Not easy to work with but great quality underlayment.

By OscarD

from Chicago

Pros

  • Great sound proofing
  • Thick

Cons

  • A bit tricky to work with

Best Uses

I used this as an underlayment for a 12mm Brazilian koa laminate flooring and it made the flooring very quiet and solid. The laminate has a build in pad and with this underlayment the floor did not feel squishy at all.

I gave it four stars because it is a bit difficult to work with and cut. It's a bit stiff so you have to make sure you line up your seams very well before remove the self adhesive strip cover. Once you figure out the best way to lay it down it goes down pretty easy. Also the ends will want to roll back up on you so make sure you weight it down with something to keep it from rolling back up.

Because of the material it can be a bit challenging to cut so make sure you grab a new blade for that. I would recommend this underlayment, especially for laminates with built in pads.

    Excellent product!

    Pros

    • Easy to install.
    • Excellent vapor, warmth and sound cushioning

    Cons

    • slightly annoying to unroll.

    Best Uses

    • concrete subfloor.

We used this product under our new Lumber Liquidator laminate. We put 700 sq ft of flooring on our main floor. We have no basement so our we are on a concrete slab. This underlayment has really helped to keep our feet warm and the dampness out. It also does a great job of cushioning and dissipating the sounds of two noisy toddler boys and a large dog. The only down fall was the way it was rolled. Maybe it was the way we were laying our floor and needed to unroll it but it was rolled backwards for our usage. We had to unroll and re-roll each roll. However, it was a minor inconvenience.

    Service and delivery comments:

We ordered online and our products arrived in store within just a few days! We promptly received a call when our order was in and pick up was a breeze!

    Cons

Not so sure on the change from 5/8th to 1/2". My brother put in 5/8 a few years ago and had no trouble with. Now it was only available in 1/2 and the edges were somewhat easy to chip awhile installing.

This stuff is very dense, silent, lays flat, and lines up fairly well if you have a butt joint. I have used several types, and this is the best I have tried.

The people at the outlet were friendly.

          Depends?
Is there wood or concrete under the tile
I would defer to the laminate installation instructions and follow them.

      • Q:

I am putting Bellawood engineered oak in a dry basement, as a floating floor. I have purchased Bellawood Platinum Underlayment, which has a built in moisture barrier. But the silver moisture barrier is on the top side, not on the side that faces the concrete. Am I also supposed to put a 6 mil poly moisture barrier underneath this Platinum Underlayment product? If not, I would think that the paper side of the Platinum underlayment would wick moisture up from the concrete.

      • Q:

I am installing 80 sq ft of 5/8 x 3 3/4" solid bamboo flooring on the 9th floor of a condo building. Does this underlayment get glued down and then the flooring gets glued to it? If so, does the smooth side go down? Also, how necessary is the glue and can the underlayment float as well as the flooring? The glue shipped to me is both Exmore Pro and Exmore Max.
