Virginia Mill Works Co.- 1/2" x 5" Sand Creek Birch- Prefinished Handscraped Engineered Flooring- 30 Year Warranty

Length: Random 10" - 48.6"

Colonial American homes were built with wooden floors that were sawn using basic hand-held tools. The hand-crafted workmanship that went into those floors can be found in Virginia Mill Works handscraped floors.

About Handscraped Flooring:

Handscraped or distressed hardwood floors have a natural worn appearance. They look like floors from the days when floors were finished by hand.

About Engineered:
Hardwood veneer layers are stacked on one another, with the grain of the adjacent layers oriented perpendicular to each other.
Because wood expands and contracts in the direction of the grain, one layer stabilizes the next, resulting in a product that is less susceptible to the effects of moisture & temperature change.

It's simple...
Beautiful look. Beautiful quality. Beautiful price.

  • Q:

What kind of materials make up the adjacent underlying layers?
Asked on 8/6/2014 by Carole from Pensacola, FL

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Hardwood ply. Engineered hardwood is constructed with layers of hardwood veneer, glued and heat pressed together to create a product that can range in thickness from 5/16” up to 9/16", having 3 to 8 plys. The top veneer can range in thickness up to 1/4", depending on the manufacturer. In order to create an engineered hardwood, these plys or layers are stacked on top of each other with each layer or grain of the wood facing perpendicular to each other. Once the desired thickness is achieved, the boards are then cut into the correct board width. From there, the boards are then manufactured to have a tongue or groove on the edges. The final step is to add stain and finish. By design, engineered hardwood becomes less susceptible to the effects of moisture and temperature fluctuations. Therefore, engineered hardwood is referred to as being dimensionally stable. Solid hardwood is not as efficient in dimensional stability because the grain throughout the board runs in only one direction. The positive stability of engineered hardwood allows it to be glued directly to concrete above or below grade and is also a better choice for radiant heat applications compared to solid wood. Moisture barriers over concrete is always recommended.

Some styles of engineered flooring can be stapled down, nailed down, glued to cement or floated.

Thank you for your recent purchase.
Unfortunately stained wood products can vary slightly, I would recommend dealing with the store directly where purchased to see what can be done if it is way off in color.

  • Q:

We had this floor installed about 9 months ago. I recently noticed a gap between 2 of the planks. The gap has formed between the plank next to the baseboard and the one next to it. What do you recommend to do to repair this gap? And will the gap cause other planks to shift and cause more gapping between other planks?
Asked on 6/17/2013 by Anne from Hamburg, NY

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Excessive squeaks and gapping can result from poor or no acclimation or very low humidity. If it is near a heat source or humidity levels drop below 35% there could be excessive drying causing the board to contract. Fastener or adhesive failure could possibly contribute. • Q:

Can the 7/16 or 1/2" engineered hardwoods be installed over concrete floor with radiant heat in concrete?
Asked on 5/9/2013 by Rick from West Chester, Pa

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Floating Engineered hardwood, tongue and groove engineered and certain laminate flooring can be used over most radiant heat.  Some flooring does perform better than others with radiant heat applications. The important thing is to follow the particular flooring manufacturer recommendations for radiant heat as well as sustaining recommended temperature and humidity. In addition the radiant heat manufacturer's recommended floor coverings must be considered as not all floors may be appropriate.
