Nice flooring but beware of the short lenths

By flip2green

from Chanhassen, MN

When purchasing, I was told the "premium" grade was slightly better color consistency, but there was no mention of lengths. I probably would have opted for the premium, had I known that. So the floor looks OK, but a bit patchy.

Bellawood 5" Red Oak Hardwood Floor

The quality control for the Bellawood 5" red oak needs to be improved. I had many issues with differences in width of lumber thus creating gaps between boards.

Perfect: from installation to looks!

Pros

  • Easy To Install
  • Looks beautiful
  • Minimal Cutting
  • Virtually No Waste

Cons

  • Many short pieces

Best Uses

At first my husband was disappointed with the many short pieces but he was able to use a lot in the closets. Then, he realized that because of the short pieces he was able to fill in easily and hardly had to stop to cut longer pieces. This made for about 1% waste instead of the usual 10%, so you will save money. We have used this product in the whole house and we love it. We have had Bellawood products before but in the narrower width and we loved it but we are glad we went with the wider width this time; it's a different look and we so happy we did it. It's another great Bellawood product!

I got two samples, both of which were relatively light and had a nice red oak look. When I opened the box, there was significant variability which I expected, but the darker pieces had a brown tone rather than a red tone and were not at all represented by the samples. They did not look like red oak at all. Luckily I was only needing a small amount so I just didn't use the darker pieces.

This was a great product. I installed in on the entire first floor of my house: living room, dinning room, kitchen, den, family room, half bath, and foyer. Installation was easy once funiture was out of the way. Very littlw waste. I like the flow of my house now with no thresholds.

When installed properly according to the manufacturer instructions and with the correct nailer shoe for pre-finished flooring there will be no denting or marring of the surface.

Someone asked if the the 3.75" and 5" width rustic red oak could be installed together. The reviewer answered that it wasn't recommended to install the two sizes together since they are milled differently but also said that since it was a rustic red oak product, it would all be sanded down anyway. I thought the description was that this was a prefinished product. Aren't all Bellawood floors prefinished? Thank you.

It would not be recommended for the rustic product because we have several vendors (mills) that provide our raw material and when you mix mills they may not fit together (align) properly.
But then again this is rustic unfinished and it will all be sanded down anyway.
