About Morning Star Bamboo:
By harvesting only "old growth" bamboo, we are able to provide flooring with increased hardness, so it will better withstand the rigors of everyday life in your home. Our factory-applied SEVEN-LAYER TOP COAT FINISH includes two layers of tough, SCRATCH-RESISTANT aluminum oxide.

About Bamboo:
Bamboo floors' popularity has increased over the past few years as people have become more aware of the fragile state of the environment.
Because it is a grass rather than a wood, it grows far more quickly than a tree. The plant's extensive root system continually grows underground and it replenishes itself naturally, as grass does.
New growth, which springs out of the ground and can mature up to 24" in  24 hours and unlike trees, bamboo will regenerate quickly, making it a renewable resource.

Carbonized Bamboo: Steamed bamboo, caramelizing the sugar within, to change its color.

Did you know?
An estimated 60-70 million Americans are affected by house dust, which can cause itchy eyes, sneezing, rashes, breathing difficulty and sinus trouble because of trapped pollens and molds in carpets, upholstery and curtains.
Not even frequent vacuuming will eliminate those microscopic troublemakers.

Another good reason to go green with Morning Star Bamboo!

  • Q:

How does the material hold up against a dogs claws. Will it scratch up the finish. Also against accidents.
    Asked on 2/16/2014 by Jim

      A:

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.

  • Q:

Is this product ok to use for a kitchen?
Asked on 2/8/2014 by Mrsevil from Clinton, il

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Hardwood, laminate (higher warranty laminate is better in high traffic areas like kitchens), cork, and bamboo is acceptable for installation in a kitchen, but we highly recommend you put a throw rug by the sink because an excess of water can damage any floor. These floorings are water resistant relative to normal spills but not water-proof. Any soaking spills will destroy any flooring with the exception of ceramic or stone tile. Thank you for your inquiry.

  • Q:

Can bamboo flooring be used in a bathroom?
    Asked on 1/10/2014 by Burly

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Due to the excessive moisture present in a full bath we cannot recommend any of our solid natural flooring or laminate products for this application, I would suggest one of our vinyl Tranquility products. We have a 2mm peel and stick and now a 4 and 5mm click together products that can go in full bath areas or where moisture is a concern. Thank you for your inquiry.

  • Q:

Can this floor be used on a three season enclosed porch that is above grade and well ventilated underneath? Temperature here can go to 10 below zero F in the winter.
Asked on 11/30/2013 by twon from Plattsburg, NY

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

No. This as well as solid, engineered, cork, laminate, and even vinyl flooring require climate control.

Urethane finish can't handle the dimensional changes that take place with extreme environmental shifts, HOWEVER you can use an unfinished hardwood (preferably quarter/rift sawn) finished with tung or other natural oils as with covered porch flooring. These site finished penetrating sealers expand and contract with the flooring without cracking.

  • Q:

How scratch resistent is the flooring?
Asked on 11/17/2013 by Kathy from IL

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

This is finished with 7 coats of Treffert or Klumpp (made in Germany) highly resistant polyurethane finish with aluminum oxide anti-scratch and a 55% gloss. It is scratch resistant but not scratch-proof. As with any wood furniture these floors can scratch so proper care and protection is necessary. Strand Bamboo is harder and can dent less.

Care: For general cleaning a swiffer type system works best. Not one that sprays the floor however. Lightly damp is fine but never soak or flood mop your floor. Do not use steam mops. Have a no shoes policy as much as possible. Use felt pads on all furniture. Throw rugs with hardwood flooring acceptable backing are useful in high traffic areas like entrances. Sweep often.

Bellawood Cleaner works well (use as directed), find here - ttp://www.lumberliquidators.com/ll/s/flooring-molding-tools-accessories/floor-care-products

In addition, Bona Kemi makes a decent hardwood flooring cleaner.

Do not use oil-type cleaner or wax of any kind.

  • Q:

If the bamboo is tongue and groove why do I have to glue or nail? If I have to glue can I glue to pad for ease of repair if necessary?
I was thinking if I didn't glue I could remove nearest sidewall piece and disassemble to the damage, change out piece and reassemble.

  • Q:

My bamboo floor arrived and while I like the color, I wish it were darker. We got a great deal, so I don't want to return or exchange it. Is there any easy way to darken the shade a little with an over the counter hardwood stain or cleaner?
Asked on 9/24/2013 by abbie from granville, oh

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Unfortunately there is not an easy way to darken the shade you would need to sand down and refinish the flooring once installed.

Bamboo flooring can be fully re-sanded and finished as any other species

Typically floor sanding involves using a special (drum) floor sander, edger, and a buffer/ polisher with a disc attachment for holding sand paper and buffing pads. The sanding procedure starts with a course to medium grit sand paper. After sanding the entire floor, repeat with a medium grit and complete sanding with a fine grit sand paper. This produces a fine surface and is ready for finishing. Be aware that because bamoo is a grass it tends to get “fuzzy”, the surface burns or heats-up faster than wood during sanding. Approach the sanding at a slight angle to the grain direction then graduating down to fine course. The method is similar to sanding soft yellow Pine.

Note that in most cases a full sanding is usually not required, just a “buff & re-coat” or “screening & re-coating” may be all that needed to re-freshen a floor. This method of light sanding employs an industrial type orbital buffer fitted with a nylon pad and screen that removes surface scratches, cleans, and prepares the floor for new top finishes. Using this procedure really depends how the floor was used or abused. In general, high traffic areas; kitchen-dinette would need to be re-coated sooner than a bedroom or formal dining room. If your floors have been treated with any “non-hardwood friendly products” such as; waxes, oils, heavy wear patterns or has lots of dents, then it would need to be fully refinished.

The techniques of sanding and finishing bamboo do require higher skills and best left to professionals.

My kitchen / dining room floor has a 3/4" treated plywood sub floor on joists 16" centers with 30# felt layer and 1/2" Hardi Backer. There was ceramic tile and I am wanting to replace with Morning Star 3/8" x 3-15/16" Horizontal Carbonized Bamboo flooring. The house is above grade, wood frame construction.
Do I need to install plywood over the Hardi backer, remove it and add plywood or what? Also can I install this product under cabinets?
