    Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 4 1/4" Red Oak:

We ordered this 4" Select unfinished red oak for our kitchen and family room. It came within one week of our order. The wood is attractive and had very few knots and wormholes. Installation was easy with an air-compressed hardwood nailer. However, several pieces contained damaged tounges to the point of waste. Also, there were more short boards than I would have anticipated for Select grade. Having a long, narrow family room (11x21), the floor looks a bit choppy with all the short peices. Overall, we are happy with the product, but have not gotten to the finishing stage yet.

WE purchased this product for three br's. Had virtually no waste. Some boards a slight wide, but they made thier own rows. Do pay attention to proper sanding. We used Minwax cherry stain on red oak to get a great warm wood look. Go figure. Will purchase this again for another project.

              Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 4 1/4" Red Oak:

As a professional hardwood flooring contractor, I thought I could save a couple of dollars using this product. Many boards were 1/8 inch narrow, this means stopping work to either pull the board out or finding another narrow one. Once I realized this, we used a caliper to measure each board, so of course I lost money on this install.[...]

                Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 4 1/4" Red Oak:

I am a do-it-yourselfer and this has been my first experience putting in hardwood flooring. Not as difficult as I thought and the results have been outstanding. The red oak is beautiful and the quality from LL has been excellent. I've ordered twice, about 250 sq ft each time. The different orders matched extremely well and couldn't be happier. There was about 5% waste as far as unusable wood (warped, damaged, cracked, etc). For the price, wasn't upset and was able to use some of it in closets and areas where it wasn't noticeable. One product I wish LL would carry is the wood putty fill for small gaps. Had to get that a Lowes. Have used a Bostich reconditioned U/MFN manual nailer from amazon. Got for $100 and has held up through 500 sq ft with no problems.

Installed this in Master Bedroom. Overall happy with the product/value proposition but question the 'Select' designation. Had too many short pieces and some knots. Boards were fairly straight (not warped) but ends were not all square.

Due to the bundle size, I ordered too much wood. I can't return unfinished wood and the amount left over is enough for an 8X8 room size. It is money wasted.

Our Red Oak has been down a year now [...] Take your time on the sanding and finishing - its not hard and it makes all the difference. Easy to install but give yourself a bit extra wood and time to play with until you get the hang of it. A rubber mallet was a great help to tap it into place. We are preparing to do our family room, breakfast room and kitchen this year. Our realtor friend says it will dramatically increase our home's value - especially when we finish putting it in all the rest of the house.Way classier than laminate!

What is the actual physical width? 4" exactly?, 4-1/4"? or less than 4"? I have looked at flooring that claimed to be 4" but when measured it was less than 4". I am splicing into existing floor and therfore must have exactly 4". Thank You.

For higher humidity areas I would recommend a more stable species.
It is always important to control the interior environment RH (relative humidity) within the home between 30 & 50% for any wood species.

3/4 inch flooring can be installed on a slab by either installing a plywood subfloor or using Elastilon as your installation system. For details type "cement" here - www.lumberliquidators.com/ll/flooring/Flooring101

If I were going to paint the floor vs stain. Is there a wood you would recommend (ie type, width, grade)? What are the Pros/Cons to painting your floor.

                            A:

If you are going to paint a floor you can get by with a lesser grade such as natural, the width is would simply be a matter of preference. While painting is easier than staining and finishing, it does cover up the natural beauty of the wood grain.
