Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 3-1/8" Southern Yellow Pine:

Would have rather had the boards in all one length so I could cut the lengths I desired instead of the different lengths in the bundle that I had to adjust for in placing the wood on the floor.

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 3-1/8" Southern Yellow Pine:

Ordered two bundles for a stair landing in an old farm house 25 square ft.

Pros... Less than 10% cull for warpage and large knots, apearance is good, good grain and color for pine.

Cons... ENDS ARE NOT SQUARE(super annoying if you nail down a couple before noticing), wear layer is 3/16(product may not live through two heavy sandings) and small pieces(70% two footers)

Conclusion: Looks good completed but for a small project, I would have been better off buying 3" beadboard/strip flooring from a builders supply. The dimensions are the same, you can cull before you buy and lengths are up to twelve feet. The cost is a little more, but compared to the aggro of chopping the the ends of 2' sticks just to square, it would have been worth it.

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 3-1/8" Southern Yellow Pine:

Beautiful rustic/outdoorsy floor. You will get some out of spec boards, both in thickness and in width. I was able to use the off-width boards to cheat in some slop in the squarness of my 114 year old room. High low boards were just sanded at the joints to even out. This is not nail and forget flooring. It's a little more high maintenance. Be sure to square the ends of every board. Many of the end cuts are rough or not quite square. I got a few boards that are grey stained from natural fungus in the wood. They are beautiful when finished, you just need to spread them throughout the floor. Also used some for casing in a duct run and it was awesome in that application. After aggressively culling open knots and trimming the ends, I got less than 10% cull. Floor is absolutely beautiful with an antique oil finish. I would highly recommend it if you're looking for a northwoods cabin look or installing in an antique house with pine floors. About 25% of the boards needed to be facenailed to flush the joints up. You will want to pre-drill and use 2" trim nails for this.

I bought this flooring to match what I already had in my house. The thing I should have know is that 100 year old pine is going to be denser and more resistant to dings and scratches then this new growth stuff. I'd suggest you go for a hardwood like oak in stead.

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 3-1/8" Southern Yellow Pine:

The planks come in 3, 4, and 7 foot long pieces. The tongue and grove is on only the long edges of the planks. Neither the long edges nor the ends are beveled. I installed this on the cathedral ceiling in a bedroom that I built over a garage. It was easy to install using a pneumatic nail gun. The finished ceiling looks great. Since it was installed on a ceiling, I had to nail it to ceiling joists that are 16" O.C. This meant I had to trim 4" off of each of the 3 and 7 foot planks. Also, the ends of most of the planks were not quite perpendicular to the long sides, so I had to trim all of the ends slightly. However, for the price, this was a minor annoyance.

This is the second time I have purchased this flooring, and I was very happy with my first order. This one, however is composed of 28-7' boards, 44-3' boards, and a whopping 88-2' boards. I understand that I get a mix of lengths, but this proportion is disgraceful. I had planned to buy flooring for other rooms from Lumber Liquidators, but I'm now reconsidering.

This product is great! We had the hardest time finding a manufactured wood to match to our 100 year old floor. This unfinished product looks terrific after finising. While there are a few knots in the wood, it adds to the character of our 100 year old home. Would buy again!

I have a home in northeastern Ohio and am looking to replace the front porch with tongue and groove boards. The house is about 90 years old and I want to keep the same look. The floor will be painted and I was wondering if these boards would be the most economical way to go or do you have a better suggestion.

                      1 answer

                      • CUSTOMER CARE

                        A:

We do not carry it but clear fir was traditionally used for covered porches.

It goes without saying that outdoor deck and porch applications of wood flooring, enclosed or screened in, will not have a manufacturer’s warranty. Nevertheless customers and contractors desiring wood flooring on porches may find that our unfinished products like; pines, red and white oak and Brazilian Walnut are ideal choices for this application.

Traditionally the surfaces of porch flooring were protected from the outdoor elements using exterior grade primers and colored paint. However, too much expansion or contraction due to high moisture, heat and cold can damage urethane top-sealers and paints. Therefore, penetrating oil sealers will offer even greater outdoor protection. Unlike urethane top-finishes, penetrating sealers will allow board surface greater “freedom of movement” in relation to humidity changes. Exterior sealers such as THOMPSONS WATERSEAL or WATERLOX tongue oils are good choices for decks and porches.

During the deck floor installation experienced carpenters will add space around walls and fixed objects to allow for normal seasonal expansion. Note that optimum board performance is best achieved when maintaining wood at indoor environmental levels of 30%-50% humidity and temperatures of 60˚-80˚.

                        A:

No. Pine is too soft for tongue and groove to work on ends.

Clover Lea -unfinished Yellow Pine comes in nested bundles, lengths are; 2’, 3’, 4’ 5’ and 7’. They are random lengths so much as you could get all 7’ in one bundle or a combination of nested lengths (there is always at least one 7’ board per bundle).

                        A:

You could probably use it outside if you finish it with an exterior grade penetrating floor finish.
Our flooring products are intended for interior use only.
I would discuss it with an installer in your area since they are more familiar with weather, moisture, etc...
