Builder's Pride- 3/4" x 2-1/4" Natural Hickory Prefinished Solid Flooring- 25 Year Warranty

In addition to being the hardest of the North American flooring choices, Hickory is also a beautiful option for home or business owners seeking a room with dramatic appeal.
This hardwood displays a breath taking variety of brown tones and dramatic grain patterns that make it just as appropriate in a contemporary high rise loft as it is in a log cabin.
In Eastern North America, it survived the catastrophic changes of the Glacial Epoch, some 50 million years ago. Thus, it is the first strictly American hardwood species. Westward trekking pioneers made hickory a prerequisite for their wagon wheels.  The same durability and strength that made hickory the choice for axe handles and other tools in the past now make it an excellent choice for high traffic areas.

What is "Natural Grade"?
Natural Grade flooring contains distinct variations in coloration and varying wood characters.
It will also have a slightly longer average plank length compared to Rustic grade products but shorter length than our select grade product.

We did the whole house with it (~1000 sq. ft.). It went in pretty easy (my friend and I were first-timers with flooring) , took awhile though, a couple months of Sundays I guess. Everybody comments on it when they walk in the house. The reaction is almost always the same: They look down and say "Whoa, nice floor. You did this yourself?"

I have to say, wood floor that's all the same color looks boring and drab after you're in a room with this hickory. I was nervous after the first 2 or so rows, thinking it would look bad, but you need at least several rows to see how it all comes together.

There was a slight variation with the 2-1/4" width, some were narrower than others. It was enough so that when we put the next row in you's see a gap if any of the previous row were narrower. We quickly learned to weed the narrower ones out and use them together. There was very little waste overall. I was going to buy 10% extra to account for scrap because that's what I've read you should do. The guy at the Lumber Liquidators counter told me not to, he said that 5% extra would be more than enough even if it was our first time installing, and he was right - I still have some extra. The money he saved me paid for the cheaper Norge hammer they sell, which did the whole house with no problem.

We haven't moved in yet, so I can't speak about wear. But I have put a small scratch and dent here and there by dropping things on it. They hide well, it seems only the person that put them there knows they are there.

Overall I love it, would buy it again, and other floors look boring after being in a room with this.

*edit* - Looks like they only allow 2 pictures. Too bad, I'd like to show off every room. We went into the kitchen and closets too.

                  Cons

                    Best Uses

This wood is beautiful, with the 2 1/4" width and color variations it makes for a stunning floor. If you're installing yourself set aside about twice the time you normally would - when your boards are half the normal width you have twice the nailing, cutting, etc. Also with the color variations and length variations there is a bit of planning needed to stagger joints and not have light and dark spots in your colors throughout the floor.

In response to some of the other reviews - yes there are slight variations in the millwork, and that's part of the charm of having a true 3/4 solid hardwood floor. No solid hardwood floors are perfect. If you want a mirror smooth floor, buy laminate or engineered. Any 'installer' that complains about this millwork (for under $3.00 a sq/ft) should not be installing hardwood.

Another note - I put down ~700 sq/ft and only had about a box of waste when done (and ended up returning several boxes). Yes you read that right, I had about 20' of waste. With the skinny width and color variations, you can use boards that are 12" or under on the main floor and they just look like they belong.

All said, would not have done anything different - awesome product. And it even holds up to my Great Dane throwing bones around and running on it.

                      Looks nice, but...

The floor was installed by a pro and I will say that the floor looks very nice. Unfortunately, the installer had issues with the milling and how inconsistant the thickness of the wood was. There was significant waste because of that. I wish I could say that the price was "very good" but in this case replace the term "very good" with cheap. Wish we would have spent more on a different brand.

We are installing this floor as a remodling project.

                        Questions

                        1. Is it COMPLETELY refinished and ready for installation? I understand it to be "nail down" flooring? We do not have to sand, seal, etc???

                        2. You have a simple "glaze" over the natural wood? Nothing heavy?
                        ???

It is always a good idea to hang on to some of the extra material in case you need it for future repairs.

Is this product "pet" friendly - we have a Jack Russell Terrior
and I would like to know if this product is durable enough to
                        endure an active dog?

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factor that influence wear.

                      • Q:

Does this grade of flooring have unfilled deep knot holes? I have seen a couple different lines of flooring at other local stores, and some brands include boards with frequent knot holes - I would estimate at least 1/4" deep, while others either remove such boards or fill the holes so that the surface is smooth and easier to clean.

This is a natural grade product; Please see attached discription.
                          NATURAL and Better
ALTERNATE GRADE NAME(S): Also referred to as
                          First or Second Grade,
                          Millrun or #1 Common

SUMMARY: Natural Grade flooring contains distinct variations in coloration and varying wood characters. Natural grade flooring will have a slightly longer average plank length compared to Rustic grade products.

DETAILED: Specific characteristics of Natural grade flooring will vary widely by wood species; however, typically include such things as: minor imperfections in milling; imperfections in face-work which cannot be wholly removed by an ordinary method of sanding; slight variations in angle of end matching; varying wood characteristics such as spots, streaks, slightly open checks, and pin/worm holes; small splits, broken knots or knot holes; and shallow back. Natural grade pre-finished flooring will have a plank face that is free of most finishing imperfections; however, may contain a limited amount of minor blemishes including, but not limited to: light grainy surface/debris, bubbles, streaks, uncoated bevel, finish chipping, dents, or equivalent type characters. When assembled, Natural grade flooring should not exhibit gaps exceeding 0.031”or end/side over-wood(e.g. height variation between adjacent planks) exceeding 0.030”.

NOTE: This grade description is intended only to provide general characteristics of the identified wood grade, and is not all-inclusive. Specific wood characteristics and acceptance criteria may vary by wood species. A 5% allowance per box is established for pieces exhibiting one or more milling, grading, or finishing defects.
