sprays the floor however. Lightly damp is fine but never soak or flood mop your floor. Have a no shoes policy as much as possible. Use felt pads on all furniture. Sweep often. Urine, when cleaned up quick isn't an issue but if left to dry it can burn finish.

Bellawood Cleaner works very well, find it here - http://www.lumberliquidators.com/catalog/section.jsp?categoryId=19

While FSC Certification is gaining in popularity, it is only one of many initiatives designed to promote ethical forest management/conservation. True FSC Certification requires supervision or custodial of product from seed to manufacture which some of our vendors participate in.

                    A:

No. Climate control is required for any pre-finished flooring. Urethane finish can't handle the dimensional changes that take place with extreme environmental shifts, HOWEVER you can use an unfinished hardwood (preferably quarter/rift sawn) finished with tung or other natural oils as with covered porch flooring. These site finished penetrating sealers expand and contract with the flooring without cracking.
