Maple floors are exceptionally beautiful, fine-textured, tough and dent resistant. The heartwood has creamy white color tones to light reddish brown, and sapwood is a pale creamy white.
Because of Maple's unique characteristics and durability, it has been the flooring choice for high traffic spaces such as bowling alleys, basketball courts, dance floors, and schools just to name a few.
Imagine how well it performs in kitchens, dining rooms, and kid's bedrooms!
Maple will offer you great durability, beauty, and will get your neighbors talking.

What is "Rustic Grade"?
Rustic Grade has larger tight knots and the most color variation. Also referred to as #2 or Third grade. It is the perfect choice when character marks and contrasting appearance is desired.

Please note unfinished flooring sold in open, strapped bundles and not sold in boxes.

      Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Maple Flooring:

Wanted an unfinished hardwood floor product with good color variation and would be very flat and seamless. Right choice. Only issue I had was when I had to turn the tounge direction the other way to nail. I ripped a maple tounge and placed it between two grooves and the rest went in with no issues.

      Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Maple Flooring:

Wife and I were looking for an alternative to a butcher block counter top for a kitchen island. Did a little research and found that this material would make a great counter top, even though it's not going to look exactly traditional. Boards are wider than what would be typically used, unless you had routers and made your own tong and grove. But hands down the most economical lumber compared to anywhere else. Some sanding was needed because there was some variation in the boards; some of the boards had rough surfaces these I just cut around.

              Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Maple Flooring:

I used this product to build the top of my kitchen island and table. The color variation is beautiful and the hard maple is very durable. I put it on 3/4" plywood and it doesn't flex at all.
To seal it I used a btucher block oil. It is safe for food prep, looks amazing, and gives warmth to a tramsitional kitchen. It goes well with the Uba Tuba granite on the counters, and the Multi colored slate on the floors. Excellent product!!

I was remodeling two adjoining rooms in a house 150 years old. One was carpeted and the other had a dark stain. Pulled the carpet to find a coat if paint. Some if these boards were chipped, split or otherwise damaged. I replaced a third of the room with this rustic maple flooring. It had just enough of the heart wood I need to match up perfectly. I used an oil finish to bring out the richness in the wood.

Going to re-install nearly 100 year old IXL 2.25 x 3/4" reclaimed rock maple flooring removed during our cottage renovation. Need more material. Old flooring will be sanded to clean up. Is this flooring tongue and groove? We need about 150 more sq. ft. to finish the project. Thanks.

Flooring Grade waterbased urethane can be used for hardwood flooring. Oil based floor finishes and natural penetrating oils like Waterlox are available also. Waterlox is a good natural penetrating sealer you could consider that can be more forgiving to apply and reapply. .

I recently purchased the Case Decolor maple hardwood. The floor scratches very easily. I am disappointed and decided to not use it for the kitchen. Can you please tell me if this hardwood is any different from the Casa Decolor? Thank you.

                      • Staff Reviewer

                        A:

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.
Why doesn't the warranty cover scratches and dents?
Scratches and dents are not covered because individual use can vary. Also, most manufacturers do not guard against wear conditions driven by consumer use of a product, including flooring products. Scratches and dents are beyond a manufacturer's ability to control.
                        Thanks for writing in.

                        A:

Full sanding is required for this unfinished flooring and is recommended to be done by a professional sand and finish expert.
SANDING: Extra care must be taken during sanding and finishing, as sanding marks and finish lines are more obvious due to maple’s density and light color.
The species also burnishes, dulling fine paper and screens and making it difficult to cut out previous scratches.
                        Suggested Sanding Sequence:
First Cut: 50 at a 7 to 15 degree angle to the grain
Second Cut: 80 straight with the grain
                        Third Cut: 120
                        Hard Plate: 100 or 120
                        First Screen: 100
                        Second Screen: 100
FINISHING: Takes neutral finish well. May be difficult
                        to stain.

A square edge (which is how unfinished flooring is sold) means that there is no beveling on the edges such as the way prefinished flooring is made.

                        A:

Rustic grade is not recommended for a large job like a gymnasium, too much waste. Select or natural grades will work, select being the best. For large installations you need additional expansion gaps besides around the perimeter. Search "Do I need expansion joints in the center of my hardwood installation" here for details - http://www.lumberliquidators.com/custserv/aboutus.jsp?pageName=Flooring101
Then Search "R. L. " for installation instructions.

I would like to use for a basketball floor over reasonably level concrete floor. Should I put down 1x6 pine sleepers fastened to the concrete and then nail the new maple to the sleepers? Or what is your recommendation? Total finish height cannot exceed 1 and a quarter inches.

                        A:

I would suggest a floating plywood system with a layer of 6 mm cork underlayment under the plywood. First the concrete would be covered with 6 mil poly sheeting as a moisture barrier. Next, 6 mm cork underlayment would be installed by butting the seams and taping them together. Next, a layer of 1/2" plywood would go over the cork. Another layer of 1/2" plywood will be installed at a 45 degree angle to the first layer and screwed together. Last #15 felt paper will be installed over the plywood, and then the flooring is installed using 1 1/2" cleat nails.
