Great product Overall but some minor quality issues

By Handyman Kyle

from Montrose, MI

Flooring installs great. Especially liked how many long boards there was. Out of the 20 boxes installed so far I did have 2 boxes that had boards that should have been rejected by the supplier's quality department. It also seemed in very well with our hardwood flooring that is 20 years old. I would have given 5 stars if it hadn't been the minor quality defects that bumped up my waste level of material.

Good product - Low waste percentages

Did 800 square foot project. Quality was better than expected with very little scrap or bad pieces. Lots of long pieces. See pics. Bought natural color and it has a good richness to it.

      Barely got what I needed

      By jayr

      from peninsula

The wood I purchased worked fine for what I needed. I had to go through the entire box to pull out about 10 pieces to do my project (a patch job) I'll have the rest for something else.

Many very short pieces and narrow milled pieces

      By 1000sqft remodel

      from Denver Colorado

The uneven quality of the milled pieces, plus many very short pieces resulted in much more waste than anticipated. Too many short pieces degraded the overall look of the finished job.

I put this on grade (slab) with an adhesive recommended by LL that would block moisture. It has been down for about 6 weeks without any problems. Looks great, too!

Is this flooring square-edge or beveled/microbeveled edge?

              A:

              It is beveled.
I would recommend visiting your local Lumber Liquidators to look at the actual sample (take home samples are free) or order a sample to make sure this is the right product for you.

          • Q:

In preparing a place to "acclimate" 37 boxes of Red-Oak 3/4x21/4" flooring. What is the size of the box which will be delivered. Obviously, each box weighing about 56 lbs, will be a lot for floor loading. Want to disperse the wt. over several areas. What is the maximum box size you ship, knowing that each box is about 56 lbs.? That will help me determine, strategically where to have the boxes delivered to avoid a massive amount of wt. in one room. Thanks

              Yes you can!
A professional sand and finish expert would have to make the determination on site on which sanding process will be needed or which can be done to restore the floors shine.

              A:

Unfortunately we source from several mills across the continent for the red oak to make this prefinished product and have no way to know whether it is Quercus rubra (Northern red oak) or Quercus falcata (Southern red oak) in any given manufacturing run.

I have existing red oak that was installed unfinished and then finished normally with 3 coats of poly. This floor has ambered in 3 years - will this product also amber in color over time?
Asked on 2/4/2014 by Ray from Syracuse, NY

            1 answer

            • Staff Reviewer

              A:

Wood products can be dramatic in appearance, especially the exotics. Only factory made products such as tile, vinyl, and wallpaper will have uniformity of color. Keep in mind that wood and corks are natural product and no two installed floors will be identical. Variations in appearance are completely normal and are a desired characteristic. As your floor ages, color or shading called “patina” can occur. This process can be rapid the first 3 months, less in 6 months, then finishing off in about I year. Moving the furniture and rugs around helps to even out areas that were not exposed to light. Try to avoid large area rugs for the first 3 months.

All wood species can change color over time due to oxidation or when exposed to light. In some species, the change can be more dramatic and may darken in color over time, while others tend to lighten. Currently there is no known value set for Patina or color change of a species so contractors and or customers should be aware of this normal condition. The patina process is unrelated to the urethane finishes.

            • Staff Reviewer

              A:

We can only recommend our Bellawood Floor Cleaner, or cleaners that are safe for water based urethane finishes. Never use any polish, wax, oil soaps or cleaners that add shine to the floor. In addition, we do not recommend using steamers or wet-jet cleaning systems for hardwood because spraying can collect moisture in between board edges. The use of these products is at your own risk.
