Beautiful but challenging

Used this product to cover about 400 sq ft in a living room addition. Because of issues with differing floor heights where our addition meets the original house, I needed to use the thinnest floor I felt I could get away with. All the flooring I've installed in the past has been 3/4". The 3/8" thickness of this flooring creates challenges.

The good things first. The wood is beautiful. My wife and I love the variation in grain and the range of tones. If you want a completely uniform look to your floor--this isn't it. The Brazillian chestnut is very hard, so I anticipate it will hold up well over time. The flooring was fairly easy to put down, with some caveats mentioned in the next paragraph.

The bad. Lumber Liquidators recommends about 10% overage for this product--that seems about right. I wish I'd been more critical and tossed out a few more boards. I had plenty of material left over, and there are about 3 boards in my floor I wish I hadn't put down--nothing too bad, but at the time I didn't know I'd have plenty left over. There are manufacturing defects, and you need to look at each board with some care before putting it down. Among the pieces I culled are some that warped or bowed beyond use, a few split/cracked boards, dinged corners, missing tongues, angled ends, inconsistent widths. All of this stuff is typical for flooring, but you hope the factory weeds these defects out so you don't have to pay for it and do the work yourself.

The biggest challenge I had probably arose from the thinness of the material. The narrow tongues are prone to splitting. Also, I found it impossible to put down the material without popping up the finish in places. Not sure what to do about this. To have pulled every board with popped finish would have left me with half the flooring I needed. I will check with LL to see if there is a way to do small scale repairs, but if not, the defects are not particularly noticeable at the moment (we'll see how they wear).
