Comments about Builder's Pride 3/4" x 2-1/4" Maple:
This floor went in well although the smaller width makes the job much longer as there are more courses to lay. Most boards were well cut, but the were some milling/QC errors that caused me a headache. Some boards were different widths by a small amount and when the next course was laid across them, small diagonal gaps opened up the couldn't be pulled or pounded shut. Fixing meant ripping up the previous coarse, wasting time and board-feet. Laying subsequent boards meant checking the width as well as length for fit and added another decision for each board which added anther step to the flow and delayed the finish. If you are careful about cutting, you can get away with a 5% overage and not 10-20% as LL recommended to me when I picked it up. I hope that I can return the 2 un-opened bundles without the 20% restocking fee on my 440 sqft job that I was talked into getting 500 sqft for. That said, there were some significant boards to discard that should have never made it past QC. Warped (boomarang), and twisted boards can't can't be pulled down or in as easily as the bowed ones. There were many boards with manufacturing/machinery scars (not natural blemishes like knot grain hollows) in them that should not have been included. I cut most of these out and used the boards on the ends or hid them in the closet, but still... Premium quality and high price point should have prevented this. Hardness was also not up to expectations. My 80 pound dog EASILY scratches this floor and didn't on in my last house with similar prefinished floors. I expected some scratching, but these floors are quite soft. Perhaps not as many coats of poly = cheaper price?... Premade transitions were pretty bulky and you can save yourself the expense by ripping the tongue and bottom off, setting an angle on one of the floor boards. Match the back up with a 90 degree cut and it looks much better than their clunky transition. This only works for matching to a lower height unless you put a small bead on the leading edge, but i didn't need to do this.

Comments about Builder's Pride 3/4" x 2-1/4" Maple:
I was delighted to find the flooring I had chosen on sale when I returned to the store to place the actual order. We upgraded from Maple Select to Maple Natural and it was still less per sq. foot. The entire floor has not yet been laid, but what is down looks very good. There is more variation in the color in the actual floor box than on the sample in the store, so I am especially pleased that we were able to upgrade. I reduced the score by one star to account for this discrepancy [...]

I have a home at the New Jersey shore, so sand is a perpetual issue and I have two dogs, who rarely have their nails trimmed (I'm lazy). Would this be a good product given these two issues?1 answer
A:
Maple may not be the best choice for this application. I would recommend a harder species such as Hickory.
