Comments about BELLAWOOD 5/16" x 2-1/4" Select Brazilian Redwood:

This floor is absolutely gorgeous. We ordered 16 boxes and so far have installed 8 boxes. We have removed carpet and ceramic tile to install in living room, main hallway, kitchen, dining and foyer. So far we have had less than the 5% waste allowed but have had a few milling issues and damaged corners. Not bad though. We are using the Norge 4 in 1 flooring stapler to install. I was told to use 1 1/4" staples but tried them and most of them wouldn't go through the redwood. Switched to 1" staples and they do great. I would highly recommend using a stand up nailer over the hand stapler. It is a great tool but you do the whole install on your knees making it slow and painful. With that said I would choose this same floor again and will install in master bedroom and laundry room for our next project. Everyone that has seen the floor so far loves it. I love the color variation and it has a beautiful shine to it. Very pleased with Bellawood and Lumber Liquidators.

Comments about BELLAWOOD 5/16" x 2-1/4" Select Brazilian Redwood:

The floor looks great, especially migrating from a 10 year old carpet. It's pretty scratch resistant. I have 2 kids who are really active :). The wastage was minimal during installation and thanks to my contractor, who did an excellent job installing even though it was a challenge. I a, on a slab, so had to glue it down.

The LL store was extremely helpful as well....if you happen o be in Charlotte, talk to Matt in the store. Very knowledgable and guides you properly.

Great value for money and turns the house to a high value house instantly!

Not real good, chose it myself based on online reviews, ended up returning and using Golden Acacia - Casa De Color 3/4". Took a small bath on the opened boxes, but whatever, much happier with the 3/4" product.

            Service and delivery comments:

Patrick at the Matthews, NC store is great and really cares about the customer.

While the product is beautiful, it required a lot of trimming as the width was not uniform. Extra time and resulting cost overrun for installation.

I used the flooring in my dining room and living room. For the most part, I'm satisfied with the product. It is a cheap and easy way to get hardwood in the house, though having installed it myself, some of pieces could fit together a little better. The color has some really good looking pieces, but also some that aren't as great, so overall, an average grade. Bottom line, if I ever tackle installing hardwood again, I think I will look for a higher grade.

It was recommended to me to use staples . I see in one of the answers you do not recommend staples but a cleat nail method. Who make this 20 ga. cleat nailer? I do not want to have a lot of split pieces if the the staple will do that. I have the 5/16 x 2.25 Brazilian redwood.
Also should I use the red rosin paper underneath it?

                    A:

Brazilian Redwood is 141% harder than Red Oak. Many installers gluedown a hard, thin floor such as this to avoid nailing issues. However this is not always necessary.

Cleat nailers rather than staples have a better chance of penetrating the harder exotics. Better chance for 5/16", 3/8", and 1/2" is a 18 and 20 gage nail with a 50P or 200 POWERNAIL nailer. 18 gage with a 50P and a 3/4" adapter plate can work best on very hard 3/4"exotics. Or equivalent nailer like our Norge 18ga. Cleat Nailer.

                    http://www.powernail.com/rentals/index.htm

It's hard to say as one shipment or even bundle to bundle can vary in hardness or nail-ability. This depends on what conditions the tree was grown in, factors such as rainfall, to the area of a hillside it was grown in, are all contributors.

So the conclusion is you may be able to go with a pneumatic or hand nailer, maybe not. Installers will give two estimates when it comes to iron woods in case it requires drilling and hand nailing.

                    If Hand Nailing is Necessary-

One person can pre-drill the nail holes with a 3/32" (2mm) bit, the next can complete the nailing. For boards 2 1/4"-3 1/2" wide place a 2" nail, every 8”-10” inches along the side tongue edge and 2"-3" from the board ends. The wider the board the closer the nail spacing.

Use- ring or screw shank, galvanized or regular finishing nails 6d-7d.

How is this wood obtained? I love the look, but don't want to destroy old growth rainforests. Is this wood obtained from second growth logging and is it certified by the Forest Stewardship Council?

Lumber Liquidators is committed to responsible business practices as a central operating philosophy of our company. To that end, our lumber sourcing complies with U.S. laws and regulations including the Lacey Act, which prohibits the illegal trade of wildlife, fish, and plants, including lumber.

In addition, we work directly with a select group of vendors and mills with whom we have cultivated long-standing relationships to ensure the legal and environmentally-responsible sourcing and production of our products. Our suppliers agree to comply with our Supplier Code of Conduct with Respect to Environmental and Social Responsibility which requires, among other things, that their operations and the products they supply to us comply with all national and other applicable laws and regulations for the countries in which they operate.

We visit our suppliers’ mills and forests and assess their adherence to our code of conduct and its protocols concerning environmental, labor and health and safety matters. In the past, we have stopped using certain suppliers because we were not satisfied with the credibility of their responses to detailed questions about compliance issues and we regularly decline to pursue business with potential new suppliers that cannot provide evidence of compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

All of our Brazilian suppliers are members of the government-sanctioned Sisflora system which tracks harvesting plans and timber sources for the timber industry in Brazil.

For odd-lots to work, you generally need to cull out any unacceptable boards as they will by nature have varying characteristics. Waste can be over 30%.

                    A:

Brazilian Redwood could work over radiant heat if the flooring is properly acclimated, properly installed, and home is kept at a consistent temperature and humidity levels. When humidity gets below 30% a humidifier would be needed to raise humidity levels. The surface of the subfloor should not exceed 85 degrees. Engineered and laminate flooring are better choices to use over radiant heat in floor heating.

RADIANT HEAT SYSTEMS General Precautions and Recommendations - Always use moisture barriers. Engineered wood flooring is the flooring of choice for radiant heat. However, when using solid wood make certain the product selected is recommended. Choose species highest in stability ratings for this application. Australian Cypress, Mesquite, Bamboo, and Teaks are good species choices. Brazilian Cherry is not recommended. Because of the wide array of systems on the market, each with its own features, please consult with your radiant flooring provider for recommended installation methods. Hydronic systems must include in-floor temperature sensors and an outdoor thermostat that allows the system to adjust the water temperature according to anticipated heat loss. Radiant heat contributes to the drying out of all woods. Use of a humidification system may be required to maintain the proper humidity level. The indoor relative humidity must be maintained between 30-50% year round. Failure to do so can result in edge cupping, squeaking delamination, splintering, or face checking. Avoid shock to the floor, Before installation, run new systems to dissipate hidden or trapped moisture. During installation, reduce thermostat to 65°F. 48 hours after installation, slowly raise the temperature of the heating system to its preferred operating level over a period of 5 days. The surface temperature of the subfloor must never exceed 85°F in any location. The temperature setting must always remain within 15°F of normal operating level, and should never be turned completely off. Excessive heat, rapid heating, and/or failure to maintain humidity levels between 30% and 50% is likely to result in cracking, cupping, squeaking and other forms of floor issues. Slight surface splits (checking), particularly at the ends of planks, should be expected with installations over radiant heat and does not constitute a product failure. Test for moisture, This procedure must be followed regardless of the time of year. Prior to installation over radiant heat, moisture testing must be conducted and documented. The moisture content for concrete substrates must not exceed 3.0 lbs. per 1000 square feet in 24 hrs per ASTM 1669-89 (Calcium Chloride Test). Wood subfloors should not exceed 12% using a pin type meter. Do not install the flooring until excess moisture is corrected. RADIANT INSTALLATIONS Related information can be found on our website “Flooring 101” (1) When nailing planks over radiant heat ensure that fasteners are holding the flooring without damage to the radiant system. (2) When fully gluing planks over radiant heat ensure that the adhesives are recommended for this application.

These low profile floors are designed for several reasons. If you have an existing floor you want to keep level and 3/4" is too thick, then a 3/8" or 5/16 may be ideal.
The low profile floors can also be glued directly to on grade concrete and the price point is a little lower. The product will have the same Bellawood finish and warranty with any of these low profile products.

                    A:

We do not recommend steam mops or Roomba Scooba robots on our laminates or on any of our wood floor products. Although appropriate for kitchen sheet vinyl or ceramic tiles, wood, laminate and cork floorings have raw seam edges that can swell or cup with use of these cleaning methods. We recommend our Bellawood Floor Cleaner, or cleaners that are safe for water based urethane finishes.

                    A:

I would suggest using the Eco Silent Sound HD underlayment to increase sound proofing. With this underlayment you can do a nail down installation with 5/16" flooring or a glue down installation. To get the max sound proofing a glue down installation would be better. Nailing into a underlayment will decrease its sound proofing ability.
