Comments about BELLAWOOD 5/16" x 2-1/4" Select Brazilian Chestnut:

We installed this floor in our living room, and it is just beautiful. It is the nicest floor we have ever owned. Be sure to get the Bellawood hardwood cleaning kit for $25, It is worth every cent. It is so easy to clean and just looks beautiful.

Service and delivery comments:

We didn't have this delivered, Jimmy at the Pensacola, Florida store is awesome. we had picked out something else (no where near as nice}, and Jimmy said he had some bellawood in the odd lots with the amount of footage that we needed. It was $1 dollar a foot cheaper than what we were going to buy. I waited for so long to get my floor and never thought we could afford Bellawood. I love it. Thanks Jimmy for paying attention to customers needs.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 5/16" x 2-1/4" Select Brazilian Chestnut:

My roommate and a professional carpenter installed about 350 sq ft of this flooring in my living room. I love the various shades of color and grains in this wood- it's beautiful, like a piece of art! I ordered 9 boxes of wood. Some boxes had mostly 7 ft boards, whereas other boxes had mostly medium and short pieces, so we emptied out all boxes and sorted to make sure we had enough long boards to take us to the last row and put in more short boards where furniture would be placed. It would have been easier to arrange if we had more 5-6 fit lengths. We used a pneumatic Porta-Nailer 461, made for 5/16" to 1/2" wood, which shot hairpin shaped 1" long 18 gauge 1/4" wide staples into the tongues of the wood perfectly so the tongues and grooves wood fit together nicely without any problem. I had to get 5/16" flooring to go with the rest of the hardwood in the house...wish I could afford to replace the rest of the floors with this product....I love it.

slower installation..not thrilled with the 5/16's thickness..leaves room to move..the tongues and grooves break easily..afraid pieces of the floor will come up after time..i would only glue this floor down to be sure

        • Q:

Can this flooring be glued down in a slab installation?
          Asked on 4/30/2012 by Anonymous

          1 answer

          • CUSTOMER CARE

            A:

Yes. All 1/2" and under Solid Hardwood (and certain Virginia Mill Works and 3/4" shorts 36" and shorter) can be glued as well but On or Above Grade only. Troweled on Moisture Barrier is recommended on concrete. Always use the same manufacturer of moisture barrier and adhesive or combo type adhesive moisture barrier.

You can glue to flat level concrete free of contaminates, moisture and sealers.

        • Q:

We like this wood but I think we'd prefer the 3/4" x 3 1/4" version. What are the advantages of getting the thicker edition of this [or any] wood flooring?
Asked on 1/26/2012 by Bud from Seneca

          1 answer

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

Usually the lower profiles are used for applications when the height of finished floor and cost are considered. The thicker 3/4" products are of course going to last longer in the long run because they can be re-finished more times.

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factor that influence wear.

        • Q:

I bought the 5/16" X 2 1/4" Brazilian Chestnut. Another reviewer for the 3/8" X 3" Brazilian Chestnut used the Elastilon underlayment product and found the installation to be very easy. Could we use Elastilon with the 5/16" product, and if so, would we still need to nail every board?

The T & G is so tiny in the 5/16 product, that we think that top nailing would be our only nailing option. If top nailing with a compressor w/ nailer attachment, which size nails would you recommend?
Asked on 8/7/2011 by margaret from Forest Knolls, CA

          1 answer

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

You can use Elastilon with thin 5/16" flooring but you must first make sure that the subfloor is very flat. When using Elastilon you can not use any nails to fasten the planks down. If you would like to nail down this product you can try a 20 gage model 200 nail gun made from Powernail using 20 gage 1" long cleat nails. Use # 15 felt paper under the flooring when nailing over a wood subfloor. Top nailing would only be done on the first and last rows being installed using 15 or 16 gage finish nails or pre-drill and hand nail using a 3d finish nail. Use the link below to find installation instructions.

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

It will depend on which adhesive product you will be using (Mapei or Bostik, one or two part) and that will depend on the moisture content of the subfloor.

        • Q:

In the past I have installed 3/4" oak flooring with nails. This flooring is only 5/16" thick and 140% harder than oak. Are there any problem associated with a thiner harder floor, such as spliting or a more dificult installation? Which would you recommend nailing or stapling?
Asked on 6/10/2011 by Ron the builder from Williamsport, PA

          1 answer

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

            [EXOTIC WOOD NAILING TIPS]:
Tongue fracture and surface dimpling during installation is common and can be minimized by (1) Installing the flooring in proper lighting (2) using the correct nail thickness, (3) using the recommended shoe adaptor, or (4) changing the angle of
            nail entry.
To further reduce the occurrence of surface dimpling and tongue fracture the use of flooring nailers with a thinner 18-20
gage cleat nail may be needed for the harder exotics species. In addition, many installers will sometimes temporarily adjust
the nailer angle by applying layers of duct tape to the bottom foot plate of the nailer. The use of an over-size base or foot
plate to distribute the nailing force is encouraged. If however, surface dimpling or tongue fracture occurs when nailing the
denser species, drilling pilot holes and hand nailing may be required.
 Use caution when fastening the harder exotics with Staplers. The drive bar in Staplers are wider and if fasteners are
overdriven can act like a wood chisel, splitting tongues. Do not mix fasteners when nailing. Staples and cleats hold differently
when mixed can result in irregular seasonal gapping and or movement. When face or top nailing, pick areas of the grain or
pattern that would best hide touch-up fillers.
 If nailers prove difficult fastening the lower profile 3/8”or 5/16” floors, many installers will use 100% urethane wood floor
adhesives rather than nailers, especially with the more brittle species like; Australian Cypress, Brazilian Walnut, Teaks. Do
not use significantly bowed, crooked or twisted boards. Use a wood spline or slip tongue whenever a change of board direction
is needed, wood splines should be both glued and nailed into place. Forcing or pounding floor boards together with a rubber
mallet during assembly may burse or damage unprotected board edges.
            Thank you for your question.

Our Bellawood has a micro-bevel which makes for a very small V-groove.
