      Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak:

We took down the walls separating our living room, dining room, and kitchen to create an open floor plan. We used this product throughout the kitchen and blended it into the existing red oak from the other two rooms. After sanding and staining, you can't even tell that some is brand new and some is 65 years old.

          Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak:

I am happy with this floor. It was a hallway, wasn't large, about 125 feet but had eight door openings and all but one went to another style flooring so it took a while for me to do. There were maybe 25% crooked planks but there is no way around that with natural wood. I just cut down some of the longer ones that were crooked and was able to use them that way. I bought 138 feet, the area was 125 feet and I had about 6 feet left over, so there was very little unusable product. I'm happy, I would buy it again.

            Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak:

It's quality flooring for a site-finish application (as opposed to pre-finished). I wanted site finish because I was matching it to some existing red oak that "came with the house." It matched perfectly in size and tone to the existing (which is 30 years old). I didn't stain it, and I used satin polyurethane with good results. The "site finish" also means that the poly forms a "skin" filling any hairline gaps between boards, which is something you don't get with pre-finished flooring (but it's a lot more work). It took me 4 weekends of all-day labor to install about 400 sqft. Strongly recommend using cleat nails as opposed to staples for this flooring - I had 0 jams or misfires, even with a cheap-o flooring nailer. Only about 10 boards in 20 boxes had "milling errors" like bad tongues, etc. or really prominent knots, so this is quality stuff. However, you need to give it a light sand before finishing because there will be some mill marks and burnishing (from friction in transit) that cause patches of "shine" on the boards. This comes right off and can be done with a hand orbital sander before you screen the whole floor lightly. Bottom line: If you want to slap something down in a weekend, don't buy this floor - get some pre-finished float flooring. This is a lot of work to install. But it's the real deal and will last a long time if done right.

            Service and delivery comments:

Pickup at LL was easy and issue-free. I rented a truck from a nationwide chain to save on deliver fees. I fit 40 boxes in a 10' truck easily. It was about 2,200 lbs. of flooring total.

                          A:

R.L. Colston is an unfinished flooring that requires site sanding and finishing. Today's hardwood finishes are most durable and are applied in a quality controlled environment. We offer several pre-finish coatings, whereas most site-finished floors -sanded and finished at the job site- would only have two or three coats applied, then these must be air dried.

There are more advantages than disadvantages of pre-finished materials. Nearly all pre-finished hardwood floors will have beveled edges to some extent. On the other hand, site finished flooring will have a flawless uniform appearance when sanded. Many people with health concerns or respiratory issues choose pre-finished floors because these are installed without the usual sanding dust and fumes commonly associated with site finished floors. Another benefit is that these can be installed and walked on the same day!

Our Bellawood floors are factory pre-finished with an aluminum oxide water-base urethane using a multi-step application process. (8) coats are applied to most domestic and exotic wood species and each coat is hard-cured using Ultraviolet (UV) light. Bellawood pre-finished flooring offers superior wear resistance and is backed by a limited 100-year warranty! Maintaining the appearance of any wood floor requires close attention to in-door climate controls during seasonal changes.

Therefore, whether you choose one of our many “pre-finished” or “un-finished styles, we will have a floor for you. Let us know how we can help with your selection.

                          A:

This is a solid 3/4" product designed to be nailed to a wood substrate.
But can be installed over concrete using our Elastilon underlayment.
What you should know about Elastilon Strong
An Elastilon-backed wood floor is much faster to install than traditional nail or glue-down methods.
Elastilon Strong can be installed on new concrete floors, handling up to 3.9% moisture content. A vapour barrier of at least 6 mil PE should be used below grade and on newly poured concrete above grade where the moisture content is above 3.9%.
Laid down with a 5/8” (15 mm) expansion gap, Elastilon Strong creates a dynamic, floating floor that expands or contracts naturally with the hardwood.
Elastilon Strong has no odor and is free of volatile materials.
                          Elastilon Strong gives cushioned comfort.
1/8” (3 mm) thick Elastilon Strong has ratings of IIC 62 and STC 54.
                          Thermal resistance: R _ 0,15 (m K) / W
Elastilon Strong carries a 70-year limited warranty. Thank you for your inquiry.

                          A:

                          ACCLIMATION/CONDITIONING THE FLOORING -SEE MOISTURE
All wood products are affected by environmental conditions especially prefinished materials. Acclimate the new flooring in the areas to be installed to normal lived-in conditions while in the boxes. Length of time is not the determining factor. The goal is to reach a moisture equilibrium or balance between the new flooring with its surroundings before installation. This balance could be achieved in as little as 1 to 5 days, or longer for some exotic species. For best performance, condition the flooring to consistent indoor temperatures of 60°-80° F and indoor humidity levels of 30% - 50%. Very dry or humid regions usually require extended conditioning. Recommended acclimation levels maintained even after the installation will minimize board movement, excessive squeaks and gaps.
Proper acclimation, moisture testing of the product and subfloor, even jobsite conditions all work together for the continued success of the installation and is the responsibility of those overseeing the project -the installer or wood floor owner.
You can find complete installation instructions on the product page by clicking on the specs tab and then clicking on - Installation Guide.pdf
                          Thank you for writing in.
