Long Acclimation Time

By Trapezoid

from Pittsburgh PA

Pros

  • Excellent wear
  • Quality finish

Cons

  • moisture content too high

Best Uses

This is the 5th room I had installed the red cumaru flooring. I love the finish and the quality and it has held up extremely well under foot traffic. This flooring always arrives shortly after manufacture date and requires lengthy time to acclimate and lower the moisture content of the wood. I have waited over a month to install each time I have used it. Installed too early results in unacceptable cracks between the pieces when it does dry. I love the floor but hate the excessive wait I have experienced so far with the product.

    Service and delivery comments:

Service is good and load time was reasonable.

Very pleased with this flooring choice. Hard wood that will hold up to heavy traffic, kids, pets, etc. Love the color variations and wood grain. Matches up well against the existing Brazilian Mesquite in an adjacent room. Only negative is that in my opinion, there are more pieces with a manufacturer defect than what is expected. Quality control should catch pieces that are not square, cut edges, etc. Most pieces can be used if cut to smaller size, in a closet, etc. so not as much waste in the end. But you do need to check each piece before you install it to avoid taking pieces out later.

What is the up side finish (how many layers and is it UV finished) and bottom side finish?

          A:

Our Bellawood floors are factory pre-finished with a proprietary formula of aluminum oxide and urethane using a multi-step application process. The application is typically performed in a six step process and is hard-cured using ultraviolet (UV) light. The average dry film thickness for Bellawood is more than 3.5 mils which is one reason Bellawood flooring offers superior wear resistance and is backed by a limited 100-year transferrable warranty!
The bottom of the planks are not finished.
Thank you for your interest in our flooring products.

      • Q:

How easy the color will change over time compared to other spicies such as Brazilian Cherry and Oak?
        Asked on 4/28/2015 by Quinn

        1 answer

        • Staff Reviewer

          A:

Wood products can be dramatic in appearance, especially the exotics. Only factory made products such as tile, vinyl, and wallpaper will have uniformity of color. Keep in mind that wood and corks are natural product and no two installed floors will be identical. Variations in appearance are completely normal and are a desired characteristic. As your floor ages, color or shading called "patina" can occur. This process can be rapid the first 3 months, less in 6 months, then finishing off in about I year. Moving the furniture and rugs around helps to even out areas that were not exposed to light. Try to avoid large area rugs for the first 3 months.
All wood species can change color over time due to oxidation or when exposed to light. In some species, the change can be more dramatic and may darken in color over time, while others tend to lighten. Currently there is no known value set for Patina or color change of a species so contractors and or customers should be aware of this normal condition. The patina process is unrelated to the urethane finishes.
When installing wood floors, select boards from several boxes. Working from one box at a time can create poor color grouping or placement of any flooring. Any one board you feel is unacceptable to install can simply be discarded, replaced with the 5-10% overage you should have on hand. Thank you for your inquiry

All of our flooring products are recommended for interior use only and designed to be installed in a climate controlled environment.
Being a natural product it will be subject to the effects of temperature and humidity. If proper heat and humidity levels are not maintained your flooring may shift, shrink, expand, gap or buckle.
