Virginia Mill Works Co.- 1/2" x 5" Midnight Birch- Prefinished Handscraped Engineered Flooring- 30 Year Warranty

Length: 1-4' (400mm-1200mm)

Colonial American homes were built with wooden floors that were sawn using basic hand-held tools. The hand-crafted workmanship that went into those floors can be found in Virginia Mill Works handscraped floors.

Quick Highlights:
- Superior Strength and Stability
- Handscraped Engineered
- Nail, Glue or Float Installation
- Backed with a 30 Year Warranty

About Handscraped Flooring:
Handscraped or distressed hardwood floors have a natural worn appearance. They look like floors from the days when floors were finished by hand.

About Engineered:
Hardwood veneer layers are stacked on one another, with the grain of the adjacent layers oriented perpendicular to each other.
Because wood expands and contracts in the direction of the grain, one layer stabilizes the next, resulting in a product that is less susceptible to the effects of moisture & temperature change.

Did you know?
An estimated 60-70 million Americans are affected by house dust, which can cause itchy eyes, sneezing, rashes, breathing difficulty and sinus trouble because of trapped pollens and molds in carpets, upholstery and curtains.
Not even frequent vacuuming will eliminate those microscopic troublemakers.

  • Q:

Is this floor good to use in high traffic areas such as kitchen and living room? Will spilled water damage it as I have read about on some of the laminate floors?
Asked on 10/15/2013 by JR from Ben Wheeler, TX

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.
      Thank you for your inquiry.

  • Q:

I had this installed through a major portion of our home, in high-traffic areas. I don't like how the extreme darkenss shows scratches and dulling so much. I am considering refinishing to a medium dark (dark-walnut) type finish. Is there a link that you can share, or manufacturer suggested methods to refinishing? Please help.
Asked on 1/27/2013 by Michael from Oklahoma

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Full refinishing will take slightly under a 1/32” off the veneer of the wood flooring. The thickness of the veneer and how much wear and dents a floor has will determine how many times it can be refinished.
Engineered flooring with a 1/8” wear layer or more will be able to be refinished at least once. If the engineered product has a 1/16” wear layer a professional sander may be able to refinish it, but many won’t take the chance in case they make a mistake and take too much off the wear layer. We recommend that hardwood floor refinishing be done by a professional and if your not sure if you can refinish your flooring have professional sand and finish expert come to your home and evaluate your flooring. Thank you for your inquiry.

  • Q:

Will this flooring work over radiant heat "radiant water heat"?
Asked on 10/27/2012 by David from David

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

RADIANT HEAT SYSTEMS (all installation methods)\nGeneral Precautions and Recommendations Always use moisture barriers.\nVIRGINIA MILL WORKS engineered flooring can be successfully applied over in-floor radiant heat. Know the species you intend to use and how it may interact with radiant heat. Not all species are recommended for this installation, choose species highest in stability ratings for this application. Brazilian Cherry is not recommended.\nBecause of the wide array of systems on the market, each with its own features, please consult with your radiant flooring provider for recommended installation methods. Hydronic systems must include in-floor temperature sensors and an outdoor thermostat that allows the system to adjust the water temperature according to anticipated heat loss. Radiant heat contributes to the drying out of all woods. Use of a humidification system may be required to maintain the proper humidity level. The indoor relative humidity must be maintained between 35-55% year round. Failure to do so can result in edge cupping, squeaking delamination, splintering, or face checking.\nAvoid shock to the floor, Before installation, run new systems to dissipate hidden or trapped moisture. During installation, reduce thermostat to 65°F. 48 hours after installation, slowly raise the temperature of the heating system to its preferred operating level over a period of 5 days. The surface temperature of the subfloor must never exceed 85°F in any location. The temperature setting must always remain within 15°F of normal operating level, and should never be turned completely off. Excessive heat, rapid heating, and\/or failure to maintain humidity levels between 35% and 55% is likely to result in cracking, cupping, squeaking and other forms of floor issues. Slight surface splits (checking), particularly at the ends of planks, should be expected with installations over radiant heat and does not constitute a product failure.\nTest for moisture, This procedure must be followed regardless of the time of year.\nPrior to installation over radiant heat, moisture testing must be conducted and documented. The moisture content for concrete substrates must not exceed 3.0 lbs. per 1000 square feet in 24 hrs per ASTM 1669-89 (Calcium Chloride Test). Wood subfloors should not exceed 12% using a pin type meter. Do not install the flooring until excess moisture is corrected.\nRADIANT INSTALLATIONS Related information can be found on our website “Flooring 101”\n(1) When edge-gluing together planks over radiant heat, two separate continuous beads of glue should be applied: one continuous bead applied inside the groove and one continuous bead applied to the top part of the tongue and at all seams to ensure a secure bond with the top and bottom of the tongue. This double-gluing helps to minimize board gaps or separation. Humidity related gapping should be expected and does not constitute a product failure.\n(2) When nailing planks over radiant heat ensure that fasteners are holding the flooring without damage to the radiant system.\n(3) When fully gluing planks over radiant heat ensure that the adhesives are recommended for this application.

This is a good option for pets with the textured finish is will disguise any scratches that may happen. This floor has an exceptional finish so while scratching may happen it is not likely but is not something that we can always prevent
