About Virginia Mill Works:
Reminiscent of the beautiful, handcrafted floors found in Colonial American homes, Virginia Mill Works Distressed hardwood flooring fuses old-world craftsmanship with modern design and prefinishing. Backed by a 30-year warranty, each floor is a work of art, adding textured beauty to any room in your home.

Features:
- 3/8" x 5" prefinished, engineered hardwood
- Distressed hardwood veneer
- Light to medium honey brown, contrasting pattern
- Float, glue, or nail installation
- 30 Year Warranty

Installation Tips:
- Nail-down, glue-down, or edge-glue and float.
- Store flooring flat for 48 hours in its original packaging at room temperature.
- Must be installed over a clean, stable, flat, smooth, and dry surface.
- Moisture barrier is required for installations over concrete.
- For a more natural look, mix planks well when installing.

About Distressed Flooring:
Distressed hardwood floors have a natural worn appearance. They look like floors from the days when floors were finished by hand.

About Engineered:
Hardwood veneer layers are stacked in a laddered construction.  Because wood expands and contracts in the direction of the grain, one layer stabilizes the next, resulting in a product that is less susceptible to the effects of moisture & temperature change.

  • Q:

is there something to apply to it to keep it from scratching? It scratches white
Asked on 2/2/2016 by BuckandMazie from Raleigh

      A:

Unfortunately not, adding additional finish will void your warranty.
Scratches and dents are beyond a the manufacturer's ability to control.
Typically we use touch up pens or markers for minor scuffs and scratches. These are available at all home centers in the paint dept. The best ones to use for minor scuffs look like a magic marker with wood stain used instead of colored ink. For deeper scratches they also carry colored crayons and matching putty, they have a wide assortment and if you take a board or a piece of scrap you should be able to match the colors easily.

      Helpful Tips for installations
 Follow the same basic floor installation principles for the wall and ceiling work. Take note of acclimation, board placement and expansion
 Think safety. When installing ceilings, consider using engineered styles or when using solid wood choose the lighter-weight low profile 5/16"-1/2" thicknesses.
 Most flooring styles containing boards under 16" will need a secure nailing base such as ½" plywood
 Wood flooring styles (like pines) having longer than average lengths can easily be nailed directly to the wall studs or ceiling joists without ½" plywood.
 Gluing and nailing promotes safety and minimizes board "rattle" or vibrations.
 When gluing, choose 100% urethane wood flooring adhesive, apply using a cartridge gun
 Hand nailing or air assisted finish-nailers can be safely used on ladders; fastener gage is usually determined by board thickness.
 Use a JigSaw for special cuts around skylights and receptacles
 Exposed cut edges can be concealed using matching trim.

      A:

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.

  • Q:

    what is the hardness rating?
Asked on 4/26/2015 by JON from south bend

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Engineered Hardwoods and the Janka Scale.
The Janka scale chart is not to be considered an absolute; it is designed to help people understand which woods are harder than others.
The Janka Hardness test is done in accordance with ASTM D 1037-7 testing methods. Lumber stocks tested ranges from 1" to 2" thick. (Resulting Janka Hardness Numbers are an average.) It important to note that no testing is done on flooring (but is done on "solid" wood species).
The Janka hardness test measures the resistance of a type of wood to withstand denting and wear. It measures the force required to embed an 11.28 mm (0.444 in) steel ball into wood to half the ball's diameter. This method leaves an indentation. A common use of Janka hardness ratings is to determine whether a species of wood is suitable for use as flooring.
Other factors that affect how flooring performs: type of core for engineered flooring like: pine, hdf (high density fiber board) , poplar, oak, birch....etc.. When choosing an engineered floor (other than the species) consider grain direction and thickness floor or top wear surface of the product, engineered hardwoods with thicker wear layers (more actual hardwood) will offer more resistance to dinging than ones with much thinner wear layers. The hardness ratings should not be the only deciding factor when selecting any hardwood floor.
      Thank you for your inquiry.
