Many very short pieces and narrow milled pieces

        By 1000sqft remodel

        from Denver Colorado

        Pros

          Cons

            Best Uses

The uneven quality of the milled pieces, plus many very short pieces resulted in much more waste than anticipated. Too many short pieces degraded the overall look of the finished job.

I put this on grade (slab) with an adhesive recommended by LL that would block moisture. It has been down for about 6 weeks without any problems. Looks great, too!

My floor was recently installed and I love it. The planks are beautiful, and the quality is excellent. My installer did a great job. The floor was reasonably priced, I am so happy I chose to use wood on my kitchen floor instead of tile.

                                        • Narrow Expanses

Floor was laid in dining room and due to some wide variance in color was able to place the less desirable pieces into the areas to be covered with furniture, area rug, tables. At the end I had half a carton of unusable due to color or natural defects. I had anticipated some of this so I had increased my planned waste to 15 % and was ample. Rest of floor was well milled, and finish is great. For price and picking through to get best pieces very well worth the final result.

                                        • Extreme Color Outliers

                                        Best Uses

I installed this wood flooring in 3 bedrooms. The hallway leading into the bedrooms has existing, 25 year old flooring that I wanted to "match". By match I mean use the same size, species, knot frequency, and grain variation. Then have the old flooring refinished.

My existing flooring is much more yellow/orange from time, but I have sanded some spots to test and it matches quite well.

I chose this flooring because the "select" grade was too perfect and wouldn't have matched my existing. The problem is, this flooring had some extreme color variations resulting in pieces i refused to lay into the flooring. The rooms took 22 boxes, and I ended up with about 1.5 boxes of pieces that were significantly too dark or light and would have stuck out.

The color variation may be built into the price, and I'm ok with that.

Otherwise the flooring is excellent. The pieces snug up to one another very well. I did not notice ANY width variation that other reviewers have reported. I also had almost no instances of damaged pieces, tongues, etc.

I was also very happy with the length variations. The bedrooms I did were relatively small (200-400 SF). The length variety I received was perfect for this application. If you have a very large open room you will have way too many small pieces with this wood.

So far the finish has held up quite nicely, but I've only had it for a few months and very little foot traffic.

I give the product 4 stars only because I don't think the extreme color outliers are advertised at all.

I know this is Red Oak but what is the specific gravity? The moisture meter I am using lists 9 different species ranging from .59 to .69.

Unfortunately we source from several mills across the continent for the red oak to make this prefinished product and have no way to know whether it is Quercus rubra (Northern red oak) or Quercus falcata (Southern red oak) in any given manufacturing run.

I have existing red oak that was installed unfinished and then finished normally with 3 coats of poly. This floor has ambered in 3 years - will this product also amber in color over time?

Wood products can be dramatic in appearance, especially the exotics. Only factory made products such as tile, vinyl, and wallpaper will have uniformity of color. Keep in mind that wood and corks are natural product and no two installed floors will be identical. Variations in appearance are completely normal and are a desired characteristic. As your floor ages, color or shading called “patina” can occur. This process can be rapid the first 3 months, less in 6 months, then finishing off in about I year. Moving the furniture and rugs around helps to even out areas that were not exposed to light. Try to avoid large area rugs for the first 3 months.

All wood species can change color over time due to oxidation or when exposed to light. In some species, the change can be more dramatic and may darken in color over time, while others tend to lighten. Currently there is no known value set for Patina or color change of a species so contractors and or customers should be aware of this normal condition. The patina process is unrelated to the urethane finishes.

We can only recommend our Bellawood Floor Cleaner, or cleaners that are safe for water based urethane finishes. Never use any polish, wax, oil soaps or cleaners that add shine to the floor. In addition, we do not recommend using steamers or wet-jet cleaning systems for hardwood because spraying can collect moisture in between board edges. The use of these products is at your own risk.

Floating Engineered hardwood, tongue and groove engineered and certain laminate flooring can be used over most radiant heat.  Some flooring does perform better than others with radiant heat applications. The important thing is to follow the particular flooring manufacturer recommendations for radiant heat as well as sustaining recommended temperature and humidity. In addition the radiant heat manufacturer's recommended floor coverings must be considered as not all floors may be appropriate.

Engineered wood and floating floors (floors not attached to the subfloor) are most recommended for radiant heat. However, if you should choose to use solid wood for this application select species with the best stability ratings. Be aware that even species with better dimensional stability characteristics cannot predictably be guaranteed to perform well over radiant heat. Therefore, solid wood applications over radiant in-floor heat is not recommended nor warrantied. Because of the wide array of in-floor heating systems on the market each with its own features and limitations please consult with your radiant flooring provider for installation methods and application advice.
