Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Select Ash:
Based on the quality and appearance of Select Ash Bellawood when we installed it in two rooms of an older Cape cottage in Massachusetts, and its performance, we decided to use it remodelling floors throughout our 1950s cottage in south Alabama. The ash will be in the kitchen too. We used the narrow boards in the Cape, but the wider boards for the south. So far we have not installed it, since it is part of a major renovation and will be installed by a professional. The 1200 feet we purchased is acclimating to our high humidity conditions here.
My only issue is how to get the 100 year warranty, since I saw nothing that mentioned the process in the paperwork.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Select Ash:
Very nice floor, but yellows over time. I installed in a room 3 years ago, and there are rug lines. New installation with this select ash went well. However, there was a fair amount of "fork lift" damage. Since bellawood uses the long pieces to layer the top and bottom of the boxes with the little pieces in the middle, all the fork lift damage was to the long pieces. Out of 15 boxes, 5 of them had moderate damage.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Select Ash:
This is my 4th flooring install and 3rd using ash. The first ash install was a disaster. Wood was different heights and widths and had a huge amount of unusable wood. For the second ash install, I demand all the wood come from the same lot, and the install went very smooth with very little waste. The 3rd ash install 3 years later, also went very smooth with almost no waste.
However, from the hallway into a bedroom where the new ash was installed, there is a very distinctive color change. This aluminum oxide finish, although hard and easy to clean, yellows a lot. In one room where there was a rug, there are very noticeable rug-lines.
I have other wood floors that were unfinished, where I finished with a stain and a water born oil modified polyurethane. That finish has been on for 10 years with no yellowing.
I would recommend it to a friend, but with some warnings attached from lessons learned.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Select Ash:
The product comes in random lengths which means you will have more minor variations in the heights of the boards compared to longer boards. These will be more obvious if the sub floor is not dead level. If you have this "problem" you either have to sand the sub floor smooth or install an unfinished floor, sand it true and then finish. For my family we can live with the less than 1/16 inch variations.

Q:
I live in Miami, FL. The sub-floor in the home I want to install the wood flooring on is planks with 3/4" - 1" spacing (open to the crawl space) between them. The house was built in 1951, has red oak flooring that we are removing. There is no sign of moisture. I would like to use Ash. Can I use the solid wood with a moisture barrier over the sub-floor? The house temperature will always be maintained between the recommended range. There currently is no moisture barrier now and the floor is 60 years old and is in pretty good condition considering the sub-floor. Also, is it ok to use an underlayment for sound reduction or is that not recommended for solid wood?1 answer
A:
I would recommend putting the proper moisture barrier over the earth in the crawl space and then install a 3/8" minimum CDX plywood over the board subfloor and then your 15 or 30 lb roofing felt.Q:
I live in a high moisture coastal area. I have been told not to use the underlay paper mat due to the moisture. What if any underlay materail do you recommend in high moisture areas??1 answer
A:
In a high moisture area you would be better served using an engineered floor or be very sure you can maintain the Temperature and humidity in the home between 60F-80F and humidity between 30% and 50% for best results maintained year round. If unable to keep the temperature and humidity at these levels Engineered or laminate flooring will perform better as they have higher dimensional stability. Normally under nail down flooring 15 black roofing paper is used over a wood subfloor. The wood subfloor moisture content should not be exceed 12%.Q:
Can I use flooring staples (installed with a floor gun) with the 3/4" x 5" Select Ash??1 answer
A:
15.5 gage 1/2" crown 2" long staples can work or 2" long cleat nails can work. When nailing space the staples or nails 8" apart and 1" to 2" from the board ends.Q:
Can you install this wood over radiant?1 answer
A:
As you may know, some wood species are better candidates for radiant heat (RH) installations that others, if you prefer solid wood floors, choose a #species known for its *stability. Here is the order for best floor type selections as recommended by the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA)Q:
what are dimensions, and quantity, of length per box?1 answer
A:
The BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 5" Select Ash comes in a box that will cover 21 square feet. The flooring comes in random lengths between 12" to 86" long. The box is about 11" wide x 87" long.
