  • Q:

can this be installed over an existing indoor outdoor carpet in a 3 season room?
Asked on 9/27/2015 by mooch from haskell, nj

    1 answer

Possibly, if you remove the carpet and prepare the subfloor for nail down installation.

Wood flooring is a dynamic material subject to changes in dimension as a result of changes in humidity in the surrounding environment. It is recommended that the rooms that will have prefinished wood installed be climate controlled with temperatures of 50 to 80 degrees F., preferably 65 to 75 degrees F. humidity of 30% to 50% maintained. In addition, the rooms should not be closed off from a normal air flow. Therefore with prefinished flooring, you will experience problems in a non-environmentally controlled area. Our most stable flooring is our engineered, bamboo, cork, vinyl, and laminate. They too require climate control in their expressed warranty's.

Urethane finish can't handle the dimensional changes that take place with extreme environmental shifts, HOWEVER you can use an unfinished hardwood like this (preferably quarter/rift sawn) finished with tung or other natural oils as with covered porch flooring. These site finished penetrating sealers expand and contract with the flooring without cracking.

SUMMARY: Clear grade flooring contains mostly heartwood with a minimum number of character marks and discoloration. This provides a uniform appearance that is free of knots while allowing for all natural heartwood color variations. Clear grade products have the longest average plank length of all standard wood grades.
DETAILED: Specific characteristics of Clear grade products will vary by wood species; however, typically include such things as small burls, fine pin holes, and equivalent characters such as small tight checks or small darker or lighter colored streaks. Clear grade pre-finished flooring will have a plank face that is practically free of all finishing defects including debris, skips, streaks, blisters, chipping, or scratches.
NOTE: This grade description is intended only to provide general characteristics of the identified wood grade, and is not all-inclusive. Specific wood characteristics and acceptance criteria may vary by wood species. A 5% allowance per box is established for pieces exhibiting one or more milling, grading, or finishing defects
      Thank you for your inquiry
