Hardwood veneer layers are stacked in a laddered construction. Because wood expands and contracts in the direction of the grain, one layer stabilizes the next, resulting in a product that is less susceptible to the effects of moisture and temperature change.

  • Q:

Can this floor be refinished in the future?
Asked on 7/13/2015 by Monica from Davie, FL

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Full refinishing will take slightly under a 1/32" off the veneer of the wood flooring. The thickness of the veneer and how much wear and dents a floor has will determine how many times it can be refinished. Solid hardwood that is ¾" thick may be refinished 4 to 7 or more times depending on how much wood was taken off on each refinishing. Low profile solid wood flooring like 5/16" thick flooring may be able to be refinished twice if the flooring is in good shape. Engineered flooring with a 1/8" wear layer or more will be able to be refinished at least once. If the engineered product has a 1/16" wear layer a professional sander may be able to refinish it, but many won't take the chance in case they make a mistake and take too much off the wear layer. We recommend that hardwood floor refinishing be done by a professional and if your not sure if you can refinish your flooring have professional sand and finish expert come to your home and evaluate your flooring. Thank you for your inquiry.

  • Q:

Am looking at Schon Engineered Maple. The specs list the Janka hardness rating as N/A. Can I get some additional information
Asked on 3/9/2015 by Kevin from Clifton Park, NY

      A:

The Janka scale does not apply to engineered product.
Engineered Hardwoods and the Janka Scale.
The Janka scale chart is not to be considered an absolute; it is designed to help people understand which woods are harder than others.
The Janka Hardness test is done in accordance with ASTM D 1037-7 testing methods. Lumber stocks tested ranges from 1" to 2" thick. (Resulting Janka Hardness Numbers are an average.) It important to note that no testing is done on flooring (but is done on "solid" wood species).
The Janka hardness test measures the resistance of a type of wood to withstand denting and wear. It measures the force required to embed an 11.28 mm (0.444 in) steel ball into wood to half the ball's diameter. This method leaves an indentation. A common use of Janka hardness ratings is to determine whether a species of wood is suitable for use as flooring.
Other factors that affect how flooring performs: type of core for engineered flooring like: pine, hdf (high density fiber board) , poplar, oak, birch....etc.. When choosing an engineered floor (other than the species) consider grain direction and thickness floor or top wear surface of the product, engineered hardwoods with thicker wear layers (more actual hardwood) will offer more resistance to dinging than ones with much thinner wear layers. The hardness ratings should not be the only deciding factor when selecting any hardwood floor.
      Thank you for your inquiry.

Yes. However be aware that this is a tongue and groove floor therefore the floating method will require tongue and groove adhesive unlike Schon Quick Clic Flooring.
